Book Review: Bad Vision by Dave Jeffery

Ray Tonks has the power to see disasters as they happen. But he cannot do anything to stop them. Then comes the worst vision yet. Ray sees terrible future images, that defy logic, ghastly twisted shapes of depravity and torture. Now Ray must fathom if this latest vision is his first real chance to avert a dark and hideous catastrophe or a sign that his fragile mind has finally given in to madness.

Murder can change your mind.

My Review:

***I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest  review***

A childhood accident which saw Ray Tonks header a rock in a moment of madness playing football, has left him suffering from pre-cognition, getting visions of impending disasters that he is helpless to stop. Fearful of being made out to be mad if he shares his secret, Ray suffers in silence as he is plagued with guilt over being unable to stop deadly earthquakes and terrorist attacks, unable to tell his wife and friends. Now his visions have become more sinister with mutilations and cruxifictions by demon like creatures with stitched skin and he is truly scared about what is coming and what his visions mean. Can he do anything to stop this before his mind gives out? And is this connected to a series of brutal murders in the papers with missing body parts?

His wife Denise is distracted, trying to cover up the end of her guilty affair with a man who is not yet ready to let go and wants to continue seeing her at all costs. Ray's friend and colleague Eloise is still trying to get over the death of her adoptive parents who brought stability to her once chaotic upbringing, and working hard is all she can do to deal with it. Her colleague Mike is trying to hide his true feelings for her and has a guilty secret about a secret hobby that others might not understand, as he continues to struggle with the effects of childhood bullying. And then there is Brendan the creepy janitor who is always lurking there, watching and waiting for his chance  to get closer to Eloise...

I first read this as a shorter story a good few years back and very much enjoyed it and I was so pleased to see it being made into a longer story. I can certainly say that this version was also really enjoyable to read and it really works great in this longer format. The author has a great knack for getting the story going and investing the reader in the characters, regardless of the story length, and this is what keeps the reader wanting to find out what is happening next. It is not full on gory action horror, more to the psychological side with gory visions but it never gets dull or boring. It kept me interested throughout, and the story gets more gripping as it progresses.

A lot of that is down to the characters. I really felt bad for Ray, having these dreadful and painful visions of death and disaster that he can't talk about, followed by the guilt of all the deaths, nightmares and blackouts which have him questioning his own sanity. The strain of keeping it together at work and at home is starting to get to him and he just can't talk to anyone about it. The strain between him and Denise is also showing but she has her own problems trying to end her affair with Peter and deal with her guilt about it. Dealing with her husband and his problems is not really top of her priority list.

I liked Eloise, who has turned her difficult early life around to have a successful career, but sometimes struggles with her own demons when times get tough. Mike was a great character, the quiet little boy who was bullied relentlessly at school and still suffers from a confidence crisis, hiding behind an image of a foul mouthed idiot. They are aware that something isn't right with Ray but have problems of their own to deal with. Brendan is a seriously creepy man who enjoyed a voyeur life with his wife. However with Judith's death, he is now very much alone and feeling the need for a different kind of adventure with leads to his fixation with Eloise. Going from voyeur to participant is a bold move but Brendan is getting ready to embrace that change.

The story switches between what is happening with Ray, Denise, Eloise, Mike and creepy Brendan who has become fixated with Eloise. I liked the way the author did this, as the reader gets the chance to see what each character was feeling and doing. It certainly aids the character development through the story. This keeps the story moving forward nicely and I felt that I was just anticipating how all of these sub plots were going to join up with what was happening to Ray. Without spoiling anything for those planning to read the book, I found the ending not just satisfying, but quite unexpected, in a good way. It says a lot about the writing skills of an author when you don't see things coming, especially in a horror book.

If you like a character driven psychological horror/thriller, then I recommend this one. The book is due for release in October 2018.

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

Another week has gone by and I'm grumpy about the heatwave coming back. I'm just glad that I pretty much got my bedroom straightened before things got too warm again. Ugh, I'll be glad for autumn! The rest of the work in the house in on hold for a bit due to the weather and my dad feeling a bit off colour. He's getting a few tests done but the doctor thinks it is a slight issue with blood sugar but nothing to worry about. So he is banned from all work on my orders!

I haven't got a great amount of reading done and I've had to readjust my plans for the month. I've bumped Wolf by Wolf to next month as I haven't tried the author before and August is my new to me Authorfest. That means I need to squeeze in a few books by authors I have already read before the end of the month as I might need these books for some upcoming TTT lists I'm working on. More about the books I need to read later in this post. I did download a few more that sounded interesting, as a reward for having a new bookcase! *ahem*

I started a new way of doing Around The Blogs which will allow me to showcase a few more blog posts each week. Basically, instead of spending Sunday hunting for things to put on the post and running out of time, I'll be adding stuff to the post each day of the week as I visit your blogs. It's working out much better!

Change of plan! I've got my August Authorfest next month where I plan to read completely new-to-me authors so I've bumped Wolf by Wolf until then. I need to squeeze in a few books at the end of this month by authors I have tried, so I can use them in upcoming TTT lists next month! These are what I hope to squeeze in, in the next few days.

Books From The Backlog-The Shuddering

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf.  You might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. Go to Carole's blog and add your blog post link in to join in the fun! Hosted by Carole at https://carolesrandomlife.blogspot.co.uk/

This seems like a fun feature and I have been planning to take part since Carole launched this so at last, here we go! I have a TON of unread books to choose from in various genres and I'm looking forward to sharing some of them with everybody.

Ryan Adler and his twin sister, Jane, spent their happiest childhood days at their parents' mountain Colorado cabin - until divorce tore their family apart. Now, with the house about to be sold, the Adler twins gather with their closest friends for one last snowboarding-filled holiday. While commitment-phobic Ryan gazes longingly at Lauren, wondering if his playboy days are over, Jane's hopes of reconciling with her old boyfriend evaporate when he brings along his new fiancée.

As drama builds among the friends, something lurks in the forest, watching the cabin, growing ever bolder as the snow falls - and hunger rises. After a blizzard leaves the group stranded, the true test of their love and loyalty begins as the hideous creatures outside close in, one bloody attack at a time. Now Ryan, Jane, and their friends must fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Or else surrender to unspeakable deaths in the darkened woods.

This one was added to my tbr in December 2016. I think I've avoided reading it because there is the possibility of a lot of relationship angst before we get to the horror side of things and that could slow it down too much. I do want to find out what is in the woods though so I will be reading this at some point.

Book Review: Titanoboa by PK Hawkins

Professor Hank Newstead has been making expeditions to the Amazon River for years. They've become routine to him. But this time, the expedition is going to be anything but normal.

Hank, along with a hardened river boat captain, his much younger girlfriend, and his main professional rival, are in the Amazon purely to study frogs. All their plans vanish quickly, however, when they are attacked by a Titanoboa, an enormous prehistoric snake that should be millions of years in its grave. As their crew dwindles from a series of terrifying attacks, they discover a secret: a long lost colleague of the professor has taken up residence on an island in the deepest parts of the jungle. And if Hank and the others can't find and stop her, then the Titanoboa will not be the only extinct monster unleashed back into the world.

My Review:
Dr Hank Newstead is taking a few of his students on an Amazon expedition to a site looking for the disappearing tree frogs that he studies. He already has fears about being forced into retirement by an eager young rival and whether his new relationship is doomed by the time they set sail and he wonders if he is getting too old for field work just as Erin craves the opportunity to take part in it. However, it doesn't take long for the Captain-Hank's friend Morgan to see something unusual in the water on his radar and they go straight into a deadly encounter with a giant snake that is meant to be long extinct. It is only the first deadly episode with extinct creatures and soon the survivors are wondering if they need to make a run for it on land to get help.

I was actually surprised to like this one as much as I did. I had concerns about the romance mentioned in the blurb in case it took away from the story but it is very much a background detail and not the focus of the story which was fine with me. It is there to gain an introduction to two of the characters more than anything. It is the same with the tension between Hank and Randy. We see it in the first few pages but it's there for character development and it isn't in any way annoying to me. Actually, despite an instant dislike of Randy in the first few pages, I soon grew to like him! I liked the characters in general, especially the gruff grumpy boat captain who doesn't like jokes about his name being Captain Morgan.

We also follow the antics of Dr Annalisa Sanderton, an intelligent scientist colleague of Hank who has an interest in extinct species. She has been sufferinMayg from a mental illness which is affecting her thought processes and has convinced herself that she must bring back these extinct species and unleash them on the Amazon to kill people. She is working in a remote, protected camp near the river and this is where Hank thinks they might find some kind of help or at least answers to what is going on. Annalisa, in her few lucid moments is horrified by her own actions but can't stop herself. I liked this twist of having the evil scientist actually being mentally ill instead of being just a bad person. It was interesting to follow what she was doing and I certainly had sympathy for her situation.

The book gets into the story straight away after a few pages introducing the characters. We meet the snake very early on and from that moment the story moves along at a good pace. For those of you who like creature feature, there are a few fun ones in this book including a shoal of giant pirhana and tree frogs that you don't want to mess with. And that is before they try to run through the Amazon to escape Titanoboa! The monster scenes  are a lot of fun to read and are as you would expect in this kind of book. It is nicely paced and something is happening all the time to keep the reader interested. It is a pretty quick read but keeps a good standard and I enjoyed the way that the story unfolded.

If you like this b movie creature feature where people get eaten, then why not try this one for a fun horror read!

Read  May 2018.

Can't Wait Wednesday-Madness

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at http://www.wishfulendings.com/ to spotlight and discuss books we're excited about but haven't read, which may not even be released yet.

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

FACT: There's a real-life parasite that rewires mammals brains for extreme aggressive behavior…

Over half of all the world's mammals are already infected, but aren't symptomatic because the parasite remains dormant in most hosts. Like a ticking bomb, this puppet master is patiently waiting for the right time to set off its hosts against the world. That time is now!

A canceled flight due to a volcanic eruption and a violent animal attack at their port, almost cause Ted and TJ to miss their transatlantic cruise and a needed escape from their busy lives in the US. But there will be no peace or tranquility on this cruise as something is very wrong: animals have started to attack for no apparent reason. It will take Ted and TJ’s unique skills to not only survive their cruise, but to understand an apocalypse of madness which appears to have struck the whole world.

With mammals outnumbering humans 10,000 to 1, is this the end?

I had mixed feelings about the last book I read by the author but that was based on a couple of plot threads rather than the actual writing so I'm happy to give this one a try. It sounds like it could be bloody! It came out in May so I'll be looking out for it.
