Game of Thrones Season Eight Episode 6

The post is dark and full of spoilers for season eight so only read on if you have watched the whole season.

6) The Iron Throne
A heavy hearted Tyrion looks at the damage to the city and makes his way to the Red Keep. Jon and Davos find Grey Worm executing Lannister prisoners on Dany's orders and try to stop him. Tyrion finds the dead bodies of his brother and sister and weeps. Dany tells her celebrating troops that there is a promotion for Grey Worm and announces that she intends to free every slave in the world by fighting their rulers, which alarms Tyrion, Jon and Arya. Dany tells Tyrion that she knows he freed Jaime. He admits it, quits as her Hand and is arrested. Arya warns Jon what Dany is, that Sansa will not bend the knee to Dany and Jon's royal blood will always be a threat to Dany's rule. Jon visits Tyrion who tries to persuade him to betray Dany, pointing out that his sisters are in danger from her rule. Jon begs Dany to see reason and forgive Tyrion but her passionate speech about the future convinces him that Tyrion is right and he kills her. A devastated Drogon spares Jon but destroys the Iron Throne and flies away with her body.

Tyrion is taken to his trial but Sansa comments that Jon should be there and that the northmen will not allow Grey Worm to harm him. Arya threatens Yara when she says that she wants Jon to die for betraying his Queen. Davos begs Grey Worm to take a land settlement and forget more war and death as everyone has been through too much. Tyrion points out that a new King or Queen needs to be chosen by the Lords and Ladies. Sansa cuts off Edmure's awkward attempt at offering to be King and Sam is laughed at for wondering if the people should have a say as well. Tyrion is not interested in being King but sets out a case for choosing Bran, who agrees to serve if chosen and one by one everyone consents except Sansa. Sansa declares that the North will retain their freedom and Bran agrees to grant her request. Bran chooses Tyrion as his Hand. It is Tyrion who tells Jon that his punishment is to join the Night's Watch again as his enemies refuse to pardon him. The Unsullied and Dothraki leave, Arya decides to explore the uncharted worlds and Jon goes North. Brienne updates Jaime's history in the book with all the good deeds he did before he died. Tyrion sits on a lively Small Council with Sam, Brienne, Bronn and Davos while Sansa is crowned Queen in the North. At Castle Black, Tormund, Ghost and the wildlings take Jon beyond the Wall to a new life.

Interesting thoughts...
-I kept expecting a showdown between Jon and Grey Worm to turn bloody
-Hot Pie should have served direwolf bread to the Small Council or the big meeting!
-Strange to get no closure on the imprisoned Ellaria
-Why was Jon not there to hear his punishment beside Tyrion?
-Bronn as Master of Coin? Deary me!

Amusing moments...
-Arya threatening Yara
-Edmure wanting to be King
-'I'll ask my horse!' Poor Sam is way ahead of his time!
-The new Small Council

Emotional...
-Tyrion's walk of grief and tears for his dead family
-Drogon's grief for Dany
-Brienne listing Jaime's good deeds
-Jon is reunited with Ghost

Great moments...
-Tyrion quits as Dany's Hand
-Tyrion and Jon talking treason
-The destruction of the Iron Throne
-Sansa's determination to bend the knee to nobody

Overall I actually enjoyed season eight especially the first three episodes before the deaths began. I loved A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and The Long Night as the best two episodes as they both had all the feels. I thought it was an emotional series and I lost count of the tears I shed, and for me the deaths were fitting. Jorah dies protecting his Queen, Edd dies for his brother, Lianna dies as fiercely as she lived, Melisandre finishes the job of destroying the dead, Theon dies saving his Stark family, Varys dies in defence of the realm from a tyrant and Jaime dies with the woman he loves.

There were also the moments of humour and the renewing of old alliances like Arya and The Hound, Tormund and Jon etc. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was a brilliant episode, seeing all our favourites coming to Winterfell and renewing friendships and rivalries. I see a lot of complaints about Dany's 'sudden' madness but I don't agree. You can see her ruthlessness with enemies from season one when Viserys threatens her baby, through the crucifying of the masters, killing her loyal supporter in Mereen, the murder of the Tarly's, the way she turned on Varys at the start of season seven. Jorah was the only one keeping her in check at times so with her losing him, blaming Tyrion for his mistakes, not trusting Varys and Missandei's murder, it was logical that her next move was taking the city at any cost so she could win. I think she was angry that the people didn't love her instantly the way her released slaves did but of course the people of Westeros remembered the bloody reign of her father so who can blame them!

The niggles? OK why were the final two seasons not ten episodes long as the others were? We could have seen Edmure being released from the Frey dungeons and getting back to ruling two small empires, the fate of Ellaria and her daughter, more on Theon's journey to rescue Yara and her captivity, Yara taking back the Iron Islands, more Brienne and Pod at Winterfell, more Varys and Tyrion trying to stop Dany, bringing back Hot Pie for a quick appearance somewhere as Jon and Davos ride for King's Landing, maybe seeing the reaction from those who received the letters of treason from Varys, Sam's family reappear and his sister links up with Pod or Gendry. There are so many characters underused in the last two seasons that I love and I just wanted to see two full seasons with all these added interactions and extras. This was my only real complaint.

In the ideal world I wanted Cersei, The Night King and Euron dead, Cleganebowl, Dany to be betrayed, Sansa ruling the North, Tyrion ruling the Seven Kingdoms and Jon as King Beyond The Wall, so I pretty much got what I wanted in the end. I was ok with Bran taking the crown in the end as Tyrion gets to be Hand and run the Small Council. A lot of my favourites survived which was a relief especially Ghost! I did want to see Jaime kill Cersei but I do get why he ended up going to try and save her so at least it made sense. It just makes me long for the release of The Winds of Winter!

Did you get the ending you wanting? What did you enjoy about the series and what would you change?

  1. I didn’t hate season 8 as much as other people did, but I agree with your niggles. I wanted 10 episodes so we had more time to focus on the minor characters.

    1. Seeing Arya and The Hound on the road together one last time would've been fun!

  2. You pretty much know my thoughts already and while I understand Jaime dying with Cersei, I still don't like it. I also agree that Tyrion will pretty much run things being The Hand so that's good. Ghost and Drogon living is also a plus. I heard each episode of this season took about 15 million to make which is why it was shortened but I don't know how true that is.

    1. I was so relieved that Ghost lived through it even if he got a bit battered in the fight. I'd love a mini series spin off with Jon, Tormund, Ghost and ice spiders!

  3. This episode broke my heart...

Jon's pain at having to kill Dany... That entire scene was so beautifully done right up to Drogon melting the throne and swooping away with his mum in his claws.

I laughed like a look when Arya threatened Yara. You could tell those sitting there knew it wasn't an idle threat either! That's why Yara shut her mouth.

The closing scenes with each of the surviving Starks in their places... That was beautiful. The Starks and Tyrion reigned supreme in the end.

I was happy with it all. I'd have liked it to have felt less rushed but the ending was spot on for me.

    1. Yes Dany's final scene was one of the best. I felt for Jon and Drogon! I am really pleased that the Starks are ruling but GRRM did give it a huge hint when he originally named the final book A Time For Wolves then changed it to A Dream Of Spring!
