Sookie Stackhouse always found it difficult to date - she's cute, but not many guys are comfortable with her mind-reading abilities. But vampires have no problems with Sookie's talent - she can't pick up much of anything form the undead.
But ther's only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with - at least voluntarily - right now, and that's Bill. But recently he's been a little distant - in another state distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him, and next thing Sookie knows, she's off to Jackson, Mississippi, to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead. It's a dangerous little haunt where the elusive vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some Type O - but when Sookie finally finds Bill, he's not only in trouble, but caught in an act of serious betrayal. Should she save him, or sharpen some stakes?
Bill is on a secret mission for his Vampire Queen but when he goes missing, Eric and Pam break the news to Sookie that Bill was about to leave her for his former vampire lover Lorena. Despite her sense of betrayal Sookie agrees to go undercover in a dangerous vampire club to find out what has happened to Bill and if he is still alive. With help from Bubba and werewolf Alcide, Sookie finds herself in bar fights and surrounded by dead and injured bodies, and makes a dangerous enemy in Alcide's ex Debbie.
This was another great book. I love the humour Ms Harris brings into it with the wonderful Bubba getting a starring role in this book(yea!), and the brilliant Eric still trying to seduce Sookie. Eric is just one of the best characters I've read in any urban fantasy series. He is sleazy, rude and persistant but you can't help loving him. I also love the sarcastic Pam, Eric's second in command. She always comes out with something rude or inappropriate to make me laugh. In this book Alcide the werwolf is introduced and I liked him. It was also the first appearance of his psycho bitch ex girlfriend Debbie who of course I hated for picking on poor Sookie, just as the author intended. Bill doesn't feature much in the first part of this book but the reader is gunning for him for breaking poor Sookie's heart and you really wonder why he would be involved with someone like Lorena!
The plot involves Alcide taking Sookie to Club Dead where vampires and shifters hang out and it proves to be a place that puts Sookie in constant danger. Psycho werewolves coming on to her end up dead in her apartment leading to body disposal duty, and a brawl there later caused by the Fellowship of the Sun puts her life in danger but does give her a lead on where Bill is being held. Now it is a matter of how to get to him and rescue him. There were the usual good action scenes and as usual Sookie is getting hurt, which is to be expected when a human is moving in such dangerous circles. The humour is excellent and is provided by my favourite characters in Eric, Pam and Bubba. It has everything that I enjoy in an urban fantasy book and I have really enjoyed these first three books in the series.
When I get into one of the Sookie books I just sit up through the night to read it. Sleep be damned!
