Autumn Blues #4

Sorry guys, we haven't been around much this last week or so. Dave here, catching you all up on our latest news, or lack of it! The weather has been cold and wet with a few minor storm systems coming into the UK. Makes you want to curl up in front of the fire with some hot chocolate, peanuts, chocolate and a nice Harry Potter book or film!

Mum has been ordering like a demon online before she takes a break from shopping for Christmas. She's been in a Harry Potter mood, buying potion drinks, skeleton water bottles, butterbeer, Harry Potter chocolate AND a few behind the scenes books she didn't know existed. One of the books was so big that you could knock out burglars...if you had the strength to lift the bugger in the first place! We are looking forward to reading them. Mum did read The Philosopher's Stone to me over the last two days as she was just in the mood to read it again. It doesn't alter the TBR total but it meant she wanted to read some fiction which is an improvement!

Mum has also been getting in some treat items for the winter hibernation. There has been a lot of Lindt chocolate drifting by my sensitive nose in cardboard boxes this week. She's hiding them for TV treats. We also have all the food for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year meals-prawns and cocktail sauce, turkey joints with sage and onion stuffing, bread sauce, roast spuds, Mint Vienetta, single cream, Harry Potter butterbeer, cheese and biscuits, Terry's Chocolate Orange, After Eight Mints, various peanuts and other sweet and savoury stuff...YUM! Our winter chocolate collection has been building and looks pretty good overall. I'm already wanting to chomp, and believe me, a salivating pumpkin is not a pretty sight...

We now have confirmed that there are six squirrels feeding in the garden. We have a nice supply of monkey nuts in for them but the rate they are eating makes me worry if we have enough for them. They are cute guys though. They sit and listen when Mum talks to them. She has a couple of hand signals for when it is safe to eat and when they need to take cover and two of them respond straight away to the prompts which is very cute to watch!

We are meant to be in the middle of a vast clearout but Mum can't seem to get motivated to do it yet. It will be hard work and will be great when done but she is tired and grumpy right now so I don't want to push it you know? If we can get the first part done in the next week or so it will motivate her to get rid of that broken bookcase and free up some space for all of us to move without risking decapitation falling over book piles on the floor! But if I nag too much, she might cut off my chocolate supply and THAT would be a disaster!

Look after yourselves, chaps and chapesses!
love Dave

Top Ten Tuesday-Ten Horror Books With Dangerous Trips #4

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

Since it's October, I'll go with a horror theme and ten books I want to read that feature dangerous trips, part 4!

1) WM Mortensen-Slithers
On a remote country road, heading out to a weekend party, Tobe West and his friends pick up two hitchhikers. It seems like the right thing to do. No-one could have predicted the freak car accident that is about to change their lives. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Tobe and the others are faced with a landscape suddenly unfamiliar, in a universe that has come loose from its moorings. Strange things slither in the woods, and spectral lights hover just off the road. A petrol station, shining brightly in a world otherwise dark and frightening, promises safe haven, but Tobe learns the biggest threat lies within the very people he’s trying to protect. As reality breaks down and dangers multiply, Tobe must uncover the hidden agenda of one of the survivors... and keep the others safe from something lurking in the darkness. Something that is hunting them all.

2) CG Mosley-The Island In The Mist
Millionaire Angus Wedgeworth makes a startling discovery on a tiny island in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle! However, there is a slight problem...the island is inhabited by savage dinosaurs. Angus assembles a team to accompany him to the island but keeps the details to himself. After tricking a paleontologist and his girlfriend to join them on the expedition, things begin to spiral wildly out of control. The secret hidden on the The Island In The Mist has kept the prehistoric beasts from extinction. Man will not be able to claim it without a fight!

3) Lee Mountford-Horror In The Woods
Finding that desecrated body was only the beginning....For Ashley and her three friends, it was supposed to be an adventure-filled weekend. A chance to get away from the hustle-and-bustle of city life and experience the peaceful tranquillity of nature. But when they ventured into those woods, their trip turned into a horror far beyond what they could have ever imagined. Because these four friends have wandered into the territory of the violent, grotesque Webb family. A group of psychopaths who have a taste for human meat. And they are hungry! Ashley and her friends must face this evil head on, and, worse, discover the shocking secret behind the family's existence....

4) Ryan Mullaney-The Calm Before The Storm
A cross-country road trip and a week at the beach is just what Samantha needs. To get away and relax with friends, forget everything happened, get her life back on track, and start being happy again. A stop to seek shelter from a passing storm changes everything. With the weather too intense to continue travel, they pull their Jeep up to the only home around in hopes that the farmhouse's owner would let them rest awhile until the tornado warning passes and the winds and rain have settled. But when the owner of the property answers the door with a shotgun aimed to fire and orders them inside, Samantha can only watch, unseen, as her friends are taken inside to meet an unknown fate. As the only hope for her friends getting out alive, Samantha must figure out what to do, and do it soon. The storm is only getting worse.

5) Adam Nevill-The Ritual
Four old university friends reunite for a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle. No longer young men, they have little left in common and tensions rise as they struggle to connect. Frustrated and tired they take a shortcut that turns their hike into a nightmare that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, they stumble across an isolated old house. Inside, they find the macabre remains of old rites and pagan sacrifices; ancient artefacts and unidentifiable bones. A place of dark ritual and home to a bestial presence that is still present in the ancient forest, and now they’re the prey. As the four friends struggle toward salvation they discover that death doesn’t come easy among these ancient trees...

6) Toby J Nichols-Ice Cave
Saxon Smith is on the research trip of a lifetime in Antarctica to explore a remote ice cave system. A previous expedition found hints that the much warmer subsurface caves could support life and Saxon wants to make that discovery and make a name for himself. The small team descends into a cavern hollowed out of the ice by volcanic activity expecting lichen and arthropods and maybe the remains of extinct life, what they find is a lost world of dinosaurs that have adapted to the permanent twilight, cool temperature, and constrained location. The expedition now face a terrifying fight for survival against savage theropods that have learned to herd and trap, and with their ice cave ecosystem starting to fail, they’re ravenous.

7) Christopher Pearson-The Swarm
When Dallas is attacked by a horde of giant mutated insects the only thing on Meg Donner’s mind is returning home. Home is Kansas, home is north on the highway. Home is the last stop on a terrifying journey that will take her through the heart of nature’s First World War.
It's Mankind versus Bugkind, and the collective mind of The Swarm.

8) Trent Pettry-Harvest Deep
Hidden in the West Desert of Utah, the former gold rush settlement of Mammoth is now a ghost town. For Liz Chilton, a photojournalist on assignment, it’s where her deceased mother was raised but barely escaped with her life 40 years ago. Seeking to reconnect with her mother’s past, Liz, her husband and another couple take a road trip to the desolate area, where they learn that over the decades, scores of people have gone missing. The odyssey takes a horrifying turn when they encounter something inhuman consuming a man and his dog—devolving into a terrifying and gripping fight for survival.

9) Duncan Ralston-The Method
Frank and Linda's marriage is falling apart. When old friends tell them about an "unconventional therapy retreat" called The Method, they jump at the chance to attend. Dr. Kaspar's Lone Loon Lodge is a secluded resort deep in the Montana wilds. The staff is friendly. The other couple joining them is intense. But when a death occurs events quickly spiral out of control, leaving Linda and Frank unable to trust anyone but each other.

10) Kyle Alexander Romines-A Sound In The Dark
For Zack Allen, it was supposed to be a chance to get away and relax. A weekend camping trip with a small group of friends seemed like the perfect distraction from a messy personal life, but as Zack and his friends made their way to the camping ground at Drifter’s Folly Memorial Park, he couldn’t shake the feeling something was terribly wrong. Zack should have listened to his gut, because he and his friends aren’t the only ones in the forest. Someone else is watching—someone with dark intentions. And he wants to play a game...

In a world where a deeply hidden community is swathed in mystery, deadly secrets, betrayal and murder, Jaz Barker struggles to fight against the dangerous Beast within her and the emotions and desires it thrusts her way. When tensions ride high and people she cares about are put in danger, she will have to decide how much of her newly awakened animal-side she's willing to let in.

8) Cynthia Hand-My Lady Jane
A comical, fantastical and witty re-imagining of the Tudor world, perfect for fans of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Lady Jane Grey, sixteen, is about to be married to a total stranger - and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that's the least of Jane's problems. She's about to become Queen of England. Like that could go wrong.

9) Christine Johnson-Claire de Lune
It is Claire's 16th birthday and she is excited by the attention of Matthew, but the party breaks up suddenly when a werewolf is sighted nearby. It is then that her mother breaks the news to her that Claire is a werewolf like her mother, and their pack is trying to find the rogue wolf who is attacking people. It gets worse when she realises that Matthew's father is in charge of the werewolf hunt.

10) Stephen King-Cycle Of The Werewolf
When the full moon shines, a paralyzing fear descends on the isolated Maine town of Tarker's Mills. No one knows who will be attacked next, but snarls that sound like human words can be heard and all around are the footprints of a monster whose hunger cannot be sated.

Around The Blogs With Chuckles

We all enjoy snooping and lurking on other people's blogs right? Why not share those entertaining things you found with other readers and bloggers too! Welcome to Around the Blogs with Chuckles, where I take time out to show you some of my favourite blog posts from the previous seven days and link you up so you can check them out.

It is vital that we all stick together online at this time. Do what you can to show some love to other blogs, to books and authors and let us all know that you are staying safe and well. Hearing from our friends will make it easier to deal with whatever is coming in the next few months. Stay safe everyone.

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

It's been another mostly cold and wet week here which is the perfect weather for staying inside in the warmth to do blog posts, a bit of reading and watch some favourite films and quality TV. Winter is usually when I try to get caught up on all my favourite reality TV series like all the Masterchef versions, Bake Off, American Ninja Warrior, Deadliest Catch etc, so I'm getting all that stuff ready to watch.A good TV winter awaits!

I'm reading through a pile of Behind the Scenes books for Coronation Street which is slow but fascinating reading. I reached my Goodreads target of 150 but don't be fooled-there were a lot of kids books in the challenge. Still, it's better than nothing. Reading has been a real issue this year and I'm glad to be doing some even if it is slow going. I'm about to splurge on another Corrie book and a few big volumes of Harry Potter Behind the Scenes stuff too which will do nothing to help my poor TBR! But I WANT them so I don't care! *stamps foot*

I'm also totally finished with my winter prepping supplies so I'm ready in case of a full lockdown over the winter. I generally hibernate over November to January and don't go out anyway so I'm not greatly worried about lockdowns personally. I blame it on my Bear DNA...Oh and I treated myself to a couple of fun Harry Potter gifts, just for fun-a water bottle (above) and a set of sugar free drinks that swirl and glitter like real potions! Chuckles Blogging World
I'm going into this weekend totally caught up on blog comments and I hope to finish my blog visits today for a change! I want to spend tomorrow and Sunday writing out or finishing a few blog posts for the rest of the month, all horror related.

Films & TV & Music
At night I've been watching the Blu-Ray DVD extras for the Harry Potter films. Lots of cool behind the scenes stuff. I've also watched this season of American Ninja Warrior. Pity about the shortened format but at least we did get a competition this year, which is better than it being cancelled, which I was expecting.

The Week Ahead
I have a bit of work to do around the house this week which I'm not greatly looking forward to. I hope to get a bit of TV looked at and some reading.
