Book Review: War of the Undead by Peter Meredith (Apocalypse Crusade #1)

At first light that morning, Dr Lee steps into the Walton facility on the initial day of human trials; she can barely contain her excitement. The labs are brand spanking new and everything is sharp and clean. They've been built to her specifications and are, without a doubt, a scientist's dream. Yet even better than the gleaming instruments is the fact that Walton is where cancer is going to be cured once and for all. It’s where Dr. Lee is going to become world famous…only she doesn’t realize what she’s going to be famous for.

By midnight of that first day, Walton is a place of fire, of blood and of death, a death that, like the Apocalypse, is seemingly never ending.

My Review:
This is a cast of obnoxious characters who have been entrusted with curing the world of cancer. With this bunch of hopeless idiots, I'd say the world is doomed. There is no team, trying to end a dreadful disease by working together, no congratulating each other for success. Nope, they gloat over a failure as it gives them the chance to find the cure and be the big hero. Lovely bunch.

Our female MC is a racist, rude, nasty bitch who is smug and superior in nature to all around her. She obviously loves herself and looks down her nose at everyone else. Her comments to the Chinese man working in the lab were disgusting, telling him to sort himself out and get her name right because he can't pronounce 'L'. It's racist and bigoted and I hated her right from the start.

Her male colleagues aren't any better. One is a lazy sod who leaves his Chinese co-worker to do all his work so he can go and chat up women in the building or go home early. And he wonders why his testing is not advancing? It's because you are a useless waste of space. There is the man who is probably going to fire his secretary soon because she hasn't agreed to sleep with him yet. The women are all rated by how attractive they are and each time they enter the room, the men are checking out their bodies. I swear I can't be bothered with the sexist plotlines like this because there is nothing new or interesting about it. It bores me and means I couldn't care less about the characters, which in turn means I don't really care what happens in the plot. Personally I'm hoping the Chinese guy decides to murder then all, even though he is a spy!

So the scene switches to the prison where we have a racist murderer who overdoses on use of the n word and for some cigarettes will kill anyone non white. Lovely. Next up is the spoiled and obnoxious little rich girl with her bitchy nanny/governess or whatever she is meant to be. There could not be a worse set of characters to follow.

That was enough for me. I wanted them all dead and we weren't even NEAR the apocalype. I won't be trying anything else by the author based on this offering.

  1. Oh, have had the worst luck with books lately. This book sounds dreadful. It is never a good sign when you are actually hoping for the characters' death. I hope your next read is a winner!

    1. Zombie books are a bit hit and miss-sometimes you read ten bad ones before you get the really good one!
