Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!  http://www.brokeandbookish.com/

This week it's ten books on your tbr from a genre you like. Yes I think I can manage this one! I'm going with Ten Apocalypse Books on my TBR.

1) A. American-Going Home (Survivalist #1)
What do you do when all the electronics die, leaving you standed 250 miles from home with no car or phone? Morgan faces a long trek home in a new dangerous world. Ooh I just can't get enough of these kinds of books and I'm so looking forward to getting stuck into the series!

2) Annie Berdel-Alpha Farm (Alpha Farm #1)
Emma is already changing to a self sufficient lifestyle when the EMP hits and she gathers fellow prepper women into action. Love the sound of this girls fight back plot along with the setting up of an underground railway being set up. This sounds a bit different and of course I love EMP stories. I like the sound of this.

3) John L Campbell-Omega Days (Omega Days #1)
A priest, a college student and a reality tv prepper all have to face the zombie apocalypse. Only the smart and the determined will survive...I love the book cover and it's a zombie apocalypse so of course I want to read it!

4) GR Carter-Dawn of Darkness (Fortress Farm #1)
In the midst of cults and psychos after the apocalypse, a new community tries to rebuild to provide a secure future for their children. Again, this is the kind of apocalypse read that interests me and I bought the series.

5) Norman Christof-America's Sunset
A massive solar flare changes the country forever just as Dawson gets his life back on track. Jake has been planning for disaster for years, building the ultimate refuge. Ememies use the aftermath to attack. Yes to all of that thank you!

6) Boyd Craven-One Man's Opus
As civil unrest threatens their country, Rick comes back into Tina's life and with her furry companion Opus, the trio decide to bug out looking for a safe refuge. From the description it sounds like the dog takes a bigger role so that attracts me even more. Love apocalypse dogs!

7) S Johnathan Davis-900 Miles
John is 900 miles away from his wife when the apocalypse comes and he faces a harrowing journey home. Zombies are going to be the least of his worries...Love the book cover and it sounds like my kind of plot.

8) Jay J Falconer-Redfall (Redfall #1)
A mysterious red rain falls and takes down the grid and a global conspiracy seek to take charge of everything. Survivors turn to outcast and loner Simon and his unique skills. Intrigued! Red rain and a man with a mysterious past? I'll give this a try...

9) G Michael Hopf-The End (The New World #1)
Ex Marine Corp veteran Gordon knows that getting survivors together is the key to survival but his community is breaking down. He is faced with tough choices in this new reality. I do enjoy these apocalypse survival books! Good series covers too...

Book Review: Planet Sasquatch by Eric S Brown

The Earth Republic has seen better days . . . Recovering from a near decisive attack on the Earth by the forces of the Coalition and desperate to take the war to the enemy, the Earth Republic turns its attention to a strange planet named Lancaster's World. This planet contains resources the Republic must have in order to keep their damaged and war-weary fleet active, but obtaining them may come at too high a price. An expedition is launched to Lancaster's World to lay claim to the planet and set up a mining operation on its surface. Unfortunately for them, the planet is already inhabited . . . and its inhabitants may prove to be more than even the heavily-armed marines accompanying the expedition can handle. Drawing on elements from Bigfoot War 1 - 4, and taking the series in a bold new direction, Bigfoot War 5: Planet Sasquatch is a must-read for fans of the series and anyone else who has been fascinated by the mysterious beast known as Bigfoot.

My Review:
Captain Ryan leads the space fleet to Lancaster's World, where mining will begin for Tribaritan that is necessary to power their stardrives, unaware that the planet is already home to an aggressive group of Sasquatches. With radio interference hampering communications, and power levels dropping quicker than expected, the troops escorting the mining ships set up a perimeter and send out their first patrol to get an idea of where they have landed. Then they find the big footprint...

The advance team don't allow the scientist more than a basic look at the footprint which she identifies as a Sasquatch but they do stop to look at an abandoned and crippled ship, taking a look at the ship log which details a Sasquatch attack on the crew. Now the team have to get back to base and report that the planet is full of hostile life forms before the Sasquatch decide to attack...

I'm not generally a space plot fan but I'm happy to read them if the planet is full of dinosaurs or Sasquatch! This was a decent story though it took a little longer to get to the actual monster attacks. Just as exciting and gory when the action kicks off so that keeps me happy.

1) Book Review: The White Road by Sarah Lotz
This excellent in depth review from Mogsy really gets you thinking about the claustrophobia of  the Welsh caverns and then the sheer danger of a trek on Everest. I very much enjoyed the review-not sure yet whether or not I'll read this one.

Book Review: Big Mushy Happy Lump

Sarah Andersen's hugely popular, world-famous Sarah's Scribbles comics are for those of us who boast bookstore-ready bodies and Netflix-ready hair, who are always down for all-night reading-in-bed parties and extremely exclusive after-hour one-person music festivals.

In addition to the most recent Sarah's Scribbles fan favorites and dozens of all-new comics, this volume contains illustrated personal essays on Sarah's real-life experiences with anxiety, career, relationships and other adulthood challenges that will remind readers of Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half and Jenny Lawson's Let's Pretend This Never Happened. The same uniquely frank, real, yet humorous and uplifting tone that makes Sarah's Scribbles so relatable blooms beautifully in this new longer form.

My Review:
As soon as I read the first book I just had to order the second one! Again this was full of cartoons about anxiety, life, the down side of being a woman, book love and the things that really drive you mad. Lots to relate to! And the cartoons are as manic and funny as the first book.

It starts with the difference between how a man or woman compliment us, showing how women are happy to compliment each other's underwear without it feeling weird. That is so true! I can relate to the look of pure horror on her face when she realises the price of the outfit she likes. The motivation going out the window happens to me a lot! The author discusses the unfairness of puberty on women which made me laugh.

The cartoon I most relate to is the book buying. The cartoons show her spending the very minimum on food and household items so she can splurge like a rich girl on the pile of books! Oh yes this is me!!! Books are like the most importance purchases in my life!!! I also relate to the fact that when you are reading on public transport with your headphones on, someone always prods you to ask what you are reading. Grrr! As for being plagued by bills, nuisance calls and spam, welcome to my life! Those things drive me nuts.

There is another section in the book where the author details her experiences with social anxieties, stress and over thinking things. Again I can relate a lot to that. But I like the way it is delivered in a fun and engaging way so the narrative doesn't get too heavy.

I look forward to more of these books if she does them!

Chuckles Cover Love #28

If there is one thing that makes a great book even better, it is when it has a cover that we love! The cover design is what catches the eye as we browse through a bookstore shelf or check out the Amazon or Goodreads recommendations. The right cover makes me look closer at a book, to read the blurb and maybe make a purchase. A poor cover might mean I never look at the blurb at all.

This week I'm looking at another apocalypse series. The covert art is quite simple but I find it effective and it certainly matches the subject matter.
