Book Review: Gated by Matt Drabble

British couple Michael and Emily Torrence lived perfect lives. He was a writer of horror fiction getting paid for his hobby, and Emily was immersed in her life as a teacher. Their world was complete when Emily became pregnant, because their child would make them a family. Their dreams, however, were shattered one wet winter night by a car mounting a pavement out of the darkness.

To overcome their loss, they pick up and move to Eden Gardens, a U.S. gated community that offers "Heaven on Earth and Twice as Nice." The people are warm and friendly and welcome them with open arms. The town is a beautiful throwback to a bygone age, where the sun always shines and the sky's always blue.

As they settle into their new, perfect lives, the circle is complete when Emily falls pregnant again. The town is perfect, the weather is perfect, and their lives are perfect. But are the stares from their neighbours a little too intense, is the town a little too interested in their happy news, and is Eden all that it seems?

They are about to find out that paradise comes at a cost, and when you sign a lease, you should always check the fine print.

My Review:
The first thing I noticed about this book was the constant references to Stephen King-The Shining. Character names are taken from the story plus the book and film are mentioned several times in the opening part of this book. I took that to be a bad sign as it is not a book that I enjoyed. However, references to a book/film I didn't like would not affect me continuing to read, and of course, does not change my overall rating of this book as that would be seriously petty.

So why didn't I like this one? One reason, pure and simple-far too slow for me. It seemed to take ages to get into the main point of the story. We had the tragic family history, the long car journey, the arrival, the settling in at their new home and meeting the new people. I just didn't feel that we were getting to the 'gated' part of things anytime soon. After a quarter of the book, nothing of any note had happened and I just started to lose interest.

The interlude I read reminded me of another Stephen King book-IT. That is my favourite ever book on the planet and I love it. In that book, the interludes are the grubby history of Derry and it works so well in showing the evil in the town in the past, while you are with the characters battling it in two different periods of time. It helped to blend the whole book together. In this book, I didn't feel that it worked. I don't know if there was more than one interlude but the one I read was plonked right in the middle of the scene setting introduction to this new home and it didn't really add anything to the story. I feel it was something else that just slowed things down.

The book just didn't work for me. There was nothing wrong with the writing or any aspect of the author's work-it was just too slow for my personal tastes. I feel that this reminded me in a way of Stephen King fan fiction and I don't mean that in a nasty way. I don't find anything wrong with fan fiction or writing books that are a sort of salute to a favourite author or book. It just wasn't what I was expecting or looking for after reading previous work by the author and it wasn't really my kind of thing.

Plenty of people with more patience than me will probably enjoy this book and be amused by the Stephen King references, so don't let me put you off if you planned to read this. I have enjoyed other work by this author and he is a good storyteller.

Book Review: The Demon's Deadline by Tori Centanni (Demon's Assistant #1)

Some teenagers deliver pizza, some deliver newspapers. My part-time job? I deliver mysterious envelopes for a demon. I don't even get tips.

It seemed like a good deal at the time. I almost died in a car accident, and Azmos saved me... gave me a second chance. At first, it wasn't so bad. I got to live, go to high school, hang out with my boyfriend Cam. He's too cute for his own good, but he's getting tired of all this demon stuff. I hate lying to my best friend Melissa and my dad, who's still not over my mom's death. Neither am I.

But now, this gig is getting dangerous, and it's not like I can quit. Even if I could, then what? I've seen things I can't unsee. I just hope I can figure out how to navigate the darkness before I do something I can't undo.

It's time I face my own demons.

My Review:
Nicki survived the car crash which killed her mother thanks to the intervention of a demon called Azmos. Now she works for him, delivering letters from him to others who did a deal with him, and when people start reacting badly to it, Nicki realises that she has been delivering their death notices.

Azmos does deals that can extend your life by ten years after your fated death but one client is refusing to accept that her time is up, and she is determined to force Azmos to let her live in Nicki's place. When Azmos goes missing, Nicki knows she has to save him if she has any chance of saving herself.

I quite liked this. When you read books about people doing deals with demons, the demons are generally evil and the people are selling their souls. I liked the fact that this plot was a totally different take on the deals of humans and demons. Azmos offers people a chance to survive their deaths, giving them an extra ten years to live. This allows parents to see their kids grow up, families to spend extra time together-it is a kindness, but the parting after the ten year contract ends can be difficult. Azmos is a nice demon who is trying to help people, not hurt them.

I liked Nicki as an MC. She is a normal girl with friends and a boyfriend, but she has to be ready to deliver these letters with little notice. It is only when she has a run in with someone who attacks her that she realises what the letters are, and starts thinking about what the terms of her contract are, something Azmos does not want to discuss with her. She also struggles with the idea of what to do if she can't work for Azmos any more as she feels quite useless in other aspects of her life, something that most readers can relate to in some way. I also liked the fact that her boyfriend Cam knows about her job and tries to support her as much as possible, even though he is worried for her. Nicki has no superpowers so when Azmos is in trouble, she has to rely on her own brain to find a way to save him.

This book has a few surprises up its sleeve that you don't discover until the end ie the nature of Nicki's contract and I found the outcome to be very satisfying and intriguing. It is not action packed but it is well enough written not to feel slow or boring, and liking the characters made it an enjoyable read.

Would I read more in the series? Yes I think I probably would as I want to see what else Nicki gets up to. I think this series has a lot of potential.

Stacking the Shelves #104

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! Click on the link under the book to find its page on Goodreads or Smashwords.

Please note that I always leave a message on your STS/SP if you visit me, but if you use DISQUS or a similar third party I will not be able to leave a comment on your page. And sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress so you might get a double message sometimes! Blame them, not me!

Another week has gone by and I can feel a big change in temperature which means that winter is just around the corner...YES! Cold nights with a warm bed, hot chocolate, films and great books! I just can't wait! And of course it is my Spooky Booky month so I'm just reading books with a horror or scary theme to it. I've already been reading about zombies and cannibals so it's been a good start to the month, AND I watched the first Resident Evil film yesterday on dvd. I love that film! I haven't had time to colour though and I hope to try and get a couple of films looked at tonight along with some reading. I feel a bit of improvement in my never ending headcold so MAYBE it is finally getting better! Lots to be happy about this week and a nice book haul to tell you about!

On the subject of books, I read a nice gory ebook last week by Jack Kilborn, Blake Crouch and others, called Draculas. I bought it in paperback as I enjoyed it so much. I recommend it if you like an over the top, funny, gory horror romp! I also bought the paperback version of a good zombie book I read recently called Burn the Dead by Steven Jenkins. I did go and raid the amazon sales again so I have enough new books to cover at least two or three more STS posts! Still, I love my books and I DON'T CARE!

What's on Chuckle TV #17

Welcome to Chuckle TV!  Every week I will be talking about what I have been watching in the world of TV, be it sport, documentaries, TV series, films, soaps or interesting news items. I'll be talking about favourites from the past and all the great sounding stuff that I haven't watched yet. Believe me, there are a lot of popular series that I haven't had the chance to see! Let the Count and I be your guide in the world of entertainment! Comments are welcome on what I'm currently watching but no spoilers please or your comments will not be published!

Reading has taken a bit of a back seat the last few days as I've been watching reruns of Masterchef The Professionals on Good Food. Love this series! Great cooking, exciting challenges, top chefs and a great set of judges. You can never have too much Masterchef! Funny how I love this yet I don't cook...!
