Book Review: The Kraken Rises by Eric S Brown

While exploring the depths of an oceanic trench, the crew of the research station Platform Alpha One discover a new life form. This life form however isn’t new. It has existed since long before mankind walked the surface of the planet Earth and now that it has been awakened, it plans to take its place at the top of the food chain. Will the crew of Platform Alpha One and the inbound warships be able to stop the monster or now that the Kraken has arisen is it already too late?

My Review:
A two man mini sub is exploring the Trench, seeking proof that recent readings at the bottom may prove the existance of an ancient dormant life form. When the sub reaches the area, they are surrounded by angry squid like creatures who surround and attack this intruder to their domain and Thomas can only get out a mayday call before the sub is overwhelmed. A rescue mission is planned and the platform goes on to high alert...and that is when the squids start storming up onto the platform itself to seek out their new enemy...

USS Braxton is nearby on a military training exercise and they respond to the distress call going out from the platform, unaware of what exactly they are facing. However as they near the platform they see thousands of squid like creatures swarming all over the structure. It will take all the skill of their armed men to get on board and look for survivors but will they be able to escape...?

And deep beneath the surface lies that ancient creature found by the scientists, a huge prehistoric kraken who has been awoken from sleep by the mini sub's intrusion into the Trench. Protected by its multiple offspring, the Kraken is huge and it does not take kindly to anything else being in its territory as the entire naval convoy is about to find out...

If there is one that that I love reading, it is fast paced creature feature books like this one! I've read several series by this author including his Bigfoot Wars and Crypto Squad books and you are always entertained by what he writes. This book starts with the tension of the dive into the Trench to see what may be lurking there, and having read many books about sea monsters in these deep sea trenches, it's impossible not to think 'get out of there you wassocks!!!' You just KNOW that the sub is going to find itself in all kinds of trouble and of course, that is what happens. The attack on the sub begins and rescue is launched from the platform where the scientists are based.

The story then picks up the pace as the platform suddenly comes under attack from thousands of the squids and everyone on the platform is in extreme danger. A distress call is sent and the crew race to barricade themselves inside the platform, seeking a refuge and hoping that they can stay alive under the onslaught until help comes for them. We are also following the USS Braxton who picks up the distress call and goes to help them. They are then faced with the prospect of battling the squid to get inside the platform and look for the remaining survivors. Nearby are the ships from a battle fleet, who are also about to be dragged into a squid war...

This is very fast paced from the moment the sub meets the squids right through to the end of the book. The squid are pretty damn scary on their own as they overpower, rip apart and eat countless people. It is certainly brutal, gory and very exciting. Just don't get attached to any of the characters as you never know who is going to die next! I sat and read this book pretty much in one sitting and the action just never lets up. Even when the survivors are making plans to deal with the psycho squids, Mummy Kraken is gliding through the water like the world's biggest torpedo on a collision course with the entire battle fleet and that sends the book into overdrive. Great stuff!

If you love a fast paced and gory creature feature then you should be in for a good time with this book. I very much recommend it.

Read August 2017.
