The house tidying is entering the long but final stages! We are back to getting stuff done after the horror heatwave that brought everything to a close. On Sunday my new bookcase was put into my room and I'm so happy with it! The top two shelves will have my Fantasy and SF books along with adventure thrillers (I only have a few of those! Most are on my ereaders!) The bottom shelf has all my creature feature and large Indie horror books on it. I still need to dig out more from other shelves in my room but I'm happy with progress.
Next for my room is getting the TV unit tidied, throwing out the rubbish gathered on it that I no longer want or need, and refilling the shelves with things that have been sitting on the floor since Moses was a boy. That will give me my floor back and stop the hoovering from looking like an episode from Wacky Races! Next, clear all the stuff gathering around the other side of the room to get access into all my other bookcases. It'll let me sort those shelves out into genres. Voila, done! This could take over a week but the sooner done the better. I made a start last night.
My dad and I then want to take his less than half full bookcase from his bedroom and swap it with one designed for cds that is in the hall. He then gets his full cd collection in his bedroom, and I get half of the big bookcase that will soon sit in the hall for my dvd box sets! It's a good deal. I'm not looking forward to lugging huge IKEA bookcases up and down the stairs though! My dad will then sort out his cds at leisure and I've already planned how to fill the other bookcase! We'll get the bookcases moved in one day. It'll take longer to sort the contents, at least for my dad. I'll get mine done in an hour.
Next we tackle the kitchen. Many years ago, my mum got my dad to build a big wooden food storage cupboard but it takes up way too much space so we're now moving all of the contents into the built in cupboard already in the kitchen which my dad put some shelves into. We can get rid of that huge monstrosity and put smaller functional storage cabinets or shelves and wall hooks to make that small kitchen work better for us. I'll be taking charge of this operation and it'll also be a one day job! My dad will concentrate on tidying the cupboard under the sink where all his tools and stuff are, getting it into an order we can both understand! At a later date I'll clean out the second kitchen cupboard and get rid of the excess plates and things we don't use, so my gadgets like the iron, ice cream maker and deep fat fryer all find a new home.
Finally, back to the living room. My dad has some stuff lying around in here that needs a new home. I'm thinking that hall bookcase could house a few of these things, as will the sink cupboard in the kitchen, which is why it is getting done last! I'll be tidying out my computer desk to make it more functional and creating a little corner for myself near the fire. It should be cozy when winter comes! We can then tidy the hall so I can get into all the spaces currently filled with cardboard boxes to help with the moving of assorted stuff. After that I can hang a few things on the wall to sort of finish things off, and use that cool stained glass effect sticky windows thing for privacy in the bathroom and hall. I have those big scenic prints you can stick on your inside doors instead of painting them so that will brighten things up too.
The charity shops and the rubbish dump will also be busy as we get all this done. I'm taking the chance to have a booky clearout of the things I won't want to read again, the dvds I don't want to keep, leaving space for new purchases-you always have to think ahead, right?!
Each task can probably be done in a day but the recovery time between jobs plus doing the cooking, shopping and cleaning will make things take longer. I'm hoping to get this lot done in 4-6 weeks so we can relax with none of that to do over autumn and winter. As for the garden, I'm not thinking about it at all!!!
