It’s been a year since the torturous notes from A stopped and the mystery of Alison DiLaurentis’s disappearance was finally put to rest. Now seniors in high school, Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily are older, but they’re not any wiser. The pretty little liars have more secrets than ever - twisted secrets that could destroy the perfect lives they’ve worked so hard to rebuild.
Aria’s jealous of her boyfriend’s new exchange student. Spencer’s getting a little too cozy with her soon-to-be-stepbrother. Hanna’s one scandalous photo away from ruining her dad’s Senate campaign. And Emily will do anything to get a swim scholarship.
Worst of all: Last spring break in Jamaica, they did something unforgivable. The girls are desperate to forget that fateful night, but they should know better than anyone that all secrets wash ashore... eventually.
I was a bit curious about where the series was going to go and I got the book from a friend who didn't like it so I figured I'd give it a shot. No, just NO. This was NOT what I wanted to read. This is bad!
The girls have a new and very bad secret to hide from a recent holiday that they had together. Yes, they met a girl there who was a bit obsessed with them so they suddenly (wrongly)think it must be Alison back from the dead...and Aria kills her. Yes, a murder this time. Oh jeez give me strength. Aria kills someone and the others cover for her and of COURSE someone sees them and starts sending 'A' messages. We've done all this already! Why are going over the whole thing again??? And why are we having the girls we liked in previous books becoming involved in murdering innocent people because they are a bit jumpy? The Alison thing would've been all over the news and the fact that this girl was a little strange made me instantly suspect that she was from one of the institutions Alison/Courtney was in. But lets murder her just in case she might be Alison! Crazy stuff.
The one thing I never got in Pretty Little Liars is that the big secret, The Jenna Thing, was Alison doing something that turned bad, and all the girls being threatened over something they were not involved in. And here we have the same thing again. The same plot with a couple of new characters thrown in just to add some new suspects for 'A'. I don't like a blatant re-hash of old events with nothing new. For me it is lazy writing and just cashing in. And the girls are behaving worse than ever and getting to the annoying stage.
Lets look at how dumb our liars are this time. They don't want to be friends anymore because of the horrible secret. Aria, having MURDERED someone, gets a taste for it and pushes the Finnish ski bunny whore who is trying to steal her boyfriend, off a moving chair lift. Say WHAT? What the hell is Aria turning into??? This remember is Aria, serial cheat in her own right, going all Fatal Attraction because another girl fancies Noel. So lets try to kill her too! Hell, after Tabitha, what are another couple of bodies, eh?
Emily has had a baby. Yes you did read this right. Somehow she has managed to have sex with Isaac, have the pregnancy, give birth, all without her friends knowing. Uh huh. And how exactly does this fit into the time line from the end of the last book? Do the dates even match up? While she covers this up, her friend's dad is trying to have sex with her which Chloe is a little upset about! Emily is upset because she fancies Chloe, not her dad. Oh Emily. Not a great track record with love huh! Mad Courtney, Mad Alison, Nasty Ben, Bitchy Maya, Isaac with the mad mother, Chloe with the pervy dad. Dear Dear.
Hanna. This girl is the dumbest bitch on the planet. Still vying with Kate for her useless father's attention as he runs for office, she gets the limelight in his campaign and ooh he finally loves her (usefulness) again. Oh lovely. But Hanna decides to do a dodgy photo shoot for a fake photographer and gets blackmailed instead. This could ruin her dad's career which has Hanna in a panic. What is wrong with this girl?
And lastly Spencer. She may have found out that she is a member of her family after all but she decides to do something dumb and rip her family apart again. Her mum is engaged to a new man (that was quick) and Spencer has the hots for her new step brother who thinks he is gay. At least he isn't dating Melissa, who is now seeing Wilden the cop. When Spencer is caught lying with Zach on a bed, his dad erupts. Now instead of Spencer acting all innocent and annoyed and saying they are family and were just lying down to have a rest, Spencer tells him that Zach is actually gay, causing Zach to be sent off to military school to knock that out of him. Yes you have to hand it to Spencer! You wouldn't want her at any family gathering would you!
In the last arc I was able to smile and accept the evil twin soap drama plot as I feel it did kind of work. But the girls are being turned into cartoon characters doing dumb crap with another 'A' standing in the shadows going 'mwooaahh!' and wrapping a cape around themselves like a pantomime bad guy. It just all feels wrong and I don't think I can buy into it all for another eight book arc or whatever it is.
