Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!  http://www.brokeandbookish.com/

This Week the topic is Top Ten Things that will make me instantly want to read a book. Yeah I can manage this one...These are subjects which will attract me to read a book time after time. Strap yourself in people, it's gonna get scary!

1) Zombies
Zombies are without a doubt my favourite ever horror theme. I've scared my pals as a kid pretending to be one, I watch the films, I devour the books! Brraaiinnss! I like fast paced action and gore in my zombies. I don't like zombie love stories, zombies who can talk and use guns, zombie humour, zombie cults. Want zombie recs? Check out my Goodreads zombie shelf!

2) EMP
I love an apocalypse, me! EMPs are one of my favourites because when the power goes out everyone goes back to life before electricity and only the smart have a chance to survive. We see the riots, the looting, the breakdown of society and the struggle to survive. These books are usually tense and I just love them. If you want to see more of these books check out my Goodreads dystopian-sf shelf.

3) Game of Thrones
I'm a new convert to GoT, binge watching all six seasons at the end of last year and now I'm addicted to it. I have the books which I plan to start soon and I'm picking up illustrated versions, colouring books, history of Westeros...I just can't get enough of it! If you've seen all six seasons and want to chat about GoT in a full spoiler zone, why not check out my GoT discussion posts on the blog? Here's the link to the latest one but you'll find the others in the drop down menu under each month, right margin of blog.

4) Apocalypse
As I mentioned, I love a good apocalypse! I like books with EMPs, pandemics, zombies, ebola, economic breakdowns, terrorist attacks, viral outbreaks and I also love this kind of film. I'm an apocalypse geek, what can I say? These books are always tense and scary with bad people roaming around and good people trying to survive. These books are an addiction. You can find my apocalypse books on my dystopian-sf Goodreads shelf.

5) Preppers
I'm not talking about those Doomsday Preppers you see on TV. I'm talking about ordinary people who want to be ready for any disaster-natural or man-made. I love watching the characters getting supplies ready as a disaster looms, travelling to their safe house, fortifying the place and defending it against attack. I also enjoy prepper road trip books. These books can be informative and entertaining and I love reading them! Check out my Goodreads preppers shelf for recs, fiction and non fiction.

6) Monsters
I love monsters! Show me horror or UF books with Bigfoot, rampaging dinosaurs, vampires, werewolves, demons, shifters, mutant spiders, sharks, sea monsters, big bugs, zombies, snowbeasts, mad animals and I'm a happy Chuckles! I like the fast paced gory ones, not keen on slow over descriptive dull ones and I never touch monster porn. Recs available on the dinosaurs-monsters, horror and UF Goodreads shelves.

7) Disasters
When it comes to non fiction I like to read about disasters, but not in a sick ghoulish way. I like reading about escapes, investigations, the human stories and I watch a lot of TV documentaries on the subject. I have books on 9/11, nuclear war, sea and air disasters, football disasters, true crime, holocaust, serial killers, world and civil wars. History fascinates me, as do world events.
My Goodreads shelves have lots of these books.

8) Harsh environments
I've always been fascinated by mountain expedition books especially on Everest and K2. The harsh condotions and extreme danger keep me hooked to these books despite never having done any climbing. I also enjoy fiction out in places like Antarctica where a deadly monster or other danger lurks or in dark jungles with mutant monsters. Check out my mountain disaster Goodread shelves for non fiction recs.

9) Tudors and Plantagenets
If there is one period in time that I love it is this! If it has War of the Roses, Henry and his wives and children, I'm pretty much all over it! I love fiction and non fiction books about this era though my Plantagenets collection is pretty small compared to my Tudor collection. I read tons of Tudor fiction and plan a reread of the Cousins War books soon. Recs can be found on my Goodreads Tudor, Monarchy and True shelves.

10) Kickass UF
UF without tropes and PNR levels of sex are a beautiful thing but harder to find now. PNR is being dressed up and sold as UF which is frustrating. I like kickass heroes and heroines, tons of action, funny sidekicks, Buffy style teamwork, monsters and magic, great plots, talking animals. I hate slow plots, horrible MCs, junkie/rapist heroes, whiny women, love triangles, instaluv. Recs are on my UF-PNR Goodreads shelf.

  1. I can't imagine a zombie love story ha ha. I love apocalypse and post- apoc, and Game of Thrones natch. And monsters! Yes, give me all the snowbeasts please lol.

I guess I agree with just about all of these! Harsh environments (especially Antarctica) and kickass UF *nods*. I don't think I've read much EMP stuff though, I'd like to try a few of those. Preppers too.

    1. You'll be seeing a lot of EMP and prepper related disaster books reviewed through this year! Lots to share! You'll also be overdosed on monsters and other stuff...

  2. You do like your apoc stuff! I like apoc too. I don't usually so much care about the zombies or apocalyptic things themselves though, I just like seeing characters pushed to their limits, groups coming together of people who wouldn't normally associate, that kind of thing.

As per the kickass UF, have you ever looked at Soul Breaker by Clara Coulson? I'm loving the series and there hasn't been any romance so far (he's sleeping with this one woman, but the sex is never on screen).

    1. Who doesn't love a good apocalypse! Part of the fun of the prepper groups is seeing groups gathering their people in place ready for the disaster and coping with aftermaths. I can't get enough of it!

I haven't read the Clara Coulson books as I tend to avoid UF detectives. I hate crime novels and all the interviewing witnesses and that kind of thing and I haven't done well with that kind of UF in the past. Plot sounds decent enough though so who knows, I might read it in the future...

    2. I mean, I totally understand if you don't want to read it, but I wouldn't say it's that much of a detective kinda story. He works for a group that deals with supernatural stuff, and I'm pretty sure there's a lot more fights and supernatural happenings than interviews or typical detective stuff, if I recall correctly. But now you have me doubting my memory and worrying that I might be steering you wrong, haha.

  3. I surprisingly, haven't read many zombie books. I LOVE zombie movies and tv shows but I haven't read too many. I think I need to change that! lol!

I do love books that have monsters of some kind in them tho! They are always a lot of fun

  4. I love your list. I knew there would be zombies, preppers and monsters. I also love kick-ass UF characters. I think it's great that you always manage to find new books to try with all your faves - you definitely have a knack for locating them. You know me pretty well because you were spot on anticipating what would be on my list!

    1. I thought I'd surprise everyone and sneak the zombies in! I wasn't sure with this topic whether to go for the genre side, as I chose to, or go more specific about exact plots I like within the genres. I'm thinking I might do a post about the specific storylines on a later TTT.

    1. I haven't picked up many vampire books recently I must admit. Most of them have been set way in the past or have love tropes that I avoid. I need some decent kickass vampire UF!

  11. I am interested in more than a few of these topics, in the non-fiction variety. And I think you are already familiar with my Plantagenet and Tudor obsessions. Happy Tuesday!
