Top Ten Tuesday-Things That Make Me Scream!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

We don't have Thanksgiving in the UK so I need to go my own way this week. I'm going to share ten things that make me want to scream in fury.

1) Amazon continuing to use the useless Hermes and Yodel to deliver their packages.
They are the worse rated delivery companies in the UK. Every year at Black Friday and Christmas, the internet is flooded with multiple complaints about missing, damaged and late packages ordered from shop websites that are given to these idiots to deliver! When are the big companies going to stop entrusting our precious packages to these companies??? I just want my books delivered in good time darn it! The last four times I had packages coming were 3 with Hermes 1 with Yodel. The Yodel one never arrived as did 2 of the Hermes ones and the third was four days late!

2) Phone Calls and Cold Callers
I'm so sick of all these phone calls that we get daily from scammers who want to take control of your computer, sell you crap, steal your bank details, offer you PPI, con you over accidents you never had and sell you smart meters you don't need. We can get up to 5 calls a day from these idiots and I'm sick of it. Most can't even get your name right! Then they appear on your doorstep trying to sell to you or convert you to their religion. We got one guy pretending to be from my energy company putting me onto a cheaper deal (as if!!!) yet couldn't tell me who my company was, how I paid my bills or anything about my account. He was trying to con me into switching to his energy company without saying what he was doing!

3) Checkout operators who stop scanning items to chat.
Is it impossible to multitask or something? I'm standing in the queue with a sore back, wanting to get the shopping finished and go home, but the checkout woman decides to talk to the woman in front of me, pausing with each item in her hand as she makes another comment instead of doing her job and scanning the food. Just put the milk through the scanner while your lips are flapping FFS! We don't have all day to waste!

4) Children running wild.
Whether it is in the supermarket or the GP surgery, I detest badly behaving children running wild while parents play with their phones and offer that irritating 'Damian, stop that!' yet do nothing to make them behave! They run screaming through shops, kick off in restaurants, run into people without apology and the parents do nothing! I was never allowed to behave like that in public! Take your bloody nose out of your phone and MAKE the little gits behave for once!

5) Unreliable workmen/deliverymen.
They don't turn up, they come on the wrong day, they are early or late. Take your pick! How many times have you been asked if you want a morning or afternoon delivery and you get the opposite of what you booked? Have you waited days or weeks for a simple quote for a job? Have you had the 'we're running late, get to you tomorrow' phone call? We've even had the guys turning up to work at our house then asking us if they can borrow a few tools they need for the job!

6) Badgered by Charities.
Adverts on TV demanding that you send money to countless overseas charities that seem to be on in every ad break to make you feel guilty for living. Charities sending unsolicited money demands through the letterbox. Collection tins waved in your face everywhere you go. People with clipboards following you up the street and grabbing your arm, asking if you care about dying children when you are just trying to get home from work. (World Vision are good at this) People trying to get money from you as you go in and out supermarkets. Hate it!

7) Books that let you down.
Don't you just bloody hate it when you buy a book that sounds like your genre and your kind of story, only to find tropes you hate in it that weren't even hinted at in the blurb like love triangles and relationship angst? Or you find your action packed urban fantasy is really a sex filled paranormal porn offering? Maybe you get the worst characters ever that you want to slap? The book is so slow that it sends you to sleep? Over political or ranty? Or at the end of the book you are left wondering why it would be left like that or you feel cheated by some cop out? I hate disappointing books that promised so much and failed to deliver!

8) New Year.
What exactly are we celebrating? The change of one day to another which happens hundreds of times through the year? I hate how these cheerful people every December say it was a terrible year but next year will be better when it generally won't be any different! Gah, I'll stay glass half empty thank you! *grins* It's just an excuse for drunken yobs to set off more fireworks that stop me getting to sleep and an excuse for that perfumed female relative you never see the rest of the year to give you a slimy wet kiss on your cheek and complain about her ailments! Ugh! I go to my bed at ten and hope to be asleep long before midnight!

9) Bonfire Night.
Now this is the biggest waste of time ever. We are celebrating that a group of terrorists decided to blow up Parliament and authorities stopped them. Big Wow. The police and intelligence services do this countless times a year but we don't feel the need to have parties every time! It's an excuse for yobs to set things on fire to annoy the Fire Brigade, set off countless fireworks for a week which scares beloved pets and scare people whose homes get fireworks thrown at it. A total waste of time and it should be stopped. Fireworks would be banned if I ran the country!

10) Watching the news.
There is too much on the news that makes me lose my temper these days. Remainers and Brexiteers constantly fighting, one side trying to stop Brexit and the other trying to bring down their own government at the worst possible time. Donald Rent-A-Gob Trump's latest rants and stupidities. Ad breaks in the news that go on about PPI and how to save for your death. Then you see the murder, terrorism, death, hate etc and it just makes you want to switch off.

  1. I'm with you on #3. Work and talk, but don't stop to talk. There are OTHER customers in the line as well!

  2. Haha, I love that this post is basically the anti-Thanksgiving post. I hate random phone calls! I got a new phone number last January, and the person who had it before me must have worked for a VA hospital. Every single time it snows (which is often) the VA robot calls me and tells me that the hospital is operating on normal hours, and I need to come to work. I’ve called the robot back several times and pushed all the buttons to remove myself from its call list. It hasn’t worked. I still get a call every time it snows.

    1. I figured different would be fun! OK that robot call thing would really drive me mad! Surely the hospital were told not to call that number! That'd be really annoying.

  3. I don't live in the UK, but I just received a package that was completely dented on one side. At least it was only clothes in the box, but still.

My job requires me to use my phone a lot, so I get so many spam or scam calls. I got 3 in the last week. One for a "free trip to Disney world", another for a "hit and run" and a third one for being "diabetic".

I don't get much charity badgering, but someone I work with has a kid that is doing a fundraiser. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The dude asks if I would like to buy a magazine for his kid's fundraiser. The magazine is like 30 bucks. I don't even like reading magazines...

    1. I'd never want to pay that much for a magazine even if it was for charity. I never buy magazines either-too many books to deal with! I hate these stupid cold calling things in all their forms. It should be totally banned! It seems companies don't care these days. You get books with creased covers due to employees just shoving them in boxes without care and delivery people chucking them around without a thought!

  4. I so agree about the news! I'm thinking making a goal next year to find a way to manage my anxiety so I can watch the news again!

    1. I'm thinking about declaring my house as an independent tax avoiding country so no rules apply to me except my own and I'd never need to watch the news again!

  5. Breathe, breathe, breathe!
Though I'm absolutely with you on 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. I'd also add people who leave dogs alone to bark themselves hoarse all day every day. If they don't have time for a pet like a dog, they shouldn't be able to keep one. Maybe something like goldfish instead?

    1. Barking dogs yes. I had a friend in England whose dog did that all day when she was working. She never trained it and then wondered why the neighbours got fed up and reported her! Aneighbour of ours is in all day and the dog barks even if someone just walks by the house. It's really annoying!

  6. I'm tired of scam calls, political calls, please-give-me-money calls, etc. It makes me want to throw my phone away. ;D

    1. If we don't recognise the number, we ignore it. On a bad day we can get 5 or 6 scam calls despite being ex-directory.

  7. I am so with you there on #5. Everyone in the entire world has heard me complain about my bus driver.

    1. And why do people stand for ages in the rain waiting for a bus, then only start fumbling for money or travel card when they are facing the driver, holding up the whole queue!

  8. Cold callers. GOD. Especially when you're expecting an important call and it's a cold caller. COLD CALLER. UGH.

    1. I hate them! They phone at 7am, 11pm and every time in between! We got the one claiming to be from microsoft about a virus on the computer and I said we don't have a computer. He ignored me and carried on with his speech so I said I don't have a phone. That stopped him in his tracks! I kept insisting I didn't have a phone in my house and he had no idea what to say and hung up!

  9. BEST.LIST.EVER. I'm so with you Chuckles! Get your kids under control, stop ringing my phone off the hook and if you want to socialize, go to a bar - don't do it at work. I also have a BIG issue with people in stores stopping to chat and clogging up aisles. They are so STUPID! Sounds like Booker T would definitely hate Bonfire Night. Sounds like too much noise and disruption for him!

    1. Oh yes, having a chat in the supermarket aisles will probably make a second list which I'm already working on! Booker T really would hate it Barb. The fireworks can be going off at night for a week or more before Bonfire Night and for days afterwards. I hate it so I can only imagine the misery for pets and pet owners.

  10. Yodel! They left a big package of bunny food just... sat on our step in the rain. Not two meters from a tool store/shed that would have kept it dry. Gaaaah!

    1. I'm always seeing online complaints about Yodel just throwing packages across the garden as the drivers are too lazy to come to the door. We had one but an Amazon package into a soaking wet flowerbed in a rain storm and the book and packaging were soggy when we came home hours later. I wasn't impressed! I bet your bunnies weren't happy either!
