Top Ten Tuesday-New To Me Authors In 2020

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

This week it's new to me authors that I discovered in 2020. I didn't read a massive amount of fiction or new authors last year and quite a few are ones I'd already tried books by, but I did get a list together.

1) Michael Bond
I read a ton of Paddington books for all age groups last year and I just love that bear! It cheered me up during a rotten year overall. It makes me wish I had read them as a child and I'm not sure why I never did at the time.

2) Jenny Lawson
Jenny's books about her struggles with mental health issues were perfect for when I was struggling to deal with the Covid stuff. I recognised some issues that I was dealing with and it was a really big help.

3) Allie Brosh
I loved the look of her drawings and had this book on my TBR for ages before I got round to reading it. Again, reading about the struggles other went through helped me get a grip on dealing with my own problems.

4) Michael McBride
Two of my favourite things in horror are isolated snowy places and Sasquatches which brought me to a couple of his books which have both! A couple of tense and scary stories that led me to download a pile of his work for future enjoyment.

5) Spencer Quinn
A hapless PI and his canine narrator sidekick was something I wanted to read and I liked this first prequel short story. I have a few in the series on Kindle and I'll probably want to try at least another one in the series.

6) Camille Picott
I read an excellent zombie prequel which features an MC with an endurance running background, and I really enjoyed it. I've already downloaded the first novel in the series and look forward to reading more from this author.

7) Brian Moreland
Another horror author that came onto my radar. I read a prequel story to a full length novel he has written and I'm certainly intrigued by that story and a few others that I grabbed. I hope this will be another horror author to enjoy.

8) Lora Powell
This was another short zombie offering that I found free and it was enjoyable. I certainly plan to go ahead and read the full length novel. You know me, I can never resist the urge to read new zombie stuff!

9) Robert Barnard
This was another zombie book that was lurking on my e-reader for a while. The story kept me interested and I liked a lot of the characters. I certainly wouldn't avoid trying more stuff by the author and maybe a sequel.

10) Caleb Cleek
Another zombie book that lurked unread for a time. I did like the characters and there was plenty action in it. I was curious enough to read the sequel in the future and would try more work by the author in future.

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

Another week goes by and I was out this morning clearing snow again. I wasn't surprised to see it as it was bitterly cold last night. I really didn't want to get up this morning. The snow doesn't seem to bother the squirrels as long as I keep the feeder itself clear of snow and ice. Mind you, at least they have fur for this weather! A busy week around the house as usual but no reading this weekend as I was bit tired. I had hoped to dive into a bit of Westeros history with GRRM but it wasn't to be. I did discover that some books marked as TBR have actually been read so I'll be able to give Tackling The TBR a bit of a numbers boost in the right direction this week. That makes up for it! We've fitted the bin locks which seem to work nicely but it's a bit of a pain that we have to be dealing with crap like that on cold winter days.

Chuckles Blogging World
I've been playing catchup with visits and comments all week as I'm doing a different order to my posts and it's still in the chaos phase at the moment.

Book Reviews
I finally found the journal that has all my reading notes in it so maybe I can get started on the reviews fot the books I read last year! I'm a bit behind...

In a blast from the past I watched St Elmo's Fire. I fondly remember when I first watched this and drooled over Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy! I used to watch the so called Brat Pack films when I was at school! Continued with 1993 episodes of Coronation Street. I really loved Jim McDonald, so I did!

The Week Ahead
I'll be resetting my total on Tackling The TBR after finding some books I've actually read that I hadn't marked as read. Hurrah! I'm hoping to read a couple of short books this week and maybe a bit more of the huge Fire and Blood!

Winter Blues #6

THURSDAY
Earlier this week, the fence guy came round with a few helpers to deliver the wood, cement and posts for the fence. It was meant to come last week but the weather was too poor to get started so he kept hold of it. The plan is to get started on Saturday if the weather holds and the forecast isn't looking bad at the moment, fingers crossed. They also took down the rotted fences and took them away which saves a bit of time but it does leave the gardens wide open to people wandering around. With two broken security lights front and back, I'm a bit concerned about someone nicking the wood some night. I'll feel better when work gets started. At the moment every noise outside at night has me all jumpy!

FRIDAY
Groan, it was Asda delivery day today. The guy turned up earlier than our slot but that's ok as I'm up and about 90 minutes before the morning delivery comes. It only took five minutes to get the stuff into the house but with these new strains of Covid, I'm now washing down every item delivered with 70% alcohol just as an added precaution. My kitchen smells like a brewery and not in a good beer smell kind of way! I know it's probably over cautious but I'd rather be sure. They say you can't catch Covid from deliveries and shopping but in the early days of the virus they said people without underlying health issues weren't really at risk, and that was proved wrong. Better to be safe than sorry I guess.

Darn it, no fence being done tomorrow. The fence guy does home improvements and hasn't finished the job before ours, meaning ours is delayed until next weekend. He's getting irritated because the customer keeps changing his mind about what he wants and it is dragging on a week longer than expected. It's a bummer but what can you do except be patient and wait? It'll get done when it gets done. Scott does know a guy who can fix our security light so maybe we can see action on that soon.

Have a good weekend and may your books be five star reads!

Chuckles Friday Reading Roundup

Welcome to my Friday Reading Roundup! This feature will show exactly what I've been reading and DNFing through the last week.

This week was about two bigger books so I'm pleased to get through them!

5 stars, 4 stars.

Tackling The TBR Jan 15th-21st

In December 2018 I launched Tackling The TBR, a challenge to reduce the ever extending TBR pile and 2019 was pretty successful in that regard. In 2020 I intended to make a big effort to reduce my TBR by buying less, getting stuff read and getting rid of the things that I just don't want to read from my bookshelves and my ereaders Maurice and Myrnin! However the darn Coronavirus Pandemic has put the skids under all my plans and I had to suspend the challenge. I've now decided to bring it back in a bid to kickstart my TBR reduction as nothing else has been working.

The TBR total shown is the total number of books I own but have not read yet-wishlist books are NOT in my TBR! Sometimes there will be a difference between the books read and new total-if I read a book not on the TBR it counts for books read for the week but not for this challenge.

BOOKS IN
-Books in refers to bought, downloaded or gifted books being added to the TBR list.

BOOKS OUT
-Books read refers to books read that were ON the TBR and DNFed is obvious.
-Deleted from the TBR are books I lost interest in reading, or sequels to DNFed books I no longer want to read and have been removed without starting to read them. These three categories added together are my books 'out'.

I'm posting my progress on the 7th, 14th, 21st and final day of the month as before, even if there is no progress to report and anyone else is welcome to join in. No rules, set up your posts how you want and when you want, just reduce the pile! And each week I'll add my new week to the end of the post so I can track how the whole month went.

My 2020 (Lack of) Reading Statistics

I always enjoy doing my pie charts but never got to do it thanks to catching that norovirus over the holiday season. I was in two minds about doing it as my reading year was a bit of a mess with Covid ruining my motivation and concentration but I do enjoy them so I'll do it to show how different my reading was this year.

Pie chart/graph maker link: https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx

As a recap this was how my reading went last year:

Book Type: Fiction 78% Non Fiction 22%

Top genres: 1) Non Fiction 2) Horror 3) Apocalypse

Book Type: Stand Alone 30% Series 70%

Author Gender: Male 61% Female 30% Other 9%

2020 Reading Stats

FICTION & NON FICTION (161)

Cartoons are shown here as a category as some are a mixture of fiction and non fiction.

NON FICTION BREAKDOWN (48)

SERIES & STAND ALONE

GENRE

It's clear that my reading changed totally due to all of the pandemic chaos and worry. I was reading much lighter fiction written for kids and short cartoons, which helped my overall mood. I also read a ton of non fiction as that was easier to concentrate on. I had little interest in reading apocalypse and horror last yearafter the pandemic story really hit in February. I did get off to a good start with reading in January and February but that became sporadic as the year progressed.

Top Ten Tuesday-Books I Meant To Read in 2020

This week it's books I meant to read last year but never got round to. The answer to that is loads of them! I had a lot I wanted to read but Covid Fear led to the worst reading slump I've ever had. These books are going to be priority this year.

1) George RR Martin-Fire and Blood
The sheer size of this monster really put me off picking it up, especially when I struggled to read anything much. But the good news is that I actually DID read chapter one last night and I'm going to get stuck into it now.

2) Hunter Shea-The Jersey Devil
I actually wanted to catch up with a few Hunter Shea books, some of his older works ideally. I've enjoyed most of what he wrote and really wanted to get them read last year as part of a horror themed month.

3) Enid Blyton-The Island Of Adventure
I started the first book of this series and actually got distracted from it after a few chapters, even though I was liking it. I can't actually remember why I got distracted but I hate having half finished books so I need to get it finished.

4) Michael Wolff-Fire and Fury
This was the first Trump related book that I bought and I was so keen to read it but never got round to actually picking it up, which is annoying considering how much non fiction I read! I hope to get to it soon.

5) Philippa Gregory-Wideacre trilogy
I read and LOVED Wideacre and feel I might have underrated it. I had planned to read it again, review it and read the rest of the trilogy last year. Sadly I never got to any of them. Just as a warning, it contains themes of incest.

6) Jon Athan-Do Not Disturb
I have a ton of horror novellas by this author on my Kindle and I kept saying I was going to read a few last year-and never got to a single one. I'm really hoping to get one read this month to maybe start me off on horror again.

7) Alan Baxter-The Roo
I heard mixed things about this one online and from friends but I'd already bought it. It was short so I wanted to make it a priority to look at. I figured I could deal with it in one night one way or the other.

8) Kate Emerson-At The King's Pleasure
For some reason I read book one in this stand alone type series then started book four instead of book two. Again it was a decent read but I stopped reading it after a handful of chapters and can't remember why. Need to get it and the series done!

9) Cameron Roubique-Kill River
I love the cover of this book and the others the author has written. I love that retro eighties slasher feel to the story. And you know I love my horror books! But I struggled to read fiction and just didn't feel like reading anything in this genre.

10) Steve McHugh-Crimes Against Magic
This is a third one that I started last year and never got to finishing and I was liking it. That's the way my year went, starting a book and getting distracted either by the news or a new Paddington book from Amazon! Must get it finished.

Another week bites the dust and it has been busy here. I've been working on my room, just gradually moving little bits and pieces into a better place so it's nearly done now. More stuff to chuck out and shred which is always a laugh (not). I did however manage to read the Mary Trump book. It was well written and shines a light onto her family but to be honest it wasn't what I expected. It was mostly about the bad treatment her dad got from his parents and not as much on Donald as I was expecting. OK read but will go to the charity shop when it finally opens. I'm pleased to get a whole hardback book read as it took a few days to get through.

I've also been focused on getting things done around the house, clearing snow, cleaning up after squirrels and trying to keep calm as my neighbour decides my bin is hers to stuff full. I'm getting bin locks and bloody CCTV if that's what it bloody takes! Anyway, trying to chill out tonight and calm down! Grrr, I hate Saturday bin day!!!

Chuckles Blogging World
I did a bit of a catchup during the week as I fell behind on comments this year. Sorry about that. Hope to get on with blog visits this weekend.

I'm reading a brilliant behind the scenes of Game of Thrones book and I'm three chapters in. I hope to take a couple of days to read this 439 page book and then see where my mood takes me. I also hope to do a few fun posts-maybe the famous pie charts that fell victim to my having norovirus at Christmas, and a couple of book tags. We'll see!
