Tackling The TBR

In 2019 I'm making a big effort to reduce my TBR by buying less, getting stuff read and getting rid of the things that I just don't want to read from my bookshelves and my ereaders Maurice and Myrnin! I'll be doing this regular post to show my progress-what came into the house, what I read and DNFed and what was taken off the TBR.

The TBR total shown is the total number of books I own but have not read yet-wishlist books are NOT in my TBR! Re-reads have already been taken off the TBR when I first read them so don't count in reducing the pile but is just here as a note to help for end of year stats! The re-read total is the running total so far for the year, not what I've read each week.

BOOKS IN
-Books in refers to bought, downloaded or gifted THIS WEEK.
-Books added are books I bought a while back but haven't yet added to my Goodreads TBR so they aren't newly bought, just newly added. Both of these categories together are my 'in' total.

BOOKS OUT
-Books read and DNFed are obvious.
-Deleted from the TBR are books I lost interest in reading, or sequels to DNFed books I no longer want to read and have been removed without starting to read them. These three categories added together are my books 'out'.

Sarah over at https://allthebookblognamesaretaken.blogspot.com/ is also trying to reduce her book pile and we hope to keep each other motivated! I'm posting my progress on the 7th, 14th, 21st and final day of the month and noting what is coming in and out of my house. Anyone else is welcome to join in. No rules, set up your posts how you want and when you want just reduce the pile!

A highly successful month overall! Getting below my target of 1000 well before my December deadline was certainly pleasing and now I have to keep going. At the end of November I stopped buying books until January so that will be a perfect time to try and get the TBR pile down a lot more!

Chuckles Summer Reading List

I've been thinking about putting together a book list for my upcoming summer reading to try and keep me motivated from June until the end of August. The plan is to pick books for challenges I'm doing so I can get ahead in those before we get into autumn and winter, and to pick books from different genres so I don't get fed up with reading and can switch between them as and when I feel like it.

Update! I am delighted to get all of these books looked at during my Summer Reading List Challenge! I didn't actually expect to finish it so this is good for my TBR. Now it is time to start my Autumn Reading List which will be published tomorrow!

Chuckles Friday Reading Roundup

Welcome to my Friday Reading Roundup! This feature will show exactly what I've been reading and DNFing through the week.

READ-all 4 star reads!

DNF-not my thing!

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

Another week of stress and upheaval. My final dentist appointment was cancelled as my crown isn't ready and now my dentist is on holiday! Need to wait a few weeks for it all to be done which is annoying but it's not a disaster. Then there was the big hairy spider that scared the crap out of me yesterday, so I was up all night reading as I couldn't face putting the lights out. The good news is that I'm going to actually get everything on my summer reading list looked at before the end of tomorrow! I'm on the last two, one of which I'll finish tonight and it gives me all day and night tomorrow to finish the longer one. Then I'll be ready to launch my Autumn Reading List which gets a final check today to ensure I'm happy with the books chosen!

I resisted going on a mad buying spree yesterday to calm myself so I'm pleased with the restraint shown for once! I hope I have a more productive week ahead as I need to get my mind back on track. The good thing is that it has been a great bunch of books I've read over the last week or so which always motivates me! I hope you guys are doing well with any summer challenges that are finishing this weekend.

A great reading week! I read the three I'd selected for this week-X Variant and HVLA being very good but quickly DNFing Flicker, and also read Damoren. I've started My Lady of Cleves and Joshua and the Lightning Road and will finish both by bedtime tomorrow! Next up I'm starting a new reading challenge so I have 100 books to pick from and I'm having trouble choosing!!!

Chuckles Chuntering

I swear it is a conspiracy this summer to get me stressed beyond belief. Today was meant to be a catchup for reviews but I won't be getting anything productive done. I was looking out the window at the rain, turned around and saw the biggest spider I have ever seen in real life sitting on the wall. I totally freaked out. Luckily my dad was right there beside me but I ran from the room so he could deal with it. I refused to stay in the house after that so we went out to do some shopping to take my mind off things, which of course didn't work. Now I'm back in but my eyes are everywhere and I'm jumping at bloody shadows.

We are getting way too many of these big horrors in the house this summer and it is really getting me depressed and stressed out. I just can't DEAL with these hairy monsters. If our climate changing is making them bigger and getting more indoors, then I personally want an ice age to come along RIGHT NOW! Where is winter when you need it? Or industrial spider killer all over the garden to stop them coming near our house. Believe me, I'm looking at options so suggestions are welcome.

I just want to go and buy twenty books to cheer myself up, I really do. Or go to my bed for a few days and not get up until my shredded nerves calm down a bit. I'm sort of leaning towards the books but I can't destroy the hard work on the TBR by blowing up my book budget over something like this. I'm signing off for the day to try and find a way to chill out. I hope you guys are all having a better day!

Books From The Backlog-This Dying World

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf.  You might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. Go to Carole's blog and add your blog post link in to join in the fun! Hosted by Carole at https://carolesrandomlife.blogspot.co.uk/

This seems like a fun feature and I have been planning to take part since Carole launched this so at last, here we go! I have a TON of unread books to choose from in various genres and I'm looking forward to sharing some of them with everybody.

It was always a joke. The “what ifs” and the planning were just conversations to have fun with. Who would be the first to go? Where would people be safe? Who would survive the zombie apocalypse? No one is laughing anymore.

Awakening to a nightmare, Dan Foster is forced to flee his suburban Chicago home. Together with his wife Abby and little girl Katie, they begin a dangerous trek across the wintery Midwest in hopes to reconnect with his brother in the heartland of Wisconsin. Dan soon discovers the ravenous hordes of undead are not the only things out there that threaten the lives of his family. Can he stay the man he is, or will he need to become something more dangerous in order to protect the ones he loves?

In the end, how much of Dan’s humanity will survive this dying world?

I always love a good apocalypse tale and when zombies are thrown into the mix, I love it! This one has been lurking on my ereader since October 2015 and it is way past time for me to be reading it. It looks like it will be next year though!

Chuckles Mini Reviews Catchup

I review everything I read, on my blog and on Goodreads. Most reviews are of a decent length but sometimes you don't have much to say about the book because of its length or you DNFed it or various other reasons. In cases like that it makes sense to write a few mini reviews in one post and clear them out your way! So lets catch up with some reviews from July and August!

1) Rebecca Rode-Flicker
GETTING SOLD TO THE EMPIRE WAS NEVER PART OF THE PLAN. Ember lives two very different lives. By day she’s a mysterious Roma future-teller, and by night she struggles to care for her sick father. All she wants is the power to control her own life—no arranged marriage, no more poverty. Her future-reading talent is what will get her there. But when the Empire discovers her gift, Ember’s life changes forever. Ember soon finds her innocent talent is far more dangerous than she believed. The Empire wants to turn her into a deadly weapon. But Ember has plans of her own, and they don’t include living under the Empire’s control. Because even the best weapons can backfire.

Ember is the daughter of an outcast couple in the Roma community on Earth, hated by most people for her bloodline, but feared as a sort of cursed person because she has refused to marry. She earns a living telling fortunes to visiting tourists and looking after her sick father. One day, the village chief sells her to the Empire soldiers as they have heard that her gift is more than just a card reader, and could be useful to their plans.

I don't have a huge amount to say about the book and that isn't because of the book itself or the work of the author. As soon as I started the book I realised that this was not going to be my kind of read. When she tells a man's fortune, she sees that the two of them are going to have a big romance and be fighting alongside each other as soldiers. Straight away, I realised that this was obviously going to be a major plot point which was not mentioned in the blurb. I did know that this was a YA book going into it (I got it free) which is not my favourite kind of SF, but the plot had sounded interesting. However the whole start of the book goes on non stop about the men she turned down, why her friend and father think she should marry one of them, reasons why she won't and then the romance vision. Based on this and reviews I've read, I can see that this will not be my kind of thing.

DNF 2 stars.

2) Anna Pasternak-Princess In Love
This is a love affair too special to be kept a secret. The woman was Diana, Princess of Wales; the man was Captain James Hewitt. Their love was both passionate and full of hope, yet ultimately hopeless. Once the disintegration of the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana had become public knowledge, the world quickly learned of the affair; and not knowing the truth, the world quickly condemned James Hewitt. Now the truth can be known: that his love, support, and encouragement played a vital role in helping Princess Diana through her marriage breakdown and enabling her to develop the inner strength she displayed after her separation from Prince Charles. Theirs was a love that arose through force of circumstance. This book shows why and how they were drawn together to a romance that lasted nearly five years.

Isn't it funny how Charles cheating with Camilla is a terrible sin, an abomination of his wedding vows and truly disgusting to some people, yet Diana's frequent affairs are written about as romantic love stories? Tell that to the wives of the married men whose relationships Diana broke up despite her wails about Camilla wrecking her marriage! But I digress. Charles and Diana should never have married as they had nothing in common. Diana lied to get her Prince by saying she loved country life and sports and told her husband the truth after the wedding. I can understand why she did it but it did get things off to a bad start. She was suffering from bulimia, mental health issues, and stress before the wedding, results of a chaotic upbringing where she got everything she demanded and no behaviour limits were set by her parents going through a messy divorce, and was unable or unwilling to seek help for those issues for many years. By then both were unhappy and seeing other people and it was too late for them.

Hewitt felt no guilt at bedding Diana and actually claims that by bedding her and restoring her self esteem, he was doing his bit for Crown and Country! Oh please! You had an affair because you fancied her and it appealed to your ego mate! He congratulates himself smugly for single handedly curing all Diana's problems which is pure tosh but when word gets out about their affair and Diana calls it off, James suddenly decides that Diana is just a user who didn't love him and has destroyed his life with the affair, threatening his military career, social standing and circle of friends. There was even the self pitying crap about feeling suicidal in the Gulf War because there was no future with Diana-which he knew from the start. The only bits of this book that I felt were true were when he described how demanding Diana could be-sulking when he was too tired for sex, giving him the cold shoulder for two years because he was posted abroad as if it was him abandoning her, and her demands for compliments all the time. I imagine with her medical issues that she could be hard to live with, as books written by royal experts about her and Charles have indicated.

This is a pure whinefest from a man who risked everything for an affair then moaned that it finished the way everyone could have predicted. His pretense to know every thought and feeling Diana ever had seems unlikely and I found this book to be an exercise in self pity, self obsession and cashing in by Hewitt. The writing was nauseating and over the top and it really isn't worth anyone's time!

3) David Lewman-Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom
Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom releases in theaters on June 22, 2018, bringing with it all the wonder, adventure, and thrills of one of the most popular and successful franchises in cinema history. This all-new motion picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs including Blue, the Velociraptor; Tyrannosaurus rex; and Mosasaurus--along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before!

It is such a pity that the Jurassic World novels have only been released in these junior novels and not as full adult novels, which would have been great to read. These short novellas do still tell the basic story which makes them fun one time reads but not going perhaps into the depth of story that the general reader would want. I still very much enjoyed it as a quick read as in my mind I was imagining the actual scenes from the film as I went along. These books are great for kids who love the films and their dinosaurs.

Book Review: Space Sharks by Alan Spencer

Welcome to The Redeemer, a super spaceship that's taking the survivors of the now uninhabitable earth to a new planet to continue humanity. Here, the guests will enjoy fine dining, breath-taking views of space, and flesh-crazy sharks!

A band of religious terrorists have taken over the spaceship and unleashed a deadly collection of sharks on the guests. They plan to end humanity and bring everyone to God. Enter Ram Rogan, a professional football player, who must counter these enemies, save who he can on board, and understand how the shark threat was created and how it can be stopped.

Ram's job won't be easy. These aren't your average sharks on the prowl. Up in space, they've mutated into something hideous and hungry. It'll take blood, guts, and some serious ass-kicking to reach the new planet in one piece. Can Ram save himself and the other survivors, or will the terrorists and sharks end humanity forever?

My Review:
The predictions that the world could end due to the raging fires and pollution killing the planet are about to come true. Globo Corps have been preparing a spacecraft  to transport people of importance and those with money to a new start on another planet. When the company used suction pumps to fill The Redeemer's water tanks from the gulf of Mexico, it also sucked up a variety of live sharks who are now trapped on the ship. Also on the ship are a group of religious extremists who believe that everyone was meant to die on Earth in God's Plan and now they are planning to release the sharks into the ship itself to kill everyone. Only footballer Ram, on the ship by accident, can stop the terrorists and the sharks.

OK the first thing to tell anyone reading this review is that this is very much a b movie creature feature that is not to be taken seriously. I read and enjoyed another book by the author, the amusing and entertaining 'T-Rex' which is about a dinosaur rampage on the island where a porn movie is being filmed. I was certainly interested to see what he did with sharks in space. As long as you go into this expecting it to be cheesy fun rather than a literary masterpiece, you might well get a few hours of daft entertainment to enjoy.

Ram is on the streets with everyone else when the acid rain is falling, and is entrusted with looking after the daughter of a dying General, which gains him a place on The Redeemer by default. By the time the furious men in charge realise the switch, it is too late to turn back, but plans are made to kill Ram when they arrive at their destination. What the people on board don't know is that they were selected based on bloodline and attractiveness as well as how rich they were, so that a new race of people can be bred from the woman. Ram's unwanted ethnic blood is not what is wanted for this master race. However, before Ram can do anything about this, the religious extremists start to kill passengers and then release the sharks.

Ram is well aware who these terrorists are, as he has dealt with them before. His life changed forever during the Superbowl when a leader of the terrorist group went onto the pitch ready to become a suicide bomber. Ram saved countless lives by killing the terrorist, but now his brother is on board with the whole group, and finding out that Ram is there is an extra incentive for them to create mayhem. When they release the sharks into the water system, the sharks are already mutating in the chemical laced tanks and they are infecting some of the humans that they are able to attack. Now with the ship flooding, the only way off the ship are the escape pods but getting to them is a whole other problem.

The one thing that really bugged me in the book was the robot cyborg thing that was activated to lead a group of survivors to the escape pods. I liked the idea in theory but it was programmed to come out with all these stupid and supposedly funny comments as satire instead of just telling everyone what to do. It drove me totally crazy as I found it unfunny, irritating and frankly I wanted to punch the bloody thing to get it to just shut up. The rest of the book was over the top but amusing enough for a quick read. It's not one I'd read again though as there are better books in the genre but it had a few decent shark moments.

Top Ten Tuesday-Books I Want For My Personal Library

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

These are books that I want in paperback or hardback, some have not yet been released and some have not been released in paperback in the UK.

1) RL Naquin-Demons in my Driveway (Monster Haven)
Carina released this series in the US and Canada in mass market paperback but not the UK. I've managed to get the rest of the series in paperback (slowly) but this one eludes me as I'm not willing to pay £50 on Amazon marketplace for it. I've been looking for it for years to complete my set!

2) Kim Renfro-The Unofficial Guide to Game of Thrones
Due to be released at the end of October, this book is 384 pages of themes, storylines, character development, how the show was made and answers to some of the pressing questions. I'm such a fan of the show so I can never get enough of this kind of thing!

3) Judith Post-Wolf's Bane
I've read two of her three brilliant urban fantasy books in this series as ebooks. Sadly as a self published author, she has not released this particular series in paperback which is such a shame as I really want to get proper copies!

4) Anthony Seldon-May at Ten
This book comes out at the start of October but I might need to wait longer for a paperback version. It covers Theresa May's time in office as Prime Minister. I already have similar books in this series covering Gordon Brown and David Cameron in office.

5) Jim Kay-Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (illustrated)
I've loved the first three gorgeous editions and it has been a long wait for this one! It is due to be released in hardback at the start of October and I'll be snapping it up as I have it already pre-ordered!

6) Alison Weir-Anna of Kleve
I really hate having to wait about a year to get the paperback version of a book I want. This is the fourth of six books about Henry VIII's Queens and I need to wait until January 2020 for it to be released!

7) Carrie Vaughn-Kitty Norville
I have read and enjoyed the series but half my collection are pretty paperbacks, and six are horrible mass market versions. I hate mixed size and covers! I'm trying to get books 4, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14 in the larger paperback but it is taking time!

8) George RR Martin-The Winds Of Winter/A Dream Of Spring
Yes I know, I know but I'm so desperate to get my hands TWOW which should cover the events of season 6 of the TV series and then A Dream of Spring. I want to see how he ties the story up and if there are any plot changes. WANT THESE NOW!

9) JK Rowling-Harry Potter prequels
I know they don't exist and probably never will but I want 7 books about James, Snape and everyone at Hogwarts and at least a trilogy about the first war between the Order and Voldemort which ends with the attack on Neville's parents. And a book on the wizard trials!

10) Game of Thrones
There are three big behind the scenes books coming out that I have my eyes on, one about costumes, one about art and one about photography. They are big and each priced over 30 pounds so I might need to wait to get them!
