4) The Last of the Starks
The dead are laid out on their funeral pyres with Dany struggling to say goodbye to Jorah and Sansa putting the Stark sigil on Theon's body. Jon gives a eulogy for the dead and the fires are lit. Inside a subdued feast begins and the atmosphere lightens when Dany makes Gendry the Lord of Storm's End but that isn't enough for Arya to accept his proposal to marry him. Jaime, Brienne and Tyrion enjoy a drinking game until Tyrion's question about her virginity offends the knight and she leaves. Turmund's attempts at seduction fail and it is Jaime that Brienne sleeps with that night. Dany is concerned when Tormund praises Jon as a King worth following, and Varys observes Dany with concern. Despite his feelings for Dany, the incest issue gets in the way and Jon rejects her advances, infuriating her by deciding he wants to let Sansa and Arya in on the family secret.

The attack on King's Landing is being planned. Dany and Drogon are travelling across the water to Dragonstone with her advisors and a small force, while Jon and Davos take the troops down the Kingsroad to the capital. Sansa and Dany clash over the plan and Jon risks the fury of Dany by telling his family the truth about him. Bronn offers Tyrion the chance to beat Cersei's offer of Riverrun and Tyrion offers him Highgarden. The Hound and Arya leave together on their revenge mission. Sansa breaks her word to Jon and tells Tyrion about his real identity and he confides the secret in Varys. Varys now has serious doubts about whether Dany is the right person for the job. Jon says goodbye to Tormund who agrees to take Ghost north with him, and to Sam and the pregnant Gilly.

Dany's plans are thrown into chaos when Euron's fleet ambushes her ships and he kills Rhaegal, causing Dany to flee on Drogon. The rest of her people end up washed up on the nearby beach...but Grey Worm cannot find Missandei. It is revealed that Euron captured her and gave her to Cersei. Cersei lies to Euron that she is pregnant with his child. Varys and Tyrion beg the furious Dany not to kill everyone in the city and she agrees on a diplomatic mission to the city gates. Tyrion begs Cersei to surrender for the sake of her unborn child, but despite refusing to take the chance to kill her brother, she has no mercy for Missandei and The Mountain beheads her. Missandei's last word to Dany is dracarys and Dany intends to deliver it to the city tenfold as cold rage goes through her.

Interesting thoughts...
-Dany really doesn't like the idea of Jon's secret getting out as he has the better claim
-Why on earth did Dany not see Euron's fleet or expect the possibility of an ambush???
-At least Tormund, Ghost, Sam and Brienne are going to be safe...
-Will Euron wonder how Tyrion knew about Cersei's pregnancy and betray her?
-Have the Golden Company been bought by the new Prince of Dorne or Varys or Daario?
-Varys is treading a very dangerous line of betrayal which makes me fear for him
-Who is the new Prince of Dorne?

Amusing moments...
-Tormund getting drunk
-Pod and Tormund get dates and The Hound rejects his offer in his usual manner
-The drinking game
-Sam telling Jon how Gilly got pregnant

Emotional...
-the funeral pyre scenes broke my heart again
-poor Ghost is all beaten up after the battle
-Gendry is rejected by Arya
-The Hound and Sansa have a moment to talk about their past
-Ghost as Jon sends him north to safety
-Missandei's final moments and the reaction of Grey Worm
-Jaime abandons Brienne

Great moments...
-Fear for Gendry's life turns to relief as Dany makes him Lord of Storm's End
-Sansa tells Tyrion the truth about Jon
-The Hound and Arya reunite for a final mission
-Tyrion and Varys debating who will make the best ruler-I love their scenes
-Brienne finally gets her man!

5) The Bells
Varys begins his betrayal of Dany by writing letters to contacts to tell of Jon's claim and Martha reports that Dany won't eat the food and fears she is being watched. He attempts to get Jon to take the throne and the watching Tyrion feels he has to bring it to Dany's attention. He feels guilt as he watches Dany burn his one true friend for treason. Jon cannot give Dany his love and instead swears her loyalty but that is not enough for her and she says if she isn't loved, she'll rule by fear. Tyrion seeks a favour from Davos. The Hound and Arya arrive at King's Landing. Tyrion risks everything to set Jaime free and send him to the city, even if it means letting Cersei escape with him. Euron waits with his fleet as the people inside the city go into hiding and many flood into the city before the gates are locked.

Dany attacks the sea fleet with Drogon and rips them apart, sending Euron into the water. She then turns her attack to the huge scorpions mounted on the city wall and the defences are quickly overrun. Drogon blows open the gate from the inside, killing the rear of the Golden Company and Grey Worm leads the dothraki, Unsullied and northmen into the fight, destroying the rest of the Golden Company and entering the city. They start fighting the Lannister army who quickly start to surrender and Tyrion is relieved to hear the bells ringing. Dany continues her attack on soldiers and civilians and Jon is horrified when Grey Worm attacks the men who surrendered. Davos tries to get the civilians to go for the gate. Jaime tries to get to Cersei but is stopped by Euron, leading to a brutal fight.

Cersei watches her city burn until Qyburn finally persuades her to leave with him and The Mountain. The Hound persuades Arya to forget her revenge on Cersei and live to fight another day and they say goodbye. Jaime kills Euron but is badly injured and looks for Cersei. Cersei is confronted by The Hound who greets his brother and The Mountain ignores her command to stay at her side. Qyburn intervenes and The Mountain kills him. The Clegane brothers let Cersei leave and begin to fight. Arya struggles to find a way to safety and Jaine has an emotional reunion with Cersei. With no weapon available that can kill his brother, The Hound grabs him and they go through the wall and down to a fiery death below. Jon calls a full retreat and they exit the exit as Dany continues her destruction. Cersei and Jaime are trapped under the city when the ceilings come down on top of them. Arya is the last person to escape the ruined city.

Interesting thoughts...
-That's the gratitude Tyrion shows Varys for saving his life in season four? Nice!
-Dany refuses to take responsibility for Varys death by blaming Jon, Sansa and Tyrion for it, and hinting she'll kill anyone to stop the secret getting out
-I fear Tyrion is next for dragon death after setting Jaime free after Dany's dire warning about failing her again
-Tyrion finally has a plan work as the bells ring out for surrender. Pity Dany doesn't care...
-The Golden Company didn't appear to be worth what Cersei paid for them
-In spite of everything, Cersei does love Jaime
-Varys says that the best King is someone who doesn't want it. Could that be Bran?

Amusing moments...
-Davos knowing he won't like Tyrion's favour
-Tyrion's poor language skills 'I drink to eat the skull keeper!'

Emotional...
-The final scene between Tyrion and Varys
-Tyrion saying goodbye to Jaime
-Arya and The Hound have a final goodbye
-Cersei's reunion with Jaime
-The death of The Hound

Great moments...
-Die Euron die!
-Cleganebowl!

Comparisons with earlier seasons
-Stannis sends a letter out about Joffrey's parentage, indicating that Ned's mistake was not doing so, which led to his death. Varys seems determined to follow the example of Stannis. Who is he writing to???
-In season one Pycelle says that poison is a eunoch's weapon and it seems Varys is trying to poison Dany here
-In season one Ned offers Cersei the chance to flee which leads to Robert's murder as Tyrion makes the offer to her again and this time Missandei dies
-In season one Tyrion tells Bronn if Bronn is given a contract to kill him, he will improve it and Bronn comes to Winterfell to see what that offer is
-In season one we discover a Lannister killed a Targaryen to put a Baratheon on the throne. (Jaime, The Mad King and Robert) If Tyrion kills Dany will history repeat itself?

  1. I liked these two episodes. I know a lot of people are furious about the 'personality change' in Dany but I'm just mystified as to how people haven't seen the signs all along... She's always been utterly ruthless and needed people to reign her in. With that gone? Snap.

My only complaint is that in past seasons the events in these episodes would have been drawn out more. You'd have more detail and story telling. I feel like this season, though great, has been like watching a highlights show... An abridged version rather than the full shebang.

    1. I agree about the spacing. Seeing Jon and Davos come down the King's Road and be joined by other Houses would have been nice, seeing who got Varys' letters, more of those great partnership moments like Brienne and Pod...all the things that made the first 6 seasons so good. As much as I enjoyed the episodes, I wanted more of them like the other series.

The signs were there with Dany since season one when Viserys died. Her actions in Qarth, cricifying the masters, killing her devoted supporter for taking a life without her permission...you see how unbending she can be. I always suspected she'd go Mad Queen.

  2. Oh my gosh, the funeral pyre scenes were so powerful. And poor Gendry!
