The Dog Days Of Summer

The dog kind of sums up how I feel each day, except that as well as tired, I'm a bit grumpy. I've been staying indoors due to this bout of hay fever (which took me by surprise), other than when I have to fill the bird feeder. We have a tribe of sparrows, a few blue tits and dunnocks who like visiting the front garden each day. It has been really relaxing to just watch them have a bath or get their food, and sit singing on the fences! I went out a few days ago to fill the feeder and brushed against some weeds-now I have a rash and two big insect bites that all itch like mad!!! I've tried to identify the bites but they all look the same in online photos. I'll just need to keep it clean, use cold compresses and hope it goes away soon. Grr, I really didn't need another stupid medical thing happening!

Thankfully the pollen levels are down and I'm getting a lot of stuff done in the house. I've been sorting through piles of documents from my uncle's house, working out all the companies he was dealing with for utilities, insurance, mail order catalogues, and checking each web site for contact details ready for my dad to make the phone calls to cancel things. With the virus still rampant, call centres here have fewer people to answer phones and it's taking ages to do each call. It is so time consuming plus we are still searching his house in case we missed anything. My uncle was part of the group who went to The Falkland Islands right after the war in 1982 to rebuild the damaged infrastructure and it has been great to look at his old photos from there-the hordes of penguins, the war memorials, him and his friends. The photography itself is poor but it was about 1984 so I can't expect better!

I'm still trying to sort through files on the computer to start deleting stuff I don't want or need any more and this is turning into a job that could take months. Ugh. I also had to delete a pile of stuff from my blog as it was loading really slowly and it was time to cut back additions like blog awards, Goodreads widgets, gifs that I don't need. I hope to see an improvement when I go back on as it was getting really annoying. I've been really busy with all this stuff so I didn't finish any of the posts I was working all weekend on but hey, maybe tomorrow! I've been saying that since Sunday...

We got another food delivery this week and it is so great to be free of the hassle of having to go to the supermarket to get everything. We're going to stick with the deliveries even when things return to some kind of normal. I've been enjoying trying new meals and products each time I shop and rediscovering old favourites like Hunter's Chicken. I also ordered some retro sweets from Amazon as I'm in the mood for sherbert! Double Dips and Love Hearts dips have been a tasty treat for sure!

Hope everyone is staying safe.

  1. So I want to snuggle with that doggy! Sounds like you've been really busy but I'm glad you checked in. I've been thinking a lot about you and your dad. Those pictures sound like quite the find and I bet the one with the penguin horde is adorable.

We've been chilling (or I should say sweating to death as we've had unseasonable highs the past few days). I've been getting quite a lot of reading done but they're mainly thrillers and I get through them pretty fast.

Thanks for the recommendation of My Hero Theo. Cass featured it on CWW today :) I also already pre-ordered. Stay safe!

    1. Cute isn't it! It's been so hectic this week that I always seem to have twelve things I need to get done and little time to do it. I hope once the legal stuff is over with, we can have a rest. I really need a holiday but sadly we can't have one! Hot weather always makes me sluggish too but I need to keep the windows shut because of the stupid hayfever!

I thought that book might interest you! I might grab a copy myself as Theo looks so adorable!

  2. I think I’m going to stick with grocery deliveries too. They’re safer and less time-consuming than going to the store. I don’t like the substitutions they give us though. They sent sweet peppers instead of spicy peppers. I’d never tried sweet peppers before, and they were really gross. I need my spicy stuff!

    1. Yes it's so much less stress isn't it? I hate the whole set up of going to supermarkets and having to be in a crowd of people and a big queue! Getting it to the door is so much easier. I tend to only allow subs on general things like meat, bread, biscuits-stuff that doesn't matter...I hate subs that just don't work out! Sending Creme Soda instead of Pepsi...UGH! I can imagine that the peppers certainly didn't work out for you!!!

  3. The photos sound fascinating. I have a few boxes of photos from my grandfather's time in Korea and the other grandfather's time in Japan (though both were much earlier then the 80s - more like 50s and 40s) and I really enjoy looking through them. Seems like you have a ton of projects going! And sorry to hear about the bug bites. Can you get cortisone cream there? I'm highly allergic to just about anything that bites and that has been a lifesaver for me and honestly I haven't found it that much less effective then the steroid creams that doctors usually prescribe.

    1. Ooh, those photos of your grandfather sound really interesting! I love looking at photos of places and anything military related. I'd love to trace the war records of the family but I hear it can be expensive.

Turns out I've got cellulitus from the bites which explains why none of the cremes, even the cortisone, worked. I'm on more antibiotics which I hope clears it up. Bloody insects!

    1. It feels like a never ending task right now but we'll get there. Between the pollen and the horse flies, I'm under house arrest at the moment! Go get those pollen bomb producers Sherry!

  5. I need to sort through old pictures too. It was a project I had planned on doing once we got our lockdown orders but then we lost Fonzi and so much of it is dog pictures. I really didn't want o get caught up in that spiral.

I go to the grocery store once a week but it's very quiet and we started our co-op farm shares bi weekly so it's been nice to get the fresh produce.

    1. It can be really tough sorting through the photos can't it. Whether it is family or beloved pets, it hurts. I still have trouble looking at photos of my mum six years on. I think it's easier with my uncle because it still doesn't feel real yet. I guess that'll change.

  6. Glad to hear that the delivery service is working out so well. I bet more people are going to be using that from now...

    1. I think supermarkets who had established delivery service before the pandemic will be doing well. Those who didn't might really be getting left behind! It's definitely a lot less hassle to get stuff delivered.
