60 Years Of Coronation Street-1988/89

This image is my own and I use it to promote my favourite TV series. I make no money from this. Coronation Street is the property of ITV.

In December this year, serial drama/soap Coronation Street will celebrate 60 years on British TV. I have been watching it from the late 70's and remain a big fan. Between now and December I will be looking at the best bits from the Corrie years. This time I'm looking at my ten favourite storylines/episodes from 1988 and 1989.

1988
1) Bet Gilroy's baby
Bet and Alec get a shock when they discover that Bet is pregnant and they try to get their heads around being parents at their age. Just as they have both warmed to the idea, Bet suffers a heartbreaking miscarriage and the couple try to pick up the pieces. Very moving storyline.

2) Alan Bradley
We now get to see the real Alan emerge as he borrows money from Rita for a new business, starts an affair with another woman in the hope of getting her money and then decides to con Rita by using her dead husband's name to re-mortgage her house to pay for his bank loan after they get back together. Cretin!

3) Audrey love triangle
Dippy Audrey enjoys playing tour guide to her 'friend' Malcolm, her son Stephen's adopted dad visiting from Canada. Malcolm has come over to steal Audrey away from Alf, having fallen for her when she visited Canada but Alf knows his game and is determined to get the visitor away from his wife. Go Alf!!!

4) Ivy marries Don
As hard as she is on Gail, I felt so bad for Ivy when she lost her beloved husband Bert a few years back and I liked cab driver Don Brennan from the moment he appeared. Don was good for Ivy and they were a happy couple at that time.

5) Mavis marries Derek
Mavis and Derek finally get married after countless years of dithering about it and thankfully, nobody gets julted this time round!

1989
1) Alan Bradley
Alan's real evil comes out when he gets his dodgy loan and tries to rape Dawn, who tells his secrets to Rita. Rita confronts him with his con and Alan tries to kill her, stopped by Jenny and Martin. He is sentenced to time served on remand and returns to stalk Rita who has a breakdown and flees. Alan is killed by a Blackpool tram when he pursues Rita there. One of my favourite ever storylines!

2) The end of Brian and Gail
Gail no longer loves Brian and he reverts back to life as a single man, clubbing and picking up women. After a row where Gail demands a divorce, he storms out. At a club that night, he intervenes when a group of men harrass a woman he is chatting up and he is fatally stabbed. I loved the scenes where Gail and Ivy have to deal with the aftermath.

3) Ken and Wendy affair
Ken starts leaking council secrets in his newspaper, stories coming from secretary Wendy but Deirdre gets the blame. She reports Wendy and gets her fired and Ken takes her on at the paper, starting an affair that is rumbled by both Mike and Deirdre. At Christmas Deirdre tells Ken to choose-but Ken asks Deirdre if he can keep seeing Wendy until he gets her out of his system!

4) Vera's feud with Tina
Jack still considers himself a romeo and Tina is fed up with him chatting her up so she agrees to a date where she fleeces Jack to be wined at dined but gives him nothing in return. When Vera finds out she goes for Tina in the Rovers for making a fool of Jack. In a touching moment, Jack consoles a weeping Vera by telling her that he does love her.

5) Gail and Martin relationship
Gail gets her life back on track with Martin helping out by babysitting Nicky who thinks he is great. The whole street, especially a furious Ivy, are stunned when the friendship between Gail and Martin turns into a fling. The couple are married in 1991. I remember being captivated by this story when it was originally screened!
