Game of Thrones Gossip #15 The Dothraki

Welcome to my Game of Thrones Gossip, where all of us fanatics get the chance to discuss everything we love about this amazing TV series. I did a few spoiler free posts about the series last year but I found that there were other bloggers out there who were also itching to talk more freely about favourite characters and events without spoiling things for those visiting the blog. So I decided to do a whole series of these discussion posts that let us say everything we want and enjoy every second of it! The topics may talk about a death, an event, a character or be season reviews and so on. Please feel free to comment fully and without restriction!

I have to warn you that it is important that you have seen all six seasons before reading any of these posts because these posts and blogger comments will be oozing and exploding spoilers all over the place. If you haven't watched the series and plan to, be warned that it's a bad idea to be here right now! I take no responsibility if you read on and things are spoiled for you nor do I take responsibility for any mistakes on the pages I link you to.

As my season one gossip posts draw to an end in the next couple of weeks, it wouldn't be complete without looking at one more group of people. Today I'm looking at the members of the Dothraki that we meet in season one and those connected to the Dothraki story. I've done a previous post on Khal Drogo so I won't be including him in the list.

I have to of course start with Daenerys Targaryen who becomes Khaleesi of the Dothraki when she marries Khal Drogo. When we first see Dany as the wedding is planned, she is a no more than a timid child, frightened of her bullying brother Viserys. He marries Dany to Drogo to get Drogo's army to take him across the sea and win back the Iron Throne taken by Robert Baratheon in his rebellion against The Mad King, father of Dany and Viserys. At the wedding she is presented with three dragons by her long term protector Illyrio Mopatis. Poor Dani doesn't want to marry the fearsome warrior but her brother doesn't care. We see her weeping every time Drogo exercises his rights as her husband and you can't help but feel sorry for her. At some point though, Dany realises that she needs to make the best of it and tries hard to make Drogo happy by learning the language and how to seduce him. This is where things change for her.

Love blossoms between Drogo and Dany and she quickly falls pregnant with a son. Viserys is insane with anger to see how Dany is the one that is having influence over Drogo and not him. His jealous attacks on his sister make him enemies amongst the Dothraki and turns Jorah against him. Even Dany finds herself striking her brother when he hits her after she becomes pregnant, which shows how far her character has come. Drogo loses patience with Viserys when he threatens Dany and their child with a sword, and gives him the crown he deserves by pouring molten gold on his head. Dany shows how far she has come as the season progresses, not flinching at her brothers death and having confidence to give orders to her people. She cannot persuade Drogo to take her to Westeros to win the Iron Throne back. That changes when Robert Baratheon's assassin tries to murder Dany and her unborn baby with poison. The furious Drogo declares that he will take revenge on those who tried to harm his family and give Dany what she craves.

The Dothraki go into full raiding mode to get the means to pay for the coming war which unsettles Dany and her attempts to stop the raping causes trouble between Drogo and his men. It leads to a small injury on Drogo that a local witch is able to use to gain revenge on him. Dany begs the woman to save Drogo with blood magic but it gives the witch the chance to kill Dany's child and leave Drogo catatonic. With her life ruined, Dany takes the tragic step of smothering Drogo to release him from his vegetable state though it breaks her heart. She kills the witch in the funeral pyre, stepping into it and having the dragon eggs there with her. The next morning she steps from the fire with three hatched dragons. And so her conquest begins. There will be more posts about Dany as my gossip posts continue!

Rakharo is Dany's official bodyguard who also shows kindness to her as well as protecting her. He steps in to stop her brother Viserys assaulting her in the high grass and offers to kill him for her, which she will not allow. He is friends with Jorah and they spend time discussing their different methods in battle. When Jorah stops Dany from drinking the poisoned wine, it is Rakharo who ensures that the attempted assassin does not get away and faces Dothraki justice. He is completely loyal to Drogo and Dany, and steps in to stop the raping of the women when Dany orders him to. He refuses to abandon Dany when the other Dothraki start to leave when Drogo is seen to be dying, serving her as a Khaleesi and devoted servant. At the start of season two, Dany sends him out as a scout and is horrified when his horse returns with his severed head. I was gutted to see him die. I was hoping he would become Dany's new husband!

Mago is a Dothraki warrior who objects to Dany giving orders, especially when she intervenes to stop the rape of prisoners. His contempt for Dany leads to a one sided fight during which Drogo brutally kills him. However the small wound that Mago is allowed to inflict will eventually kill Drogo when the witch intervenes.

Qotho is one of Drogo's bloodriders and is always at his side. He is there when Drogo views Dany for the first time and is one of the men who subdues Viserys while Drogo gives him his golden crown. He is loyal to Drogo and attempts to take on Mago to defend the honour of his Khal before Drogo takes the fateful decision to fight Mago himself. Qotho is horrified that Dany lets the witch touch his Khal and tries to stop the blood ritual from taking place. After he pushes Dany and sends her into premature labour he is killed by Jorah. Perhaps they should have listened to the poor man...

Irri is a handmaiden given to Dany after she marries Drogo and starts teaching her the Dothraki language, becoming a friend to her mistress. She interprets between Dany and Rakharo, the man she is in love with and is the one who first realises that Dany is pregnant. By telling Rakharo and Jorah about it to gain better food for Dany, she has no idea that she almost signs Dany's death warrant when Jorah passes the news back to Robert Baratheon. Irri is one of the few who remains loyal and follows her on the journey. Dany has to comfort her when Rakharo is murdered. She herself is murdered during the theft of the dragon eggs in Qarth.

Doreah was a slave in a pleasure house and is then put into Dany's service. She teaches Dany how to seduce Drogo and helps kindle their love affair. Viserys beats Doreah when Dany sends her to invite him to dine with her and in the angry exchange between brother and sister after this, Dany fights back and hits him for the first time, to his shock. Doreah continues to serve Dany after Drogo's death but there is tension between her and Irri by the time they reach Qarth. When Irri is killed and the dragon eggs stolen, Doreah is missing and Dany fears she is dead. However, after getting her dragons back, Dany finds Doreah in bed with Xaro and realises that Doreah betrayed her and was involved in the theft and the death of Irri. Ignoring pleas for mercy, Dany locks both betrayers in Xaro's vault to die together.

Kovarro is one of the remaining Dothraki to swear loyalty to Dany after Drogo's death. He finds the city of Qarth when scouting on her orders and leads everyone there. He is constantly plotting to steal from their rich host Xaro and Dany keeps telling him to stop plotting. He is with Dany when they return to her chambers to find Irri dead and Doreah and the dragons missing. Kovarro is with her when Xaro and Pyat Pree admit to stealing the dragons and tell her where to find them after murdering the rest of the council. After Xaro and Doreah are punished for their crimes, Kovarro finally gets to steal everything of value he can find to buy them a ship. We have not seen the character since then, which is a pity.

Illyrio Mopatis was the man who provided a safe haven for the remaining Targaryens in Pentos after Robert's Rebellion. He looks after Viserys and Dany, and helps to arrange a wedding between Dany and Drogo, gifting her with the three dragon eggs. He is also plotting with Varys to bring about the return of the Targaryen rule, concerned that Ned discovering the truth about Cersei's children might lead him to mess up their plans. Varys assures him that civil war will erupt between the Starks and Lannisters soon and that the Dothraki will need to move faster in getting Dany ready to invade. When Varys escapes with Tyrion from King's Landing after the murder of Tywin Lannister, it is to his friend Mopatis that they go for sanctuary.

  1. The Dothraki are such complicated people. I always liked Irri and I have to admit, I can still visualize the scene where the gold is poured over Viserys' head - downright justice!

    1. I love the episode where Viserys gets his golden crown...very satisfying! I also love Drogo with his going to war in Westeros rant! We lost a few good characters during seasons one and two in this part of the world.

    2. I took great glee in that scene as well.

  2. Dany's arc is pretty epic. Book 5 is awesome because a lot happens with Dany there, and while I don't always agree w/ her decisions it's fascinating to watch her get there! The show last season touched on some of this but there's so much more there, including the Quentyn stuff (Quentyn's a prince of Dorne who goes there to ask for her hand, but the show cut his character for streamlining purposes).

Yeah that was tough with Rakharo. Irri and Jacqui (another handmaiden) are still alive in the books (I think- getting fuzzy here) and they have a fun exchange at one point where they're talking about men and they keep calling each other names (cow and etc). You don't get a lot of humor in Dany's arc lol but that was a funny moment. Doreah's story is WAY different in the books. Kovarro I don't know- must be a show only character?

Mopatis is interesting and we get some insights into him in book five. Interesting to see where his story goes...

    1. I think I might enjoy having characters I like still alive in the books but it'll be a bit weird as well! I'm currently rewatching the dvds to take extensive notes for future posts! I thought we might have seen Mpoatis again with them fleeing to his house. He played a big role in Dany's life and it seems weird he isn't going to Westeros with her. I guess they cut him for time or something. Gah just get this book out already! I think I keep putting off the books until the series is complete but I fear it might never happen!

    2. Oh you need to read the books so we can discuss spoilers! Ha ha I get it though, it's hard when the story isn't complete yet- plus they take so long to get through. Mopatis does show up again and it's interesting, but you know that already from the show. they translated that over pretty good, although there's an additional wrinkle in the books that has also been cut by the show.

    3. My resistance to reading the books is eroding! I expect to be reading them in the next few weeks! I'm obsessing a bit over GoT again with my watching the dvds again bingefest! Just starting season three today...

  3. oh oh oh.. I love this post SO MUCH I can't even! Daenerys, Drogo and the Dothraki are my all-time favs in GoT! [after John Snow of course!]

I could fangirl about them FOREVER!! So ready??? I hope you don't mind super loooooong comments because you got me going here!

How freaking fantastic how Daenerys' arc is??? like you say she makes the best of the situation and you gotta love how like completely transformed herself from the little abused sister to this super powerful Khaleesi!! and Mother of Dragons nonetheless! I loved that she had her own birth rights to a great story way beyond the one she achieved as a Khaleesi. [Can you tell I'm a feminist??] LOVE LOVE LOVE her story ARC SO MUCH I Can't even! I think she did a lot more than

And Drogo was kinda a jerk at first but he was true to his nature which is what I love about GoT characters they are what they are!

And I think I'm secretly in love with Doreah! At least if I were gay I would be! I love her story arc so much too! she may have been just a sex slave BUT She changed the world by teaching Daenerys to be a real Khaleesi. And welll very primitive but that's the way to go when you are a women in a world dominated by men. You start by conquering your King husband [and we all know who most men are conquered LOL!] and then the world :) Bring it on baby!

    1. You can fangirl here all day my dragonfly! Dany is just so amazing from that timid and bullied little girl to being Khaleesi and ordering people around! Loved it! I hope they don't turn her evil though. I love that the GoT characters are so complex...Drogo is the murdering raping pillaging thug but seeing him with Dany turns you all mushy and I cried when he died! Jaime I wanted to kill in season one but I loved him by season four. I'm looking forward to writing so many posts about the continued journey of all the characters! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one!
