We always love to try a new author especially in our favourite genres, don't we! Well over the last couple of years I've seen new horror, apocalypse, thriller, SF and urban fantasy authors being talked about and recommended, and it is way past time that I tried a few of them. I decided to put together this list of some of the newer authors I've heard about, and by the end of this year I hope to have tried at least a few of them.
Which book by each of these authors would you most recommend as a starting point for me? Which authors did you like or were disappointed by? Which books by the author did you like or dislike? Which are you also planning to try for the first time?

ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Trying new authors to find new ones to follow can be a lot of fun!
DeleteIn the horror section, I would definitely recommend Bastianelli, Hendrix and Janz. Some of Janz's stuff has been hit or miss for me, but overall, more hit than miss. I also want to try Mur Lafferty and think I have a couple of her books. Looks like you have a great list to start trying from!
ReplyDeleteI have a LOT to catch up with! These are all authors where I have at least one book in my house, whether digital or physical copies. For Lafferty, I have Six Wakes. I'm not sure about the cloning thing but the rest of the plot sounds good. I have a few Janz to pick from and two Hendrix.
DeleteTerry Tyler has to get my vote!
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest Tipping Point to start her Project Renova series :-)
Tipping Point is the one I have so that's good then! I have so many that I want to read them all first!
DeleteI liked Campbell's Omega Days, though I haven't yet read on in the series. And Excavation by James Rollins was the first book I read by him and is still a favorite. And Steve McHugh is an author that is high on my list to read this year, too. :)
ReplyDeleteMy dad read and liked five Omega Days books and we have similar tastes so fingers crossed! My concern about Rollins is that it is a meaty sized book so I hope it isn't too slow getting into the story! A few reviews on Steve McHugh have given me a few doubts but I will try them.
DeleteI haven't read any of those authors but I hope you find a few you like.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of popular authors on the list so I should like some of them!
DeleteI've only read Lisa Jewell and Jenny Lawson from your list and love them both. I'd be curious to see how Lawson in particular comes off to a non-American. There are so many things that are so uniquely Texas that I think would just come off as crazy to non-Americans I think.
ReplyDeleteMost of the stuff I read is by American authors so hopefully there won't be an issue! I've been meaning to read her books for ages but never got round to them.
DeleteI must be reading a lot of thrillers lately haha because I can totally vouch for Shari Lapena, McManus, Jewell and McNeil. Mur Lafferty too especially after her Six Wakes book. Becky Chambers oh my gosh yes.
ReplyDeleteI certainly have seen quite a few of these authors on your blog Greg! So many things to try!
Deleteout of your lists, one author that jumped out at me was mae clair. i have read some of her books and enjoyed them
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
I really want to read her book with the Mothman!
DeleteI am reading my third McManus book right now. I adore her books. They are exactly what I want and need, when it comes to YA mystery
ReplyDeleteI don't tend to dabble in YA much these days but I do like the sound of the plots of her books.
DeleteAnything by James Rollins is good and I've enjoyed a bunch by Janz. Some of those on your lists are authors I'm wanting to try too.
ReplyDeleteFinding the time to get all these authors read has me concerned! I'm not really getting on with it at the moment!
DeleteI love Annette Marie! However, I think you'd maybe prefer Stephanie Foxe... Annette Marie has slow burn romance that mostly takes a back seat to the stories but IS still present. Stephanie Foxe doesn't really have a lot of romance (from the one's I read anyway) and it drove me nuts! lol. The stories were pretty good though despite leaving the romance loving part of me utterly deflated.
ReplyDeleteI can put up with background romance if there isn't too much and I like the characters but a big no to love triangles! The Foxe books sound more to my taste!
DeleteYes!! I LOVE Snowball by Gregory Bastianelli! I'd love to see what you think of that one if you pick it up!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to make Snowball a priority!
