Chuckles Corrie Mania #5

Welcome to Chuckles Corrie Mania! I watched Coronation Street all through the late 70's, 80's and early 90's but lost touch with it by 1999 due to work. So discovering that kind Corrie viewers have uploaded a ton of classic episodes on YouTube was great! I've spent two years gathering as many as I can, ready to get watching, and as I work my way through them, I'll be reviewing what I watch and sharing my thoughts. Would love to hear the thoughts on these episodes from other fans.

Thank you to Auntie Corrie(1976-1994), Mr Magister(1961,1995-2000), Classicsoap(2001+), CLKfanvideos(2006,2010,2011), corriestuff(various), OZZY45100(1960's, 1970's), FullEps(2009), XCorrieClassicsX(2006-2009), albiondean(2012-present), Sevin Alsoylar(2006,2011), Soap Fan 2013(various), JonathanOpenshaw(various) and everyone else who has supplied episodes online.

Episodes 13-16 1961 were screened on Granada Plus and are available on YouTube. I am reviewing those episodes here.

Episode 13-January 20th 1961
Frank and Ken have words when he reminds Ida that it is not their job to look after Albert. Esther offers to lend Christine some money. Florrie (right) gets on Ena's bad side by slagging off Martha, unaware that the women have made up. Ena responds by taunting Florrie about fancying Harry when he is obviously more interested in Concepta. The Factory girls flirt with Joe who admits to Christine that he paid her mother's bill because he likes her and wants to take her to a concert.

I'm not a great fan of Florrie's manner of trying to suck up to people like Ena by bitching about others and she is quite snotty about Harry having a date with a mere barmaid. I was pleased to see Ena take her down a few pegs! Look out for Prunella Scales as the co-worker who fancies Harry.

Episode 14-January 25th 1961
Eileen Hughes asks for Harry's address and Florrie won't give it to her out of jealousy so Ena smugly steps in to provide it. Harry is not pleased to see Eileen on his doorstep and reluctantly invites her in-then can't get rid of her. Christine's uncle comes to visit and gives her money, ruining her date with Joe by chasing him away when he calls for her. Doreen sees Joe in the pub and tries to chat him up but he isn't interested and goes back to see Christine. Harry finally gets to his darts match with old friend Len Fairclough (left)

This was the first appearance of Len Fairclough and he hasn't changed much in the Corrie years! Ooh Florrie needs a good slap for her attitude...I loved Ena grinning at her as she faced off with young Eileen. Poor Harry, surrounded by hot blooded mad women!

Episode 15-January 27th 1961
Linda and Ivan come back to visit and Elsie can't get any of them to stay in for the TV repair man so she leaves a key for him at Florrie's shop. When Elsie gets home, the house has been burgled by someone pretending to be the TV man. Annie and Jack are thrilled to have Billy home from National Service. Emily Nugent (right) finds that Ena won't help her to prepare the Mission for an upcoming event. A gas explosion nearby has everyone on the street being evacuated and Ena is fuming that they are all being sent to the Mission.

How young Emily looks in her first appearance! She is so quiet and timid that mice would bully her, never mind Ena! We only get a brief glance at Billy Walker in this episode but he features more later.

Episode 16-February 1st 1961
Ena is having tantrums as everyone moves into the hall and she lays down the law to them. Annie (left) is irritated that Jack brings his bowling bag, declaring he would pick it over her if he could. Leonard decides to try and persuade the evacuated residents to come to the Mission more often. Ena is complaining about noise causing Elsie to give her a mouthful and Jack threatens that if they aren't welcome in Ena's home, she might not be welcome in his pub. Annie is touched that Jack has her love letters in his bag.

I loved it when Jack got one over on Ena-he is such a great character. The state that Ena gets into over the unwanted guests was pretty funny-she wasn't showing much community spirit there!
