Book Review: The Fool's Embrace by Joanna Harker

Get to the safehouse.

It was the only thing on Kevin's mind since the events that turned his quiet evening out into a nightmare. All he wanted was to hook up with the hot chick at the bar and forget about his ex-girlfriend, so how did he end up on the run from blood-thirsty vampires, undead dogs and who knows what else?

Oh, and that hot chick? Turned out to be an ungrateful pain in the ass. He quickly realizes that no good deed goes unpunished and that he now carries her Heart and mind in his body. A cold and calculated mind that doesn’t spare him any snark. She thinks she’s all that, just because she Sired him. But Kevin needs all the help he can get. Orlean at night seemed a lot friendlier when he was still human.

My Review:

*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Kevin's drunken attempt to pull a hot girl ends up with being attacked by vampires. Lo saves him by turning him and merging herself into his body as they make their escape, trying to dodge the vampires and hellhounds, teaching Kevin how to survive and gain control of some vampire skills, and reach a safe place by morning.

This was a very entertaining novella, the first in a series of adventures. Kevin is your totally normal guy who suddenly finds himself as a vampire and on the run with a demanding female Sire who talks to him inside his head. This leads to some very amusing conversations as Kevin struggles to make sense of things. Both he and Lo are good characters that you are rooting for, which I find really important. I think that the author did a good job of developing these characters which doesn't always happen in a novella. The plot was interesting and fast paced. It was nice to see someone write a different take on vampires. I found the Swarm idea to be very good and it was well explained without big info dumps. The descriptive work and simple storytelling was also excellent and I read this novella in one sitting. It also has a good mixture of action, humour and description in the correct amounts.

There wasn't anything about it that I didn't like. This novella should appeal to anyone with an interest in vampires and will be suitable for both adult and YA alike. There are a few bloody scenes of course, very minor sexual references in joke form and rare use of swearing. None of this bothered me and actually added to the story instead of detracting from it.

Overall I think that this author is a great storyteller and I will definitely be looking for the next part of the story, and would try any other writing that she does in this genre. A fun, entertaining read!
