Welcome to my Game of Thrones Gossip,
where us fanatics get the chance to discuss everything we love
about this amazing TV series. I
decided to do a whole series of these discussion posts that let us say
everything we want and enjoy every second of it! Please feel free to comment fully and without restriction!
I have to warn you that it is important that you have seen all six seasons before reading any of these posts because these posts and blogger comments will be exploding spoilers all over the place. If you haven't watched the series and plan to, be warned that it's a bad idea to be here right now! I take no responsibility if you read on and things are spoiled for you.
Now I'm looking at the main characters introduced in season three, what our season two characters were doing and looking at all the bests bits. Enjoy the season three posts!
Dany's ship arrives in Astapor where she needs to find herself an army to take to Westeros. Jorah has suggested that she buy The Unsullied, a slave race that obey without questioned and who are also eunuchs. Their reputation is fearsome but Dany is uncomfortable with being a slave owner of a foreign army and how that might look to the people of Westeros. Jorah points out that she has little choice and will be a fairer leader for The Unsullied than what they experience under current owners.
She is shown around Astapor by slave owner Kraznys mo Nakloz and his slave girl interpreter Missandei. He speaks in Low Valyrian, unaware that Dany can understand him, frequently insulting her. Missandei translates what he says but filters out the insults which she finds very embarrassing. Kraznys explains the training and obediance of the Unsullied, cutting the nipple off an unflinching soldier to prove his point, and talking about how the final task that has to be completed to pass training is to kill a newborn baby in front of its mother. Dany is revolted.
Dany and Jorah explore Astapor while she considers what to do and Dany becomes distracted by a child who is shyly following them. The child approaches and offers her the gift of a sphere which Dany takes with a smile, but a hooded stranger knocks it out of her hand and Jorah tackles him while Dany is knocked. A manticore crawls from the sphere and the hooded man kills it with his dagger. The child hisses in anger and vanishes leaving Dany to thank the man for saving her life. He reveals himself to be Ser Barristan Selmy, and begs her to forgive him for failing her father during Robert's Rebellion and she accepts him into her Queensguard. Jorah is not pleased by the development.
Negotiations with Kraznys continue and Dany agrees to buy all 8000 soldiers in exchange for Drogon, a prospect that horrifies both Jorah and Barristan, who argue with her. She also demands that she be given Missandei as a gift which is agreed to. Dany asks Missandei about herself and indicates that if she follows Dany it will be to go to war and perhaps die, which Missandei is happy to accept. The exchange begins with Dany exchanging Drogon's lead for the golden whip which signals that she is now the owner of The Unsulled Army.
Dany speaks her first instruction to her new army in Valyrian which surprises Barristan, Jorah and Kraznys, who now realises that she has understood every word he has said to her. He then complains that Drogon is not obeying him and Dany reminds him that he is no longer dealing with a slave. As he struggles to control Drogon, Dany turns her attention to the army, ordering them to kill all of the masters and to avoid hurting any innocent people as they free all the slaves. She then tells Drogon to burn Kraznys which he happily does. Astapor quickly falls and Dany sets her slave army but but asks them if they will fight for her as free men. They agree instantly and now Dany has a true army who are not slaves. The next plan to to march on to Yunkai to free the slaves there to join her.

I love it when the dragons barbeque people. :)
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I loved Astapor...his insults were funny, Drogon gets to kill him, Barristan Selmy turning up...fun!
DeleteI enjoyed this part of the series. The dragons are getting bigger, Dany is getting tougher. And I loved it when Selmy entered the picture!
ReplyDeletePoor Barristan! I loved his character!
Deletethis wasn't one of my favorite episodes of GoT. Astapor was an amazing fantasy world like the rest but for some reason I didn't care very much about the story during these episodes. With the exception of the crucifixions I think the plot here was a little slow.
ReplyDeleteThat's the great thing about this series...different things appealing to different people! I did find the insults and freeing of the slaves fun!
