Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!
****************
It hasn't been the most productive week in the world. Due to extreme heatwave we've had it is too hot to work in the garden, plus we discovered a big wasp nest and I won't let my dad touch it until we get a professional in to look at it. It's also too hot to do anything in the house except sloth around so no advance on the cleaning and tidying. And with the windows open all day, we got a big hairy spider in the toilet last night. *shudders* I personally can't wait for cooler temperatures and rain! It's too hot to put lights on so my reading time has been limited but I've read two out of the three I targeted this week and I'm halfway through the third, so that's not bad at all. Mostly I've been tracking down old episodes of Ninja Warrior and American Ninja Warrior to enjoy. I love that!

On the book buying side of things it was a bit slower this week. I grabbed a few downloads free or cheap that I'll share with you. I did pick up a couple more in the Matt Wallace Sin Du Jour series which should be fun, plus some nice sounding horror. Russ Watts is an author I've never tried. I have tried and DNFed another book by Tim Waggoner but I'm ready to give him another try!

Chuckles Chuntering...

This is my new feature Chuckles Chuntering, which will be me talking about a mixture of things that make me happy, mad or somewhere in between. I could be talking on any subject from films to sport to news to books and what is going on in my life.

This week, I have to start with the weather. It is predicted to hit 31C today which according to my converting thing means 87.8F. It's horrible!!! Chuckles was not made for weather like this!!! It was really hot in Blackpool but you always had the cooling sea breeze there to make it better. Today it is hot, humid and no breeze coming into the house even with every window fully opened. I'm feeling very grumpy as it has been hot for nearly a week and it is predicted to continue into next week. Having the window open and a bug screen up is fine when it's cooler at night but it does nothing to block out the light or the noise of late night parties and screaming wildlife! Sleep is not in great supply and I hope this weather passes soon...

I have become addicted to watching Sasuke aka Ninja Warrior! I love the original Japanese version of it and the American version. I'm still trying to get the Australian one but it proves elusive at the moment. I'm also liking Kunoichi-Women of Ninja Warrior. I'm watching this in the dark every night this week (stops the room heating up too much). Does anyone else watch this? I love when that Japanese commentator shouts 'Jumping Da Spider!' For some reason he cracks me up! I would love to be able to get reruns of Endurance which I used to see on Clive James every week-it was mad!

Books From The Backlog-Night In The Lonesome October

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf.  You might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. Go to Carole's blog and add your blog post link in to join in the fun! Hosted by Carole at https://carolesrandomlife.blogspot.co.uk/

This seems like a fun feature and I have been planning to take part since Carole launched this so at last, here we go! I have a TON of unread books to choose from in various genres and I'm looking forward to sharing some of them with everybody.

Ed Logan is 20 years old and a sophomore at Willmington University. He's also been dumped by his girlfriend. Lonesome and broken-hearted, he goes for a late-night walk. He doesn't know where he's headed. He doesn't know what he's going to do when he gets there. And he has absolutely no idea of the strange people he is about to meet. Like Casey, the athletic blonde who roams the streets as if she's on a mission. And then there's Randy, who's definitely on a mission - to make Ed's life hell. And then there's the others. Not exactly people. And very definitely not friendly. If Ed's not careful, he's not going to make it home at all...

I bought this way back when it was released and it has been on my Goodreads shelves since 2010. I've held on to two Laymon books for a rainy day but never been able to bring myself to finish with his books. I was gutted by his tragic early death and it will be sad to know I have no more left to read!

Mid Year Freak Out Tag

I've seen this tag around the blogs for a while and didn't have time to do it but after seeing Barb over at http://bookertsfarm.blogspot.com/ had taken part I caved in and did it. I've no idea who started the tag, sorry!

Best Book You've Read So Far in 2018
Sonya Bateman's Master and Apprentice which was book 2 in the series.

Best Sequel You've Read So Far in 2018
Carrie Vaughn's Kitty's House Of Horrors, book 7 in the series.

New Release You Haven't Read Yet But Want To
Quite a few! Cabin At The End Of The World, Devil Sharks and Jurassic Florida.

Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half Of The Year
A couple of Hunter Shea books look quite enticing especially Rattus New Yorkus!

Biggest Disappointment
That's an easy one-A Conservative Coup. It was about how her MPs brought down Margaret Thatcher and sadly it was as exciting as watching paint dry. Actually when I think about it the Carrie Fisher diaries were just as bad.

Biggest Surprise
Titanoboa was much better than I expected it to be, as was Rick Chesler's Luna. The Last Flag was a bit naff but was good mindless entertainment!

Favourite New Author
PA Glaspy. It was a great apocalypse trilogy and I look forward to more of her work.

Newest Fictional Crush
I don't believe in this kind of stuff.

Newest Favourite Character
Rick the vampire in the Kitty Norville books.

Book That Made You Cry
None this year.

Book That Made You Happy
The Haunted Forest Tour was all kinds of monster mayhem with a huge body count!

Favourite Book To Film Adaptation
Haven't watched anything new this year.

Favourite Post You Have Done This Year
I don't have a favourite. I've enjoyed doing my regular posts and discussion posts.

Most Beautiful Book You've Bought This Year
I love the covers for the Extinction Trials books.

What Book Do You Need To Read Before The End Of The Year
I want to finish the Kitty Norville series, read the last Iron Druid book and catch up on the Patricia Briggs series that I'm behind on.

Can't Wait Wednesday-Into The Dark

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at http://www.wishfulendings.com/ to spotlight and discuss books we're excited about but haven't read, which may not even be released yet.

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

It happens in one devastating moment: an EMP strikes. The nation is plunged into darkness. Mass confusion soon becomes mass panic as planes fall out of the sky and cars fly off the roads. Families are stranded. Hospitals are in meltdown. It doesn't take long for the government to collapse and for the looters to take control of the cities.

When the lights go out, Mike is one of the first to realise what is happening. He has spent years studying the impact of EMPs, and how to prepare in case of disaster. His goal? To reunite with his daughter, before making his way out of the city and into the countryside.

Holly is with her friends when the EMP strikes. Cut off from social media and trapped in a busy suburban street, she knows she has to use all the skills her dad has taught her to get out of the city and get into the wilderness. But how much of her dad's teachings can she put into practice in a harsh and terrifying new world?

Do Mike and Holly have what it takes to survive? Or will this dangerous new world defeat them at the first hurdle?

I didn't like the zombie series that I tried by this author but that is no reason not to try a few of his apocalypse series to see if I like them better! Another dog to worry about though...

Released April 2018.

Book Review: When The Pain Is Gone by PA Glaspy (A Powerless World #3)

They thought they were safe, somewhat hidden from the world. They were wrong.

They thought they knew how to protect themselves and each other. They were wrong again.

In the blink of an eye, they lost people, good people, who were trying to help others. When the evil outside the farm finds its way in, how will they react? Will they hide themselves away, or join in the fight for survival and freedom? They’ve paid the ultimate price. How much more will this new way of life cost them?

My Review:
Having posted the first two reviews of this series months ago, I am finally writing my review of the dramatic conclusion to the trilogy.

Things at the farm are at a critical point after recent events. Ryan is withdrawing from the group, consumed by thoughts of revenge and Anne fears that he may do something stupid. Sara and Tony finally realise that guns are their only defence in this new world and they start to embrace the survivalist lifestyle. The homesteaders have to start trying to pick up the pieces and also keep their guard up in case of another attack. Monroe's attitude has already hardened and he decides it is time to protect his own and not help anyone else. When they see the fire nearby at the Dotson house they realise that it could be a trap to draw them out but they do have to take a look anyway.

Clay may have evaded imprisonment for his crimes as he is put to work instead but he is still plotting on how he can steal food for his family, not learning from his mistakes. Barbara decides to open a trading store where people can barter their goods and where she also dresses meat for the town hunters, but runs into trouble from Doug almost immediately. The local vet decides to set up a medical centre, looking after the humans as well as the animals. Angie and Gary distribute the remaining food to the town while Tim realises that he must now start contributing himself. Angie realises that the incident near the farm may have cost the town the chance to strike the deal about working Monroe's land for food, which could doom them all.

After what happened at the farm, Steve and Rich are concerned about Alan's obsession with it  but in the end they are too scared to act against him and continue to follow his plans. Alan is determined to entice the farm occupants out to investigate the fire that he started, but it doesn't quite go to plan. Realising that he lacks the firepower, Alan goes looking for a gang to recruit...

This is the final book in the apocalypse trilogy and I have really enjoyed this series. Anne is a great narrator because she is an ordinary woman who could have been your neighbour. She is not a superhero but she has prepared for possible disaster by gathering knowledge and trying to learn new skills that will help her in the new world. She is someone that you can instantly like. That is true of most of the characters, especially those at the farm, and after what happened in the last book I could see that none of my favourites were safe with Alan plotting more attacks. It was quite a tense book and a fitting end to the series.

I also liked following events around the good people in town who just want their community to work together and survive the disaster. It was interesting to see how they could live without all the convenient gadgets and money, and create a new life. It does talk about the kinds of things communities can do with some effort yet it doesn't come across as preachy which some prepper apocalypse books can do. I like these books when they are informative as well as entertaining and this series gets the balance right. It also shows clearly that there will always be individuals in a community who always want more than everyone else and who will resort to violence to get more than their share.

There is also plenty of action in the book as Alan continues to plot how to take over the farm and all of the resources there. His plotting leads to an encounter with the looters than Anne and her group have had several run ins with already, but can Les be persuaded to let Alan take charge of things, even if the reward was big? Watching all of this happening made me want to find a way to warn the homesteaders or alert the police! The action scenes are well written and the author knows how to keep ramping up the tension as an attack approaches.

The writing is uncomplicated and the story flows nicely. When you add in well written characters that you care about, the day to day life events and those elements of danger, it works out perfectly. I've so much enjoyed discovering this author and I will certainly be reading a lot more of her work as she releases it, bwith my eye on her nuclear blast series next. If you like apocalypse books that have that human edge to them, I recommend this series.

Top Ten Tuesday-Series I Gave Up On

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

1) Kim Harrison-The Hollows
I really loved the first book in the series and the humour at the start of the second. But I got so tired of Ivy tring to bite Rachel, and Rachel continually getting into situations to let this happen that I quit in book three. It's a shame that this repetitive plotline ruined my enjoyment of good characters and overall plot.

2) Devon Monk-Allie Beckstrom
I read and enjoyed the first book, liking the way Allie is drained when using her magic and what it costs her. But I didn't like what I read in the second book at all and DNFed it. I lost interest in reading on in the series.

3) Ada Adams-Angel Creek
I read and loved the first two books in this YA vampire series. However, the second book finished on a huge cliffhanger in 2012 and there is still no sign of book 3 so I've given up on ever getting it now.

4) Jenna Black-Morgan Kingsley
Putting aside that I didn't much care for the bondage stuff that appears in it, I did like the plot and most of the characters. But the MC was such a whiny bitch that I lost patience in her and the sexual interactions in her head when crimes were to be solved.

5) PC Cast-House Of Night
This series got off to a decent start but as the series went on and on, I ended up only liking the so called bad girl. It got repetitive and dragged and the sidekicks became cliched and annoying.

6) DelSheree Gladden-The Destroyer
I loved the first book in the series but the second had morphed from love triangle to bloody square with every guy she meets loving Libby and a ton of boring school angst instead of her destroy the world destiny.

7) Sierra Dean-Secret McQueen
I liked a lot of the characters, the backstory, the MC and the first book had good action in spite of the love triangle issue. However, the second book had too much of the love stuff and I just started to lose interest.

8) James Patterson-Alex Cross
I read and very much enjoyed the first five books then Christine becomes a bitch and I didn't like the bank robbery books that followed. I never got round to reading the rest. Based on reviews they sound pretty like the same 'quit your job' nagging in with a slightly different crime.

9) Jocelynn Drake-Dark Days
I really liked the first book with so much action and a great MC. But the repetitive bickering of the MCs through both books got on my nerves along with book 2 being a bit padded in places and I stopped reading the series.

10) Laurell K Hamilton-Anita Blake
I liked the characters and Anita to start with but as soon as the bloody ardeur turned up it just became have sex, fight with Richard, have sex, fight with Ronnie or Dolph, have sex with someone new, fight with Richard, have sex again. This is the pattern for pretty much every book and I got tired of it.

Chuckles Chat #70 Scenarios We love And Hate About Romance

Welcome to Chuckles Chat where great blogging minds unite to discuss the topics of the day mainly in the book and blogging world. I'll be sharing my thoughts on a topic and then inviting you all to share your thoughts. It's ok to disagree but PLEASE be respectful of each other's views! All of the comments on my blog are moderated and offensive posts ie racist, bigoted will not be published!

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

Over the coming weeks I'm looking at our book buying life. By this what I mean is, what are the scenarios in a book blurb that make us really want to pick up that book and start reading? What do we love about the genre and what puts us off?

This week I'm looking at romance. Anyone who has followed my blog for a period of time will know that I prefer my books not to have romance in them at all or as little as possible.I've got no issue with other readers loving romance and wanting lots of it in their books but it's just not to my personal tastes. I feel that some books end up being DNFed because I find the romance overtaking the story and spoiling it, which is what puts me off reading anything if the blurb so much as hints at possible romance!

Romance scenarios that I hate are ones that I talk about all the time. Love triangles and quads being my utter pet hate. In a YA book I read, the MC had four guys interested in her at the same time and frankly there was no room for any darn story with her dithering over who to choose. Did anyone have that number of high school guys after them in one week? I know I didn't! One every second or third year if I was very lucky! How can you expect there to be a great story if she is spending all her time thinking about these different guys? That really does drive me nuts in a book that was marked as 'paranormal', not 'paranormal romance'.

If I was to pick up a paranormal romance book, then yes, I'd expect the romance element to be dominant in the plot or be the main focus of the actual book. There is nothing wrong with that if it is labelled correctly so that fans of it can easily find what they are looking for. My issue is that those of us who aren't keen on romance are buying books with little or no suggestion of romance in the blurb and then getting pesky love triangles and orgies! Just label the books better so we know what we are buying and that might stop us writing so many low star reviews when we feel cheated!

I'm also not a fan of the dreaded instaluv. I got crushes on guys at school like everyone else but at no point was I thinking they were my soulmates or that we were fated to be together! I just find it so unrealistic. Yes I know it's fiction but I still find it annoying. I'm not a fan of these love hate relationships where they bicker for three quarters of the book and suddenly decide they are in love. I find that constant bickering annoying, frustrating and it can put me off the book even if there is a good story there. This is why I quit reading Jocelynn Drake's Dark Days series. I liked the story but the repetitive nature of the fighting made the MCs seem like bratty kids in a school playground. I dislike sex scenes shoved in for the sake of it especially if they are badly written. I tend to just skip those pages until it gets back to the story.

I don't really like love in the apocalypse. For me if I'm living in a world of zombies or an EMP has destroyed life as we know it, I'll be struggling to find food and water and a safe place to hide, not looking for a boyfriend! I doubt contraception is in great supply during the end of the world and the last thing you need during a time with no medical help and hungry zombies is a screaming baby being born!

Is there any kind of romance that I don't mind? As a matter of fact there are a few types that I can put up with. If the relationship is secure and established before the book starts, it takes the angst element away and the relationship then rarely annoys me. I read a paranormal YA book by DelSheree Gladden where the young couple loved each other but had to stay just friends because of circumstances and it was so well written that my heart broke for them both over the series. This worked because I loved both characters and I was sad about why they were kept apart, so it worked. Elizabeth Briggs, SM Wilson, Suzanne Collins and Simone Pond also brought in a normal attraction not YA instaluv, with light romance to their books without it ruining the story. That will also sometimes work for me.

In adult books, I do prefer minimum romance or the couples to be established before the disaster or event begins so we can concentrate on that rather than relationship. If the progression from friends to couple is gradual without tropes and takes a back seat to the main story, then yes I can deal with that. Horror books with coupled friends at the cabin in the woods,  families during an apocalypse, couples on an Amazon research mission etc are quite common in the books I read and I don't mind that. I don't mind reunited couples during a deadly situation if there is no angst prior to it. It really depends on whether the author makes me love the characters in question and has me accepting that they are or should be a couple.

What romance elements really annoy you? Which will stop you reading a book that sounds good? Which romance elements make you want to pick up a book? What kind of romances do you like and dislike?

Chuckles Cover Love #80 Sara Beth Durst

If there is one thing that makes a great book even better, it is when it has a cover that we love! The cover design is what catches the eye as we browse through a bookstore shelf or check out the Amazon or Goodreads recommendations. The right cover makes me look closer at a book, to read the blurb and maybe make a purchase. A poor cover might mean I never look at the blurb at all.

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

This Week! Sara Beth Durst

I saw this on Mogsy's blog and something about the series kind of appeals to me so I might take a look at it. Love these covers as well! Gorgeous!

Another week passes and I've been busy online as usual. No more cleaning yet as my dad has spent all week watching horseracing from Royal Ascot and the World Cup. It's given me time to plan out and prepare future posts for my blog. This week I've been watching old reruns of Ninja Warrior which has been fun, but no reading of any note. I did start reading the new Extinction Trials book this morning so I'll get stuck into that later today. On the book buying front things have eased off a bit but I still have a few to share. I grabbed a few Final Destination novels-the first two are from a spin off book series which has at least 6 in it, the third book is based on the third film itself. Hope to get more of these!

A friend of my dad bought this for her granddaughter but she wasn't interested in it so it was given to me because they know I like books! Very nice of them, and although I wouldn't have bought it myself, I will read it.
