Top Ten Tuesday-Books I'm Putting Off Reading

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

Yes there are books I'm putting off reading. With just over 1000 books in my home waiting to be read, it is inevitable! Sometimes it can be about book length, not wanting a beloved series to end or just not being in the mood for reading it or the genre.

1) Richard Laymon-Amara
When the author died suddenly, I knew that there were only a couple  of his books I hadn't read-Amara and Night in the Lonesome October, and I haven't  been able to bring myself to read them as there will never be any more. Last October a reading slump stopped me reading them so I'm going to try and read them this year for Spooky Booky month!

2) John Marsden-The Tomorrow series
I LOVED the first two books in this series and haven't read the rest despite really wanting to! I was sort of saving them for the perfect time or a rainy day or something but I seem to keep putting them off for no good reason. I am planning to read them next year for my series catchup! Finally!

3) Stephen King/Joe Hill-various
I was given a few of these free or picked up really cheap. I loved King's early work and Hill's Heart Shaped Box, but the rest of their recent work has been more miss than hit. I still have to read The Fireman, Revival, 11/22/63, Under The Dome, The Mist and Full Dark No Stars. I'm just not motivated to do it and a few are so big! Read or delete....good question.

4) Darrell Maloney-various
I've read the first books in three of his series-Alone, Countdown to Armageddon and Final Dawn and LOVED them! CTA is complete, as are two other spin offs from the main series Red and Ranger, and the newer Yellowstone and Pandemic series continue. I want to wait until the series are completed before binge reading them but I'm impatient to start!

5) Robert Boren-Bug Out
I've read the original Bug Out series and loved it. The Texas spin off is complete so I can start it anytime but the California version is still going and a New York one has begun. I was going to wait until they were both completed but I really do want to get on with them. I'm going to put them down for next year which will need to be the year of the series catch up...

6) The 2010 books
In 2010/2011 I bought and read first books in lots of urban fantasy series. If I liked it, I bought the whole series but have sat unread since! My UF enjoyment waned due to too many going PNR with all sex no plot so I neglected these older books by Jaye Well, Kelly Meding, DD Barant, MLN Hanover, Christina Henry etc. I'm rectifying that now!

7) The audio cds
I have a small collection- 7x Harry Potter, 2x ASOI&F, 2x Philippa Gregory, Hunger Games trilogy, IT, Morningstar trilogy, 1st Morganville. I can never sit still long enough to listen to them, I have no work commute or much alone time so it has been difficult! I really do want to get them listened to and clear them off the TBR but I have no idea when!

8) Long Series Catchups
The sheer size of some series are intimidating. I have Dirk Patton's 19 book apocalypse, Jennifer Estep's 20 odd book Elemental Assassin, 13-16 in each Robert Boren and most Darrell Maloney series, the Tudor and Plantagenet series from Philippa Gregory and Jean Plaidy needs read and properly reviewed. A lot of work ahead!

9) Rob Thurman
To be honest, I've been put off by her attitude to fans, blaming Cal fans for not buying her other books and not making them a success. I did try the other books and disliked them so I only buy the Cal books. So her troubles are my fault it seems! The way she talks to her fans is pretty disgusting and makes me keep pushing the Cal books to one side.

10) Non Fiction
It always takes me longer to read non fiction and I have a ton of it-UK and US political memoirs, disasters, mountain expedition, scandals, true crime, royal biographies, Tudor and other historical non fiction, wars...a lot! Each of these will take days to read compared to the shorter fiction I can get through so quickly, so I put them off a bit!

  1. So I would like to read "Night in the Lonesome October" as well. I'd say read 11/22/63 and The Revival but skip Under the Dome. I loved that book - up until the last 30 pages and the ending was weak and horrible and I really hated that I spent so much time on it. I can't speak to "The Fireman" but I own it as well. However, it was sitting on the coffee table the day Booker T and Cass had their infamous fight so it has blood spots on it. Maybe I need a replacement copy.

    1. In the end I decided not to bother with the Stephen King books at all except The Mist and gave them to my uncle! He'll donate them to the library of the men's club he's a member of. I am keeping The Fireman for the moment but I'm still in two minds about it! I can imagine that your copy of the book brings you mixed memories.

  2. I eventually want to read all of Stephen King’s books, but there are a few that I’m not overly excited about. I’ll get to them someday. Maybe they’ll be awesome.

    1. I sort of fell out of love with his later work when I would be enjoying the book and he threw in a weird ending...like Cell! I'm just not keen to commit to reading huge books and getting poor endings!

  3. I have a few sequels that I'm putting off because I loved the first so much and I don't want to be disappointed.

    1. Next year is going to be all about catching up on book series for sure! I might have that as my only challenge.

  4. I struggle with reading long series, too. And hearing that about Rob Thurman makes me not want to keep reading her Cal series...although I do love those brothers! :)

    1. I admit that if I had heard about her attitude before buying the books, I'd have never bought them but I already had most of the books when I heard about her!

  5. I have never been compelled to read a Stephen King book, because (1) his movies were so scary, the book are probably terrifying, and (2) they are long.

    1. In recent years there hasn't been anything scary or horror about the KIng books I tried. One sounded like horror and ended up a coming of age melodrama! His early stuff had horror and tension though.

  6. That's some list. I often put off reading books in a series I really enjoy just so it doesn't have to end. LOL

    1. Yeah sometimes you can't face the end of a great series or the last book by a favourite author!

  7. I have so many series that I've put off... I often want to read a book, then it gets hyped to the max and then I put off reading it despite wanting to read it and eventually it falls off my radar... :(

  8. I read so little non fiction now, but I used to read a lot more. I wish I made more time for it sometimes.

    1. I keep telling myself that when I deal with all my fiction books I'll make more time for non fiction but whether that will happen is open to question! I do read a lot of mountain expedition and political NF but the rest falls by the wayside!

  9. I can relate to a lot of these Chuckles. I have a hard time enjoying an author's work sometimes after they have been terrible to their readers online. I have quite a few King books ready to go but...they are just so long! I tend to save a book or two from my favorite readers for those times that I need a great read so I can really understand hesitating to read that last book by an author that is gone. Great list!

    1. Those big books can be scary because you know they might take a week or more to get through so I'm always tempted by the 200 page horrors that I can read in a night! Authors behaving badly can be off-putting but since I had the books before I knew what she was like, I will end up reading them. Just not top of the list though!

    1. The Jaye Wells Sabina Kane series was really good so that was a win as was the Carrie Vaughn werewolf series and the Morganville Vampires. Now I have to focus on getting these other UF series completed before the end of the year! I know the first books are good so I just need to hope it keeps up the standard!

  11. King's Revival is dark but I loved it! I'm like you. I have trouble reading an author if they've been a dick. I can't ever read Anne Rice again.

    1. I've heard bad things about Anne Rice setting her fans on reviewers if they don't love her books. Thankfully I never liked her books which I read long before I found blogging and Goodreads! I certainly wouldn't read her books now!

  12. I LOVED both The Fireman and Under The Dome. They are very long though... phew!
