Spotlight: Breakwater Harbor Books

Breakwater Harbor Books
Breakwater Harbor Books is an Independent Author Imprint that is dedicated to its members and to the production of high quality works.

The Breakwater Blog is run by our authors. Here you will find insights into the inner workings of our authors' minds and information on upcoming releases.

Who are the Breakwater Harbor Authors?

Scott J. Toney, founder of Breakwater Harbor Books, lives in Virginia with his wife and children. His first book, The Ark of Humanity, is a what-if mer novel based on the story of Noah and the flood. His most recent work is the Romantic Suspense novel, Hearts of Avon. He has also written a book titled Lazarus, Man, a fictional tale through the eyes of Lazarus of Bethany after rising from the grave. Scott holds degrees in Journalism and Public Relations and marks his greatest achievement as his family.

Cara Goldthorpe, founder of Breakwater Harbor Books, is a novelist and poet. Her current project is a literary fiction/fantasy series telling the tale of a war between two races. It is a story about people, emotion and survival, infused with hope and optimism. Personal struggle is portrayed equally alongside the struggles of empires, to highlight the individual’s importance and role in the universe.

The main themes in Cara’s writing concern finding ‘balance’ through an understanding of multiple perspectives, and peace by living harmoniously with Nature. Drawing inspiration from real-world history, science, and religion, her work subtly provokes reflection on society and human nature.

Mike Lee lives and works in Denver, Colorado, as a psychotherapist. He started writing letters to the editor in local newspapers shortly after graduate school, and was pleasantly surprised when they occasionally were run as guest columns. Later, he was solicited to write articles on psychology for a woman's magazine in Bulgaria. He began writing fiction in 2010, and found he enjoyed it. Now he writes fiction whenever his private psychology practice affords him the time. He can be reached at, and is always happy to hear from readers. The dog in the photo is his good friend and constant companion, Dotty.

An urban fantasy writer, an avid beta-reader, proofreader and editor who enjoys reading fantasy, crime and thriller books.

I love active protagonists who get into a lot of trouble on their way to the truth, and never give up whatever happens to them.

I love watching action movies like The Matrix, Harry Potters and have a soft spot for sitcoms like Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

"The Beholder" is my debut paranormal fantasy novel. This is what Joe Kovacs, #1 Amazon Bestselling Author of "Ginger the Gangster Cat", said about it: 'THE BEHOLDER is a tight and fast-paced thriller combining the crawling claustrophobia of Stephen King's "It" and the exciting arcane symbol-hunting of Dan Brown's "Celestine Prophecy"'

Melissa Simonson has been writing on and off since she was in highschool, but didn’t start taking it seriously until about four years ago. She’s a caffeine addict, a terrible driver, and has weird fascinations with rosary beads, complicated cocktails, and basically anything considered dark or creepy.

Since she saw him in her favorite movie Snatch, Melissa has wanted to marry Jason Statham.

When she’s not writing, she can be found watching endless hours of Dexter or rolling her eyes at her mother.

I know next to nothing on every subject imaginable. Go ask my mother, she'll tell you. Undoubtedly the most notable thing about me is that I desperately hope the Loch Ness Monster is real. I sometimes write books, too.

I am a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick New Jersey. I was born and raised in New Jersey so I am very much a city slicker. I moved to Florida to marry my sweetheart after college and marveled at how little there was to do and how much one had to drive to do it! But due to a job change and an abrupt move, we settled in Austin Texas where the mottos is 'Keep Austin Weird' and I try my best to uphold it!
I am the mother of 2 great kids and though writing has always been a pursuit I was interested in, being a Mommy got in the way for quite a few years. I decided I would give it a fair shake in 2009 and I haven't been able to quit since. I have 4 completed novels and I have 4 additional started novels plus 2 sequels all in various stages of gestation. I have a hard time stopping my ideas and when a seemingly great idea hits me - typically just as I am attempting to fall asleep - I am compelled to start an outline.
My 2 great talents are:
1. My remarkable ablilty to remember names - which has served me well.
2. My ability to remember lyrics from every song I ever heard in the 70's and 80's - which has not helped me in the slightest.
I have a quirky sense of humor and sometimes TV commercials crack me up.
I like the notion of things being 'meant to be' or somehow touched by the unexplainable. I also like the effect music has on one's state of mind and the memories a song can recall.

Claire C Riley, is a mother first, a wife second, but a writer at heart.

Claire likes to break boundaries with her writing, incorporating an old school style of horror and romance. Sexy and dark. (Think Bram Stokers Dracula, but for the 21st century!)

Claire is a mother to three amazing little girls who hold her heart. She hopes to make them proud, and show them that if you work hard and believe in yourself... then, as Cinderella once said... dreams really do come true.

She is an avid book collector and has a great zombie apocalypse plan in place thanks to a questionnaire she asked her readers to fill in for on her blog!

Claire is currently working on the sequel to Limerence and also a dystopian post-apocalyptic zombie novel called- Odium. She actively encourages reader participation on her blog and author Facebook page, with questionnaires, quizzes, and fan art. So get in touch!
Dee Harrison was born in Nottingham, England and brought up on the tales of Robin Hood and nearby Sherwood Forest. From this grew an abiding love for myths and legends. Dee studied medieval history at
Nottingham University and decided to create her own myths. Thus the Firelord's Legacy was born.

Dee is currently working on a new series featuring Junah Venmark, Master Mirrorsmith and has written a special short story for Fusion, an anthology of fantasy and crime tales released by Breakwater Harbor books in August 2013.

Ken Mooney was born in Dublin in the middle of the 1980s; he still lives there. He holds a degree in English Studies from TCD, which he totally uses every day during his day-job in TV advertising...totally.

He's always been obsessed with stories, reading, writing and playing them; that explains the massive collection of books, comics, video games and discarded Word documents. His writing is a combination of all the things that he's passionate about, all the way through high-and-low-brow.

Godhead is his first novel, an idea that's been floating around his head for nearly fifteen years; there might even be a (few) sequel(s) if he ever gets around to writing them...

Stibbe was born in England, UK and grew up in the rural town of Bradfield. Her father, P.G. Stibbe author of Return Via Rangoon was a master of English literature at Bradfield College and regularly read the classics to his children during the school holidays. Stibbe, who loved books and studied classical dance, passed an audition into Elmhurst Ballet School although it was laterly decided a well rounded education was more beneficial. She graduated and went on to study administration at Oxford. She became a Citizen of the United States in 2008 and is now a full time author, wife and mother. Her first novel Chasing Pharaohs is the product of relentless research and a passion to bring authentic characters into a vivid and fascinating time of Egyptian history.
