Chuckles Retro Reads #2: Fear the Light by William Massa

Who Murdered Dracula?

Many had tried to kill the Count over the centuries. All had failed. Until now...

Eight vampires gather at their maker's castle to solve the mystery of who killed Dracula. But as the sun rises outside the chateau, a voice cries out and another vampire is slain. Trapped inside their master's lair, the sun burning bright outside, Dracula's children realize that they have met their match - a formidable killer who plans on picking them off one by one! As the daylight reigns and their numbers dwindle, a dark suspicion grows - could the killer be hiding in plain sight?

My Review:
Who killed Dracula? That is the question that his clan have been brought to his Paris estate to discuss and investigate. With little time to talk before the sun comes up, they agree to meet when darkness falls to start investigating. When the others are awoken to a death scream just hours later, they realise that Dracula's killer is inside the house and the sun cuts off any chance of escape. Now they must solve the mystery and outwit the killer by staying alive until dark...

I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in one night. It gets straight into the story as we follow Vincent who refuses to feed on humans or have anything to do with the clan, being forced to join the others in Paris. They are all children of Dracula, turned through the ages, with different views on what their Master was. Is it one of them who killed Dracula or is there another unknown enemy hiding in the castle? It's like one of those old murder mysteries you see on Sunday TV where the suspects all gather and point the finger at each other. Then the killer starts to take them out one by one, using their vampire weaknesses against them.

I liked seeing the vampires vulnerable and scared, trapped inside by the sun and not knowing who to trust. These are killers at the top of the food chain who are used to hunting and now THEY are the weak prey being hunted. They cannot go into the sun and are trapped in the castle with an enemy who seems to anticipate their every move. The author had me thinking about everything that was said or done, trying to find that clue as to who was the killer. It was fun! To start with I had two suspects in mind but they died quickly so that ended that! But I did pick up on a couple of clues and guessed who was responsible by just after halfway through the book. That was very satisfying!

I liked the clever ways that each vampire met their death, just like a good horror film. There was enough tension as they try to find a way to escape the castle and evade the traps set for them. I also felt as if I was rooting for a couple of the vampires to escape but hoping others would die, based on the characters that I liked. I also liked the addition of the two human hostages being held by the vampires as their story and involvement was intriguing!

There were twists and turns and the book moved along at a fast pace which I liked. There is no slowing of the action from the minute they arrive at the castle and something is always happening. It was a good thriller that non horror fans can enjoy as it is not graphic in the death scenes for the most part. I would certainly read more by this author in the future.

Chuckles 2017 E-Book Blitz

Owls are wise right? So when Mr Owl says that 2017 is time to tackle my e-book pile, I think I better listen to him! This year I really need to reduce the pile of bargain books so I'm having an ebook blitz through the entire year. It doesn't matter how many I finish or how many I DNF as long as I get them off the TBR!

Each month I'll select the ebooks that I want to read and will do a mid month update and monthly review of how I did, kind of the way I do my monthly round ups at the moment. If I can fit in extra I'll add them to the list as I go along. If you are also tackling ebooks feel free to share your progress on these posts! As we stand, my current 'I own them all' tbr is 917.

The Chosen Ones:
1 Justin Sloan-Teddy Bears and the Christmas Pirates
2 Robert Hodam-The Ark
3 James Hunt-Static #1
4 James Hunt-Static #2
5 Hugo Navikov-Spinosaurus
6 Jason McPherson-Dead Ascent
7 AR Shaw-The China Pandemic
8 Sam Sisavath-Purge of Babylon
9 Nathan Jones-Fuel
10 Devon C Ford-Survival
11 Joelle Charbonneau-The Testing Guide
12 Lesley Jepson-The Secret
13 Robert J Crane-Called
14 Stephen Knight-Preparing for the dead
15 Stephen Knight-Waiting for the dead
16 Stephen Knight-Fighting the dead
17 Jasmine Walt-Burned by magic
18 Caethes Faron-Magic Born
19 Tricia Owens-Descended from dragons
20 Ella Summers-Magic Edge
21 Rachel Rawlings-The Morrigna
22 Ben Reeder-Exodus
23 JR Rain-The dead detective
24 LG Estrella-Unconventional heroes
25 Alexandra Engellmann-Sky Ghosts
26 Viktor Zarkov-Megatooth
27 Boyd Craven III-Agony of the World
28 George RR Martin-Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
29 Eldritch Black-Night of the Christmas Letter Getters
30 Morgan Nyberg-The Fixer
31 Robert Brown-The last blade of grass
32 Andrew Cunningham-Eden Rising
33 David Nelson-The Journey
34 Andrew Baze-The Road Home
35 Albert Yates-The Dead Rising

Yes 35 looks like a lot but most are under 200 pages, some under 100 and I doubt I will finish every book so DNFs will be there! I'm hopeful of getting through them all in a month. In some cases I grabbed a few in the series at the same time and added them to Goodreads so if I choose not to continue with a series I start here, I can delete the sequels from Goodreads as well, further reducing the tbr. That's the plan anyway!

Chuckles Retro Reads #1: 'Salems Lot by Stephen King

Something strange is going on in Jerusalem's Lot ... but no one dares to talk about it. By day, 'Salem's Lot is a typical modest New England town; but when the sun goes down, evil roams the earth. The devilishly sweet insistent laughter of a child can be heard echoing through the fields, and the presence of silent looming spirits can be felt lurking right outside your window. Stephen King brings his gruesome imagination to life in this tale of spine tingling horror.

My Review:
'Salem's Lot is a small town with a dark secret. Ben has returned to the scene of his childhood trauma and decides to seek out the evil vampire and his human servant and destroy them. But who will help and who will hinder him? Can he really defeat the vampire and free the town?

This is one of Stephen King's best and it makes us confront all our fears about things that go bump in the night. It is dark and creepy, with menace hanging over the plot like a creepy mist. When I saw the film as a kid I had nightmares every time I heard a noise at the window, thinking about vampire nails scratching on the glass. I still get jumpy about noises outside which is why I sleep with earplugs! I've yet to watch the remake featuring Rob Lowe and I'm not sure if I'll get round to it when I like the original version so much. This book is about building up the tension as Ben decides on how to deal with the vampire rather than a blood and gore novel, and how the people in the town react to what is going on.

Mr Barlow was a scary ass vampire whose Nosferatu type appearance would frighten anyone to death. The thought of finding the courage to go into that house to kill that monster would really empty your bladder. His human servant was suitably creepy and the town itself seemed to be held in their spell with nobody wanting to do anything about the evil that was there until Ben comes along to rock the boat. It doesn't make me want to rush to live in a small town like this! I haven't read the book in a while but I do remember that I liked the short chapters. The story had you thinking 'I'll just read another chapter, it's only a few pages' and before you know it you've finished the book. I like it when I get books like that which I can get thnrough quickly and which hold my attention.

If you want to get your vampire adventures off to a good start with no sign of romantic vampires, then this is a good choice. I look forward to reading this again when I have reduced my tbrs.

Vampire Week!

Welcome to Vampire week at The Book Cave! This week (and maybe an extra couple of days as this topic is so big!) I'll be showcasing all things vampire-sharing reviews of great vampire reads, talking about vampires in film and TV, discussing book recommendations, vampire characters, covers for vampire books, and more!

What is it about vampires that so many of us love so much? For me I love how deadly they are, the range of abilities they have-mind control, strength, invisibility, shapeshifting, immortality, depending on each author. I like that they are good or evil but always monsters. I've just always found them fascinating! I particularly enjoy vampires in a horror, dystopian or urban fantasy setting. I tend to avoid YA vampires because of instaluv, or too much paranormal romance.

Would I want to be one? I like the idea of the immortality which would give me a lot longer to tackle  my expanding tbr, but I don't like the idea of trying to go out and bite people and drink blood to survive. What if you stumble across a Buffy wannabe, huh? I don't like being outside in the dark!!! And I love pizza too much...If I was one, I'd want to be able to turn into a bat as that is just kind of cool...

What do you like about vampires? What scares you? Would you want to be one? What abilities do you like and dislike in your vampires? Do you like good or sparkly vampires or just evil ones? What genres do you most enjoy your vampires in?

Chuckles Resolves...The Year Ahead and other Fun Stuff!

It's 2017 and the start of another year full of books and TV and films! Well I hope so anyway!

How did Chuckles spend the end of the year? ZOMBIES! No surprises there! I had watched season one and the first part of season 2 when it was on TV weekly but the last one I saw was episode 9 and for some reason I never got back to it. Last night I decided to get out the dvd box set and skim through all the episodes of season two I had watched to remind me of who everyone was and what had happened. It was fun to watch it and remember how much I love Dale and Daryl, and how much I hate Andrea and Shane! Tonight I plan to read a couple of short ebooks and finish season 2 so it gets me off to a good start for 2017! I really want to get caught up with my zombies early this year.

Next up, the resolutions for the year!

FILMS/TV:
1) Catch up on series I started watching but am behind on

And just for fun I am going to gloat again over my newest Jon Snow Game of Thrones T shirts! Those who saw my Merry Christmas post saw the awesome T Shirt which came in the post on Christmas Eve. For those who missed it, here it is again!

Well, I got another one in the post yesterday which is totally awesome and I love it! My T Shirt is white but I couldn't find an image except for the grey one.

Now I just need a Hodor T Shirt and I'll be happy! Happy New Year from The Book Cave!
