Chuckles Goes Sampling

Seeing Kermit surrounded and almost buried in leaves kind of reminds me of my relationship with books. I'm pretty much buried in them too! I have no more space in my house for the books I buy and piles are sitting on the floor which isn't good and I can't read them quick enough because I keep buying!!! I've battled to reduce the tbr without success this year but now Kermit and I are embarking on a new plan to reduce the book buying and give me a chance to reduce the tbr at last. The Plan? Download samples and read them and only go on to buy those I liked instead of grabbing everything!

Finally I got some time to look at a few!!!

1) Steve Metcalf-The Beast of Trash Island
The USS Pendragon answers the distress call of a yacht and they cannot find anyone on board, just signs of a struggle, gunfire and a blood covered sphere. It is when they look at filmed footage on a mobile phone that they see the sphere is very much involved in what happened. The prologue ends with the Commander yelling a warning to his crew. We then go to the back story of the people who were on the yacht which was full of students wanting to explore the legendary Trash Island-film makers, environmental science and grad students, all keen to make a name for themselves. The sample ends as they plan the journey.

Ok I find myself intrigued by Trash Island and what has happened to the students. I do hate it when there is prologue that is ahead of time like this, spoiling the upcoming events before you even read the back story of those missing. I still might read this if the reviews of the book sound interesting and it isn't too slow.

NB It is not available on Amazon in any format so I guess I'm not reading it! That is really frustrating and annoying.

2) Adam Cesare-Video Night
It is after Jake takes the drugs that he begins to choke and Rhonda watches in horror as a cockroach/squid/porcupine hybrid crawls out of his mouth, and kills him. She tries to run but it hunts her down and takes over her body and memories. She then goes back to her house and kills her mother. Russ at the video shop has also been taken over by this alien thing, and he sells the drugs to Tom and Billy. The boys are planning a horror video night with Tom's girlfriend and her pal.

Oh dear. This had the plot of an 80's horror movie in the blurb and I picked it up for that reason but I wasn't at all impressed by the sample. Billy is a doormat who lets Tom walk all over him. He pays for the video but Tom gets to choose it, he pays for the drugs that Tom wants, he puts up with Tom inviting girlfriend Darcy to Billy's house for video night despite Billy not liking her. Will you grow a backbone and stop letting Tom walk all over you??? He even lets Tom's thoughtless behaviour upset his parents and lets Darcy run up bills on their phone. Tom is just a complete jerk who only cares about drink, drugs and having sex with a girl he doesn't much like, while treating his friend like crud. I didn't like either of them. The author also seems obsessed through the sample with sex-Jake and Rhonda before they die, Tom and Darcy and everyone else seems to think about it. I won't be reading this one. Disappointing.

3) MP McDonald-Infection
When Elly calls Cole to tell the media are reporting a viral outbreak on an island where he once worked in the bio-lab, his blood runs cold. Elly is CDC and is in Chicago trying to trace anyone from the island who flew into the US, sure it is the Sympatico Syndrome and Cole wonders if it has been modified from just contact with bodily fluids. Cole now has days to gather his loved ones and get supplies to a secure location before the panic goes public and society collapses.Elly warns him that the more people he tells, the less likely he'll be to get enough supplies to last the coming months.

I stopped reading this sample early because I've already decided that I want to read this one. It is just my kind of book with our hero gathering family and supplies as the clock ticks down to a full airborn outbreak and mass panic. I also liked the idea of the virus turning people into social and partying people before they basically explode into a bloody mess. It was a different take on a pandemic and I like that idea. Looking forward to reading it at some point!

  1. I checked out Trash Island on Amazon and here in the US the only format is in paperback and it is selling for almost $30! For 124 pages, that is ridiculous.

It also looks like the author never released an ebook version. Wonder what the story behind that decision is.

    1. It's strange isn't it. On Amazon here in the UK they have it as not available and no marketplace sellers, which is annoying. He's not going to get sales if he doesn't make it available!

  2. That last one sounds like my worst nightmare. Though, it might be interesting to learn what it’s like to enjoy the company of others. I’m very much a loner.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

    1. I'm not a social person either. I guess I had too many so called friends let me down over the years and I got used to my own company-other than my dad. I've never wanted the whole married with kids stuff and a huge social circle!

  3. This is such a good idea! I didn't know you could just read samples. Sad to hear that Video Night wasn't any good from the sample. It looks like it would pretty great.

    1. It took me a while to find it! On Amazon there is the box on the right hand side that has the Kindle Unlimited Read for 0 and buy now buttons. The smaller box right under it has the Send a free sample button. It'll give you a prologue and up to a couple of chapters which is great for testing out a new writer before buying!

  4. Well, I had been eyeing Video Night but after reading this, I think I'll put it on the backburner. How frustrating that the one is accessible!

    1. People with more patience about annoying characters will probably do ok with Video Night but you know what I'm like! I'm really annoyed about the other one-paperback unavailable and no ebook at all!

  5. I would be intrigued by Trash Island too! Those mysterious spheres are always trouble! :) too bad for the spoilers!

    1. I hate those prologue spoilers! I just want to read things as they happen! Yep, stay away from mysterious spheres on abandoned boats!

  6. Infection does sound like the best, although The Beast of Trash Island could have been good despite the prologue. (I hate prologues, too!) Too bad it wasn't available. I hate when that happens. :D

    1. I'm annoyed about the Beast being unavailable. It was only released in 2016! I do plan to get Infection though.

  7. Infection sounds pretty good! Sounds very intense. And The Beast of trash Island doesn't sound half bad either!
