Chuckles Cover Love #9

If there is one thing that makes a great book even better, it is when it has a cover that we love! The cover design is what catches the eye as we browse through a bookstore shelf or check out the Amazon or Goodreads recommendations. The right cover makes me look closer at a book, to read the blurb and maybe make a purchase. A poor cover might mean I never look at the blurb at all.

This week I'm looking at a popular vampire series that is now splitting opinions over the blogisphere-Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake books. I liked the first six books as Anita raised zombies in her job and battled monsters and I bought in bulk from a charity shop books 7-16. I was excited to read them but as I made my way through them, it became less about Anita killing monsters and more about Anita the porn star. All we got was constant sex and her having the same arguments over and over with the same people in every book. It got boring and frustrating for me so I don't follow the series now.

However, I loved the covers for the book. I'm not usually keen on a cover with a face heavily featured but I liked these. I'm featuring some of my favourite covers from the series as there are too many to do them all!

Had I continued with the series I would have had cover frustration again as the later books don't seem to offer these covers anymore. Oh what a surprise! Here are a few of the alternate covers available. I like the variety in the red set. Had I read on, I wouldn't mind having them if I hadn't already bought 16 with the other covers!

However, I find the designs on these books bland and uninspiring!

Have you read the books? Are you still following the series? Which covers do you have and what do you think of the ones shown?

  1. I read the first 8 in this series and then kind of lost interest for a while. It's not that I don't still want to read them, but to be honest, when the series is this long (aren't they on book 25 or 26), it's kind of hard to pick it back up. Maybe someday! I really am digging those red covers.

    1. As soon as Anita started having a harem of lovers, that was enough for me! She seemed to spend all her time in bed with various men and running around solving Jean Claudes political problems...made me wonder if she still HAD a job! Ugh!

    2. I'm pretty sure I ran up against some of the same problems. I didn't mind some of the romance/relationship stuff, but I felt like I needed to start making diagrams to know who was who when it came to her love life.

    3. Diagrams, flowcharts and more! And having the same fights every book with Ronnie and Richard drove me nuts!

  2. Okay in the first set I like The Lunatic cafe (because green) and Blue moon. But I like moons on covers, especially the paranormals. Of the second set I like Guilty Pleasures although she needs some blood dripping or something lol (I assume she's a vampire?) Kiss the Dead's okay. But yeah I like the first set better.

    1. This series has so many different covers that is blows the mind! Anita is a vampire executioner and zombie raiser in the early books but then just becomes a whore basically!

  3. Yeah, I used to love this series until it got all sexed up. You pretty much nailed it with the first six books, that was where I stopped as well. These books do have the best covers though.

    1. I had to suffer through to book 16 as I'd bought them all up to that point! That was years ago. Had that been now, I'd have stopped around book 10 and just sent them all to the charity shop! I don't have the patience to stick with things I don't enjoy now!
