Chuckles Chat #57 Decorating Your Blog

Welcome to Chuckles Chat where great blogging minds unite to discuss the topics of the day mainly in the book and blogging world. I'll be sharing my thoughts on a topic and then inviting you all to share your thoughts. It's ok to disagree but PLEASE be respectful of each other's views! All of the comments on my blog are moderated and offensive posts ie racist, bigoted will not be published!

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

This week I'm looking at the way we decorate our blogs.

My blog is set up to be how I like to look at it as I am there more than anyone else! I like my blog to reflect my likes and my personality, and I think I've been able to do that. I used to have Count Von Count as my profile photo everywhere I went and it was only when I became aware of the harsh penalties for copywrite that I changed it. My dinosaur profile photo has been legally taken from free usage site Pixabay instead.

I used to have dramatic fantasy art on my blog that depicted the kind of books I read but I took them down for copywrite reasons. I've replaced them with Game of Thrones banner designs from Pixabay. I like the decoration and it lets any casual visitor to the blog see that I love it! I also have a cartoonish Harry Potter figure just underneath that which all Harry fans will also easily spot. I'm always happy to chat on those two subjects! And I'm a devoted Hufflepuff if anyone was wondering! I like badgers and it suits my personality!

I display my blog awards at the bottom of the blog but this is mainly for my reference. My memory is really bad as to which I've done or not done so it's easier to have them in one place instead of searching for them. If I'm nominated for an award I already have, if the questions sound like fun, I'll still go ahead and answer them, and I do like book tags. I like questions that are more book related or maybe about favourite things. I don't do the ones that ask about your social media activities, ones where you have to pick a pile of characters from books and draw them out of a hat to pair against questions. If the questions don't suit me, I pass on it!

I have my virtual pets lined up on the right margin as well and I always love just feeding them for fun. However the stupid player that you need to do that is forever playing up and not working so they don't always appear, which is a shame! Take a moment to scroll to the very bottom of the blog where Count Von Count is ready to sing the counting song to you! This is actually very funny as someone has uploaded the video and bleeped out the word 'count' which makes the song suddenly sound very rude!

I have a few Goodreads related items there as well-displaying what I'm currently reading, my progress in my Goodreads Reading Challenge, my site activity, my favourite book quotes. It's a bit of added info for any interested blog visitor to see what I have been doing. I also have my twitter feed displayed. I am trying to be more active on Twitter but I don't always have the time to spend there!

Last year I decided to add the snowflakes effect drifting down over the blog posts. It looked really nice but I wanted something that would last all year and be decorative so I went looking. I finally found this lovely colourful fireworks effect which is fun! When it works...

What do you like to decorate your blog with and why?

  1. I just gave my blog a complete redesign for the first time in years. Just started to feel stale, and I wanted it to look a bit more professional and personal.

    1. Your new blog style is really good Bob...I'd say it does look professional. Sometimes a revamp is just what is needed!

  2. oh this is like my TOP favorite blogging topic ever. I love talking about blog design [if you haven't noticed!] :) I can't say how I like to decorate it because I'm always changing it LO I guess I can say I like mine to be magazine layout, not too busy and artsy. :)
and yes I think it has to reflect the blogger personality!

    1. My blog is for fun so I can get away with some of the stuff I have on it! I don't need it to look professional or anything as I don't bother with stats and ARCs and stuff. I suppose I'm lucky that I can do what I want with it!

  3. I love that you design your site for you! It shows your personality and I love it. I do the same. Mine is pretty minimal since the redesign because too much distracts me. The only thing I'd like on mine is one of those fancy cartoony dog banners with my pic of Bailey next to Bark's Book Nonsense but I can't figure out how to do that :(

    1. I'm not great with design so I can't help you there but I certainly like your idea. You can never have too many dogs on a blog!

  4. I like your virtual pets - they are cute :) And also all the goodreads features - they are so handy to keep track of how much you read, what you are reading atm etc. And the quote generator as well!

I do like personalized blogs more than just a random design, that doesn't tell me anything about the blogger. But that's just personal preference.

My own blog features mostly my personal images as well. I have my rabbits as mascots and one of my shelves as a header. I am using my favourite book quote at the top as well & link to my instagram account, as well as feature what I am reading on goodreads.

There's some stats as well, like the number of views & followers - I like to look at stats :D

  5. I use my blog set up and decorations to remind me what I need to do. lol. I have a reason to my madness, though lately I've been slacking at it. With the links and such, so I remember to post reviews in places and where they aren't yet.

    1. I don't think I could be that organised! If things get too complicated around me I tend to go into meltdown!

  6. I do agree that every blogger should design their blog to fit their taste since we all look at our own more than anyone else. I feel like I have too many things on my blog but when I start trying to decide what to get rid of, I feel like everything serves a purpose.

    1. I always have to be happy with my set up! If you think you need the stuff you have, keep it. I don't think your blog looks too busy or anything.

  7. I like your fireworks display. I used to have some fun zombie stuff on my blog but since I review children's books also, I took them down. Now I'm thinking I might add some back.

    1. I haven't seen my fireworks display for a week or so which is annoying. I don't know what's happening with it...Zombie stuff DOES sound fun! I think I need a few monsters on mine as well...

  8. I also love your design. I added Paul Anka, my virtual pet, after enjoying yours so much. I think it's great that you personalize your blog - it's one of the reasons you started out as one of my favorite blogs years ago when I first discovered you!

    1. I like to think of my blog as comfy! My virtual pets only seem to work half the time and my fireworks are gone plus the replacement that blogger offers won't work! Gah! Thanks for your kind words Barb...you know I love my visits to the farm too!

  9. Interesting discussion! My blog used to have more stuff in the sidebars, but I took most of it off. I was worried about computer performances issues. My computer is old, and it gets really slow when it has to load a bunch of stuff. I keep things simple so I don’t have to wait forever for my computer to show me my own site.

    1. Yeah lots of stuff can have that drawback but I seem unable to resist a bit of clutter! Older computers are a real problem for that which is really unfair if you have one. Simple in that case is the only option really.

  10. I have been thinking of revamping mine a little bit. I want some new pic headers and want to clean up the sidebar a bit. Simplify, simplify, simplify is the motto for my blog.

    1. Changing stuff over can be exciting to plan. I'd like to add more of my interests but I feel I need to lose stuff before I do it and I don't want to lose anything really!
