Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

It's that time again, it's the weekend roundup. I've spent a fair bit of time thinking how to better organise my online and offline time (see Chuckles Chuntering for details) and I'm giving it a try this weekend to see if I can finally start churning out the book reviews again. What is it about them that I find so hard to write! Anyway, we'll see how it goes. I did manage to finally get some reading done this week and I finished two books which is better than expected considering the tired slump I've been in since October. Early days yet but maybe the worst is behind me-I hope! I've been a bit distracted by political events in the UK and TV in general but I look forward to being back on track next week!

Nothing much stops me from the buying or downloading of books and I have some to share. Over the next couple of days I'll be receiving a gift of more books from that kind booky friend of my neighbour so I can share a few with you today and the rest I hope next week. Their clearout is my gain! I'm also browsing the Black Friday deals which started today but it might be next week before I can share anything with you.

Chuckles Blogging World
It had been a week of upheaval and I'm doing ok with keeping up with comments and blog visits. I haven't had time for anything other than the pre-written regular posts I had ready but I hope that next week I'll have a few more things to share with you including book reviews and a couple of SciFi posts!

I'm hoping I'm back on track with the reading again, having finished The Survivors and Exit Strategy. I think this is probably what I'll be targeting next. I want to try Illuminae and then reread and properly review The Penal Colony. At the moment the plan is to

  1. I hope you like Illuminae! Book reviews are hard to write. I’m currently 10 books behind on writing them. I think I’m unmotivated to write them because hardly anybody reads them.

    1. I'm worried about the format of Illuminae as I don't generally like that kind of thing but I'll give it a try! I'm about 50 reviews behind, for books I read back in June! Plan to get a few written today I hope ready for next week! It's true what you said-I get fewer comments on the reviews. Maybe that does make it harder to write!

  2. I'm sure you'll eventually figure out something that fits in with your life. If it's any consolation, I find reviews hard to write most of the time too. I think sometimes I wait too long. Crimes Against Magic looks pretty good so I'm going to have to check it out.

    1. I take notes when I read which is meant to make life easier to write the reviews but it doesn't seem to help! I just find they take so long to get 'right' and I could be doing other stuff instead!

  3. I actually just got Illuminae from my library last week- I'm hoping to read it this month at some point!

  4. I hope you like the Rob Boffard books, I just read adrift recently. And The Couple Next Door and Numbers Game look intriguing as well.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. My neighbour's pal seemed to like them and they sound more like my kind of Scifi so I'm excited to get them!

  5. Crimes against magic sounds like it could be fun, and The COuple next door definitely sounds like my kind of thriller1 I'll be looking for your reviews to see what you think of them.

    1. The reviews of these will be into next year at least! I have a huge review backlog that I need to get posting first!

  6. I loved the Illuminae series! I hope you like them. You sure have books all over the place in genres. I find mixing them up helps me when I get in a bit of a slump. And I thought I'd be burnt out on writing reviews after doing around 40 in October. But I'm having such fun with my Cozy November feature.

    1. I'm still worried about the format but I do plan to be reading it this week or next weekend if everything goes to plan! Next year I'm going to try and get a better mix of genres read every month and through the year!

  7. I've been in a review-writing slump lately... I love reading books, but writing reviews just feels like a chore. I better try to write some, though, because I have at least 40 books I haven't done reviews for yet.
I loved the Illuminae files series - but I ended up listening to the audios. Very well done, and I hope you'll enjoy them as well.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. I know what you mean about reviews feeling like a chore. I love seeing the finished product on my blog but I hate the process of writing the thing!

  12. Reviews tend to be the hardest post for me to write. I never do them until the last minute and then I end up with a huge backlog. I hope you enjoy your new books and have a great week.

  13. Good luck with reviews! I've been struggling with them lately. I may go to a list format for a little while until I feel like I'm back on pace. Upheaval makes for a challenging week but hopefully this week will be smoother for you!
