Since January, we've all been watching with a mixture of interest, worry and frustration since we first hears of the coronavirus from Wuhan in China. Every day, we watched and waited for that first case in our own countries, with Chuckles trying not to think of all the scary pandemic prepper novels that I've read that kill everyone or turn the population into zombies! We've seen conflicting opinions from so called experts, the media trying to scare everyone with scary death headlines and constant questions about what our government is or isn't doing or should be doing etc. It's all very confusing.
The UK was in a good position when we stopped the flights from China, chased up contacts of those infected and isolated those rescued from Wuhan. We escaped a disaster when the Diamond Princess saga began and a few cases related to that hotel in Tenerife and a case connected to Iran. However the real problem began with a tide of Brits returning back from breaks in northern Italy and our cases here exploded. Lots of the rich people and kids from private schools take breaks at Italian ski resorts so quite a few came back infected. As I write the UK has 590 confirmed cases with 60 of them in Scotland and ten of those cases in my region. There have been ten deaths across the UK.
OK I'm mad about one thing. My region is Greater Glasgow and Clyde, which has a large population and geographical area. We've been told there are ten cases in GG&C. Right, so WHERE? Renfrewshire? East Renfrewshire? Inverclyde? Glasgow? East Dunbartonshire? West Dunbartonshire? North Lanarkshire? South Lanarkshire? It is quite important information to know if it is in my direct area or many miles away! It is so frustrating for them not to tell you. If the cases were at a doctor's surgery in South Lanarkshire or Inverclyde, it wouldn't affect me at all but if it is an Asda worker at my local store which my dad visits weekly, I need to bloody know so I can make better decisions! in 2019, 611 748 people lived in Glasgow alone so they surely need to tell us where the cases are!!! RARG! Feeling a bit agitated this morning.
Chuckles Stress Level 10am:
My dad and I went out before his horse racing today at 1pm to go to Asda. I added a bit more bottled water to our supply as I like to get the fizzy water and add soda stream concentrate to it for a refreshing carbonated drink. My actual soda stream machine barely adds any fizz to the water so I go through a lot of bottled water. I also bought a few sandwich spreads, some Ben & Jerry ice cream, Chicken Bovril, Monster Munch crisps multipacks and pizza. Essentials of course! It was a madhouse! The shelves with tinned meat were stripped bare, the water and toilet rolls had taken a serious hit as had the bread and milk. Everyone was rushing around like the Doomsday Clock was ready to expire and I found the panic kind of contagious! By the time I got home I was in a state of mild panic!
Chuckles Stress Level 2pm
I'm now watching our PM Boris Johnson with the decisions made in his latest government emergency COBRA meeting. The Chief Scientific Officer has said that the UK in reality has between 5000 and 10000 cases of coronavirus but not all have been identified yet. We are about four weeks behind the crisis in Italy, it seems but disruption is coming. School trips cancelled, anyone with cold type symptoms to stay at home for a week, so that is me indoors from now on as I have the persistant sniffles. In the next few weeks there are big changes coming with potential social isolation, cancelling all events and closing schools. I'm still feeling a bit uptight but it could be weeks before the worst comes.
Chuckles Stress Level 6pm:
I'll be keeping my 'diaries' updated as the weeks go by and things change!

They're STILL NOT TESTING HERE IN THE US even though they're telling us to avoid big events and new cases are cropping up every day. It is insane. I fear for the sick and the older folks. It's going to be ruin so many people's lives. Stay safe, everyone.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have enough testing kits here to test everyone with symptoms. I reckon they must give priority to health workers and emergency personnel. It is worrying that the tests are not going to be available for everyone needing tested. I echo what you said-I want all my blogging friends out there to stay safe.
DeleteHang in there! People have started to panic more where I live now, too. It's crazy to see them clean out the local stores of toilet paper and bottled water. Only 5 confirmed cases so far here in Utah, but I expect there'll be more soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I always have full cupboards and my fridge freezer just needs the odd top up! I was already in a good position so I only needed to buy in the treat items mostly. Now that I'm going into isolation with my dad other than the small local shop round the road from us, I'm happy that I have everything we need. I think the real panic will set in today after all the announcements yesterday.
DeleteIt's getting a bit more tense here and it seems like the main focus is throwing blame and finding fault with everything anyone does which is frustrating. Since we homeschool we can pretty dramatically limit our contact with the outside world and I'm seriously considering doing that. My husband still has to go to work but that can be dealt with and if it gets really bad he can work from home.
ReplyDeleteOpposition politicians seem intent on pointscoring over government and saying how they'd do everything so much better but really, this is a totally new experience for everyone and we're all a bit frazzled I think! It's hard to know who is doing the right thing at the right time-I guess we'll only see afterwards! I hope your husband can work from home soon as it is about to get real I think.
DeleteI am glad that the world is taking this so seriously. Safety is so important. My daughter's school is extending spring break into 2 weeks and will move to online classes after that. They are limiting events to only those under 1,000 in my area. It will be interesting to see what other changes occur. I hope you have a low stress rest of the week!
ReplyDeleteI think your daughter's school is doing the right thing. They have to keep the students safe. Things are moving so fast here that my stomach is on edge every time I see 'breaking news' on TV! I do feel calmer now that the isolating measures are coming in-waiting for it was worse!
DeleteI don't know where I'm at with this. Not panicked yet but a lot of people here are. We seem to be surrounded by other states with cases and haven't any here. The roads are very busy and toilet paper is out everywhere. I am doing some added stocking up just because everyone else is and they are the usual staples I purchase.
ReplyDeleteI've been getting a bit frazzled over the last week with all the uncertainty but now that the emergency measures are coming in, there is more certainty and I feel a lot calmer. Now I know where I am, y'know? Stocking up on stuff you'll use is a good idea-I only lose patience with those who bulk buy things they won't use in time before the date is up on the products!
Deletehere in the us...well...i would like more information about my specific area too.

Yeah, the lack of detail is annoying. I think we need to know what towns have cases, which GP surgery or hospital an infected person went into, which shops might be infected...we don't need to name the infected but we need to know their movements and if we came into contact at that same time!
DeleteThe self-isolate if you develop a cough or a fever is a bit worrying as I frequently have a fever... Completely unrelated to covid-19! But next time it hits, I'm going to have to isolate - because you never know - and then when it turns out it's not, go back to work but when I get a fever again? Rinse and repeat or what? *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI've had a cough on and off since November! I get a raised temperature when I get a dse of the trots too but not due to coronavirus thankfully! I do NOT want a dose of it as it looks awful even for healthy people. It's going to be a tough one for you to know what to do for the best...good luck Nicci and stay safe as you can!
