Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!  http://www.brokeandbookish.com/

This week TTT is back from hiatus and the topic is Top Ten Recommended. I'm going with Top Ten Recommended Books That Are Films or TV Series.

1) George RR Martin-A Song Of Ice And Fire (Game of Thrones)
The books are beautifully written without being over descriptive, the switching POV between characters moves it along at a fast pace and you get right into characters heads, plus it delves into the history of Westeros and gives more details on thinks like Robb's war and Arya's training. I've read and loved the first two and want to read the rest!

2) JK Rowling-Harry Potter
The world of Harry Potter is so rich and varied! There is much more humour than in the films, great detail of places like Diagon Alley, action, sad scenes, and so much world building like Quidditch! The characters are so diverse and fun to read about plus the dark danger lurking as the books progress. I love the books and they are my comfort read. For adults and kids.

3) Suzanne Collins-The Hunger Games
Katniss is a real heroine, smart, brave and resourceful, and the other characters are all interesting. The Games themselves are brutal and deadly and I loved the tension as the chosen contestants battle each other to survive and win. I've got all the films but I've only seen the first one. I wish they'd bring out a set with better covers though.

4) Michael Crichton-Jurassic Park
Lex was a lot more annoying but I forgive that because there was more dinosaur mayhem, more death and more tension, like the brilliant river rafting scene. Some book scenes ended up in the third film so that gives an idea how jam packed this is. I enjoyed the science and the island. I do love my dinosaurs! Haven't read this book in a decade or more so need to reread.

5) Stephen King-It
I fell in love with this book when I first read it and it's still my favourite! I loved the way the past is mixed with the present, the way the characters change from kid to adult and the many faces of the shapeshifting clown monster as it takes the form of everything you fear. I liked the previous film/mini series and can't wait to see the new film!

6) Keith RA DeCandido-Resident Evil
The book gives a little more depth to the characters and delves into why Matt and his sister are taking on Umbrella. Other than that it is identical to the film and that is why I really enjoyed it. This is one of my favourite horror films and I was pleased that the book was well written. The same author wrote a few sequels based on the films and I'm liking them so far.

7) JRR Tolkien-Lord of the Rings
When Bilbo retires to write his memoirs, Frodo takes ownership of the Ring and flees his home with dark forces in pursuit of it. A dangerous journey to Rivendell finishes but a deadly quest to Mordor begins. I enjoy these books but I love what Peter Jackson did with them on the big screen. I've lost count of how many times I've watched them.

8) Jeffery Deaver-The Bone Collector
Lincoln Rhyme is a quadriplegic forensic expert who uses a young officer as his eyes and ears at a crime scene in a race against time to solve the clue and save the next kidnapped victim. I loved this book, the plot and characters so it is a bit of a puzzle as to why I haven't watched the film yet. I like Angelina and Denzel as actors so it seems strange! Fast paced novel.

9) John Marsden-Tomorrow When The War Began
A group of teenagers return from a camping trip to discover that Australia has been invaded by foreign soldiers. With family and friends held in a prison camp, it is up to the teenagers to fight back. Very much like Red Dawnbut the film was better quality. Loved the book and film but sadly they haven't made any more in the film series which is really annoying!

10) Mario Puzo-The Godfather
The soldier son of a mafia boss who rejected violence and the family way has to become the new Godfather when his father and brother are targeted by rival groups. This is the ultimate novel of backstabbing, betrayal and violence! I don't generally like mafia things but I loved the book and it is also one of my favourite ever films.

  2. I just rewatched "IT" over the weekend. I figured it was due since the new one will be coming out soon. I've think I've seen "Tomorrow When the War Began" some time ago and it was pretty good. "Red Dawn" as one of my Dad's favorite movies so I feel like I've seen it tons of time. I also really like the "Resident Evil" movies and had no idea there were books. Great list!

    1. A lot of people told me the book wasn't any good but I really enjoyed it and I just love the film! The fireworks just brighten things up and the advantage is I don't have to change it each after winter like I would if I was using snowflakes! Thanks for stopping by!
