Game of Thrones Gossip #12 The Night's Watch part 3

Welcome to my Game of Thrones Gossip, where all of us fanatics get the chance to discuss everything we love about this amazing TV series. I did a few spoiler free posts about the series last year but I found that there were other bloggers out there who were also itching to talk more freely about favourite characters and events without spoiling things for those visiting the blog. So I decided to do a whole series of these discussion posts that let us say everything we want and enjoy every second of it! The topics may talk about a death, an event, a character or be season reviews and so on. Please feel free to comment fully and without restriction!

I have to warn you that it is important that you have seen all six seasons before reading any of these posts because these posts and blogger comments will be oozing and exploding spoilers all over the place. If you haven't watched the series and plan to, be warned that it's a bad idea to be here right now! I take no responsibility if you read on and things are spoiled for you nor do I take responsibility for any mistakes on the pages I link you to.

Welcome to part 3 of my Night's Watch posts. I'm continuing to look at the men who defend the Wall and Castle Black from the evil in the north. Lets start with some of Jon's best friends and the good guys of Castle Black.

Pyp may well be one of the few innocent men at the Wall, sent there for stealing after refusing to give sexual favours to a rich man. He locks horns with Jon in the beginning but the intervention of Tyrion sets them on the road to being friends. Pyp is given a position as a steward and is one of the men who persuades Jon not to abandon his position and ride to join Robb's war. He is not part of the Great Ranging and at Castle Black he is there when Jon returns from the wilding camp badly injured. Pyp is called into action during the Battle of Castle Black, but is lacking in the weapons skills he needs, killed by Ygritte and dying in Sam's arms. He wasn't the bravest but he was loyal to Jon and the Night's Watch and his death was somewhat sad, especially being killed by Ygritte.

"We hold the gate!"-Grenn

Grenn joins the Night's Watch at the same time as Jon and gets his nose broken in their first fight for Alliser Thorne. Grenn and Pyp become best friends and he gains vital training from Jon which gains him a coveted ranger position. He returns the favour by helping persuade Jon not to abandon them for Robb's war. Grenn is part of the Great Ranging and survives the attack at the Fist only to watch in horror as his Lord Commander is murdered. He and Edd escape the mutiny at Craster's Keep and raise the alarm back at Castle Black. When Jon announces a mission to return and deal with the men involved in the mutiny, Grenn volunteers to go with him to dispense justice. He is heavily involved in the Battle of Castle Black, working up on the Wall before being sent on a suicide mission by Jon to defend the tunnel from the giant attack. Grenn dies defending his brothers in the Castle, reciting the Night's Watch oath as the giant thunders towards them. It was a very inspiring, poignant and sad moment in the battle for me. Grenn died a true hero, brave to the end.

"The only traitors here are the ones who shoved their knives into their Lord Commander's heart."-Edd

Edd has been a member of the Night's Watch for years when we first meet him on the Great Ranging as he tells the others about Craster and his 'wives' being immune to White Walker attacks. He is not greatly impressed by Sam and when the White Walkers attack, he and Grenn leave him behind as they run for safety. Surviving the battle and escaping the mutiny, Edd and Grenn return to Castle Black to report on the murder of the Lord Commander and volunteer to go back with Jon to deal with the men. When the Battle of Castle Black begins, Edd is up on the Wall and remains in charge of it when Jon assumes command down in the Castle. Edd is unhappy that Jon wants peace with the wildlings but follows him to Hardhome and is part of the battle as everyone flees The White Walkers. Edd is devastated to find Jon's dead body in the courtyard after his murder and as Davos defends Jon's body, Edd rides to Tormund to ask for help. Jon leaves Edd in charge as he leaves Castle Black for Winterfell. I very much liked Edd, career soldier and warrior, totally loyal to the Night's Watch. He is one of the old guard who believe in their duty, and I liked his sarcasm and wit. Safe hands as the acting Lord Commander for sure.

Yoren is the wandering crow, who travels the Seven Kingdoms looking for recruits for the Night's Watch, and is a friend of Benjen Stark and loyal to his family. He travels south towards King's Landing and reports to Ned Stark that his wife has arrested Tyrion after witnessing the events, giving Ned time to come up with a reason for it, taking the blame for his wife. At Ned's execution, he finds Arya in the crowd and smuggles her out as a boy recruit for the Night's Watch, saving her life. A search party from King's Landing is looking for one of King Robert's bastards to execute him on Joffrey's orders but Yoren does everything he can to protect Gendry and Arya from discovery, which will cost him his life. He was another good and honourable man who died saving others. I was sorry to see his death so early in the show.

"We didn't build 500 miles of ice wall 700 feet high to keep out men. The night is gathering Maester Aemon, I've seen it. It's coming for all of us."-Samwell

Samwell is forced to join the Night's Watch by his father who doesn't think he deserves to be his heir and threatened to kill him if he didn't go to the Wall. He is frightened of everything and everyone, totally unskilled in weapons and becomes a target for bullies like Rast and Alliser Thorne. He becomes friends with Jon, who values his intelligence, loyalty and common sense and is assigned a position of steward to Maester Aemon. He is taken on the Great Ranging and serves as steward to the Lord Commander when Jon is away on assignment, but does not cover himself with glory and comes close to being killed by White Walkers. At Craster's Keep, Rast is bullying Sam who, after the Lord Commander is killed, takes Gilly and her child and flees for Castle Black. He shows his bravery by defending them against a White Walker. In the Battle of Castle Black Sam does his duty and fights, and has to comfort the dying Pyp. Sam leads a spirited defence of Jon as the next Lord Commander and looks after Maester Aemon in his dying days. He decides that he wants to train as a Maester and takes Gilly with him, fearful of her continued safety at Castle Black.

Sam is one of my favourite characters. He arrives as the hapless conscript who has no clue how to survive in this environment and only the intervention of Jon saves him. He earns other new friends and provides information on a range of subjects from his beloved books so it is no surprise that he wants to train to be a maester. He discovers his courage defending Gilly from the mutiny, White Walkers and rapists at Castle Black, and his loyalty to Jon is absolute. He overcomes the bullying and gains more confidence in himself, becoming a loving father to little Sam. I'm just sorry that he wasn't still at Castle Black in the aftermath of Jon's murder as those scenes would have been really emotional. Sam is the Samwise to Jon's Frodo, his best friend and loyal defender. I hope that they are reunited again.

What are your thoughts on the men of the Night's Watch? Who did you like? What did you think of the death scenes?

  1. Man, I really don't remember some of these people. I liked Yoren and always appreciated how he looked out for Arya. She is another of my favorite characters. And of course I can never express enough love for Sam. He so stinkin' adorable and reminds me of a lost puppy. Yet he is so much smarter than some of the characters who just want to fight first and don't think ahead.

Sort of off topic but I read an article this week somewhere that said Jon and Sansa might eventually marry and rule the Seven Kingdoms. I don't know what I think about that!

    1. I've seen a lot of spoilers that are meant to happen-some I like (Jon, Dany, Jaime etc uniting against The White Walkers) and some I don't like (Sansa alliance with Littlefinger against Jon) Ugh, no to Jon and Sansa as a couple! I'm not the greatest fan of Sansa...I love Sam. He is exactly like a lost puppy!

    1. I love the Night's Watch! I just love the Wall and the oath (I have a wooden carved oath on my bedroom door!) One of the resons I love Sam is because he is smart and reads books-like Tyrion. Love Jon. I want to see him rule the north like Ned. Yes to bookworms! I've had a lot of fun doing all these GoT posts and there are lots more to come!

  3. I'm glad you did another NW post. I always liked Pyp in the books and I think he's still alive (not sure). Same w/ Grenn. He's awesome and I think Jon sent to Eastwatch in the book, so they're still around (yay) again if my memory serves.

Dolorous Edd is the best! Yoren was good too and it was a shame when he died. And Sam... yeah he's awesome. In the books he's at Oldtown and has not gone to his ancestral home yet or stolen the Valyrian sword, not sure if he will, there's other stuff going on ay Oldtown regarding the maesters and Dany so the books will be differne there I suppose.

    1. I had to do three posts to do the Night's Watch justice. So much to look at! They will feature again as I gradually go through all the events of the whole series. My season one review is still ongoing! Edd and Sam are such great characters...I'm glad they survived the Battle of Castle Black. I'll have a post on each Battle at some point too.
