The Breakdown of My TBR

As another year draws closer to ending, I'm looking closely at my TBR and what the plan is to tackle it. I've done a post about how I intend to do that but it made me take a close look at the TBR itself as it looks on Goodreads. My TBR is books that I either own a paperback or hardback copy of or have a digital copy already on my ereaders. Everything I want to get remains on my wishlist. Here are my stats:

WHEN BOOKS WERE ADDED TO MY TBR AND HOW MANY THERE ARE

2010-28
2011-52
2012-44
2013-42
2014-34
2015-92
2016-264
2017-204
2018-448

TBR rough total-1208

Firstly I'm shocked at how many books I purchased in some form this year if that is just the unread number. Yes some were free and cheap but the sheer number of them is shocking! This makes the book ban plan a bit more important in reducing these numbers! I'm also quite horrified about the number of unread books that have been on my TBR since back in 2010-2014. That is WAY too many and I need to make some of these books and series a priority next year.

The other thing that worries me is that not all of my books are catalogued on Goodreads yet so I'm thinking that there is maybe another 50 or even more to add to the 2016-2018 numbers. That is a mixture of sequels, new books and those I'm saving up for the weekend posts through the winter where I won't be buying anything so I have something to share with you every week! During the winter I'll get everything uploaded to Goodreads so I can see the true number of books that I have. *trembles*

Now, here's a rough rundown on the genres and how many I have to read in each. Some may have been counted twice in different genres so as I said these are rough numbers. You can see the areas of concern right away!

fantasy-29
SF/dyst-49
horror- 329
apocalypse-314
thrillers-90
political-43
royal-18
NFiction-96
tudors-62
historical-8
UFantasy-173

I expected high totals for horror and apocalypse as I have a ton of horror books on my shelves and a lot of apocalypse series to read. I also have a lot of urban fantasy series to catch up with so yes, I expected those three categories to be way out in front. I'm a bit shocked by the non fiction total which doesn't include my political and tudor NF, so that needs to be tackled quickly. I actually thought I had more tudor books than thrillers but of course that was before I checked the ereaders! Looks like I have plenty to get on with next year. I am planning to keep a careful eye on what I buy and read in a regular post or start adding it to my weekend roundup again. I haven't decided yet.

What is lurking on your tbrs? What genres are you targeting next year?

  1. This is an impressive analysis. So these are all books you own? I stopped adding books I bought to my GR TBR, and now I just don't keep track. I think it was scaring me, so I stopped. Lately, when I am picking my weekly TBR, I will randomly select something from my Amazon cloud or something that fits my theme, but I know keeping track would overwhelm me.

    1. Yep these are the ones I own! I'm scared to think about the true number on it! I have a seperate wishlist for the stuff I want to buy and that is a few hundred as well!

  2. I have a TON of mysteries in my TBR stacks. I'm hoping to get to them all in 2019! :)

  3. I hope to target some urban fantasy. I love it but don't make enough time for it. I am so envious of your organization!

    1. I have a few UF series I definitely need to finish next year! I'm itching to get all my posts ready for January but it is a bit too early yet!

  4. Horror wins! Horror wins for me, too. I'm hoping next year to read a bit more fantasy than I did this year.

    1. I seem to be aquiring more SF now. Fantasy is lagging behind a bit but maybe we'll get a new GRRM book next year!

  5. This was a big book-buying year for you, wasn't it? I don't have the same kind of numbers as you, but I do have books that have been sitting on my shelves for an embarrassing number of years. I'm going to try and tackle those in 2019, as well as the large number of historical fiction books on my TBR list. Good luck tackling your TBR pile! :D

    1. It was too much book buying, that's for sure and it was scary to see the number I bought and haven't read. I don't want to add the number I bought and DID read this year to it! A lot of the UF series date back to 2010 so they will be tackled in the new year for sure!

  6. Omg, my TBR is up to 20,000 or so. So many from giveaways on GR and stuff and ones that I just want to read. It keeps growing and growing! =)

  7. I'm so glad we're in the same boat! I'm at about the same final total. I should have a scout around and see what my totals are for each year... hmmm.

    1. I sort of lost the plot and over-bought this year! I need to put more of a curb on it and go back to sampling and freebies rather than just buying all the books I like the sound of. Hopefully I can make a small dent in the total next month.

  8. I am staggered! Your house must have more books than your local library.
Admittedly I've not counted up the books I've got waiting, but am confident it's under a hundred. This is probably the biggest advantage of lack of space in a travelling life!

    1. I have a better selection than my local library I think! I reckon there are about 800 physical books ubnread plus my permanent keepers collection so yeah, there are a ton!

  9. What a great breakdown of your books. I need to do this so I see mine clearly as a list. I did a bit of clearing out like second books in a series and such. Still a huge list. LOL

    1. I expected high numbers on my favourite three genres but the non fiction total surprised me! I hope to get a varied selection of reading done next year!
