Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish
in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of
2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to
bring bookish friends together. http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/
This week's topic is Books I can't believe I read, which doesn't suit me as I read what I want to read and my choices don't shock me! My topic is going to be Inspired by...meaning a book that inspired me to love a genre or theme.
1) Jon Krakauer-Into Thin Air
I read this true story of the Everest disaster in 1996 for a book challenge about mountains and I liked it so much that I started devouring non fiction about high mountain climbing expeditions.

2) Kelley Armstrong-Stolen (WOTO #2)
I stumbled across Goodreads while looking for vampire and werewolf books online, and heard the term 'urban fantasy'. The first I read under this genre was Kelley Armstrong and then suddenly I had to grab many more! Had to read #2 first as it was all the library had!

3) Stephen King-It
Being introduced to Stephen King when I was young was a game changer! No more books about horses and teen detectives, it was killer clowns and monsters! My all-time favourite book, it made me love horror.

4) John Marsden-Tomorrow when the war began
It wasn't the first apocalypse book I read but it was the first fast paced, tension filled one I loved and it made me want to read more. I liked these action and tension books where there is always something happening.

5) Franklin Horton-Borrowed World
I read this the same week I found Darrell Maloney. This was my first 'prepper on a dangerous journey home while family try to cope with the dangers at home' book and I loved it! The switch from following one to the other keeps the tension high.

6) Philippa Gregory-The Other Boleyn Girl
A bookcrossing rec that had more romance and scandal than my usual books but I fell in love with this Tudor world and now I can't get enough of Henry VIII and his wives and Court. It's weird that romance in this genre is something I like!

7) Alastair Campbell-The Blair Years
I've always been interested in politics but reading extracts from these political diaries was really interesting. It led me to start reading memoirs and diaries of political figures in the UK and US on all sides.

8) ZA Recht-Plague of the Dead
Zombies always fascinated me but discovering this book led me to fast paced zombie horror with gore, death and scary stuff! It was a whole new zombie experience and has led me to lots of wonderful new books and authors!

9) Michael Crichton-Jurassic Park
This was my first dinosaur book, read after the film and it awoke my childhood love of dinosaurs. Now I try to read all kinds of books with rampaging dinosaurs and lost islands and it is something I enjoy.

10) Darrell Maloney-Alone
This was the first book about an EMP that I ever read and it really opened my eyes to what it was going to be like if the power grid failed. It frightened but fascinated me. Now I can't get enough of reading about EMP disasters!

I love the twist you put on the subject. I also loved how Stephen King took you from horses to monsters - that's quite a leap!
ReplyDeleteKind of hard to go back to kids book after It, Carrie and Salems Lot!
DeleteI like your topic! The book that got me into reading Stephen King was The Tommyknockers. That’s weird because it’s definitely not one of his better books.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It was one of the last of the early books I read and I didn't think it was one of his best. The TV version wasn't bad though...
Deleteoh I'm surprise not so see our beloved Nicholas on this list! ;)
ReplyDeleteMan I NEED to get to to a Kelley Armstrong book!
No this list is about the first of a type of book that got me into others. ZA Recht got me really into zombies. It was a couple of years of zombies before I discovered writers like NSS.
DeleteThe first book I remember reading on my own was The Witches Buttons by Ruth Chew so I think that kicked off my love of creepy reads. I'm so glad you found King!
ReplyDeleteIf I hadn't found King then Laymon I might never have found urban fantasy or got into zombies!
DeleteI tried Kelley Armstrong a year or so ago with her first city of the Lost book, and I'm hooked. And Jurassic Park is the only Crichton book I've read, but I liked it.
ReplyDeleteThe Lost World wasn't great as a book but the film was great. I've read a few Crichton I liked but his later stuff was over my head!
DeleteNice take on this week's topic. I'd like to read The Other Boleyn Girl. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThe Other Boleyn Girl was a really good read and the perfect introduction to the Tudors. I loved the Boleyn Inheritance too. Thanks for stopping by!
