Book Review: Blood Drive by Jeanne C Stein (Anna Strong #2)

Anna Strong was a tough-as-nails bounty hunter, until the night she was attacked-and changed forever.

Now a vampire, Anna discovers that her long-dead brother may have had a daughter-and the girl's in serious trouble. There are some very dangerous people after her, but they're about to learn that to a bounty hunter with an unnatural thirst for blood, even the deadliest human predators are easy prey.

My Review:
Culebra is trying to teach Anna the feeding basics while she is in Mexico and tries to persuade her to sort things out with police chief Williams. The girlfriend of Anna's dead brother reports that her abused daughter is missing, and her daughter's friend was murdered for threatening to expose a paedophile teacher. Anna goes undercover at the school.

This book was such a let down after enjoying the first one. It didn't actually feel like a vampire story...it felt more like a crime novel with a few supernatural characters thrown in. The plot is a missing teenager who may be related to Anna and a teacher who might be perving on his students. We then follow Anna going to the school to investigate, Anna finding out the suspect teacher is a shifter, Anna getting David involved in the case, Anna discovering what Carolyn has lied to her about, and the search for Trish. There is so much talk and interviewing people that it feels more like a crime novel than urban fantasy. It is slow and lacks the action and excitement that I expect in this genre.

The subject of the book is child pornography and the story is of course pretty dark and grim. This doesn't bother me but I DON'T like the implication that the rapes aren't rapes because the victims 'enjoyed' it. That seriously offends me. In the first book Anna is raped but seems to think she was more of a willing participant because she was drugged and didn't fight back. In this book a thirteen year old girl is subjected to rape and abuse but despite her terror, climaxes leading to the assumption that she was a participant and may have enjoyed it. Sounds like an escuse a rapist would use and I expect better from female authors.

I also don't like the way the character of Carolyn justifies her treatment of her daughter. It is the chip on the shoulder defence, saying that she only abused and mistreated her daughter because she didn't get the chances in life that Anna was given. Oh please. I hate that whining 'woe is me' excuse for child neglect. Plenty of single parents on low incomes do everything they can to provide for their child, putting the kids first at their own expense, not selling them into sex abuse.

I'm afraid I did not like the slowness of the plot, the way the story was put together or any of the new characters that appear. I don't like the way that Anna refuses to resolve any of her issues ie Max, so it drags on into yet another book. It was just dull. And I don't like the ideas that the author puts in the heads of her female characters and projects as normal. Actually, I didn't really like anything about this book, and I've decided not to read on with the series.

Book Review: Marco by Charles A Hennessy

Marco was born of working-class parents on a bleak council estate in Leeds, and his Italian mother died when he was six years old. Today he has become a star chef of international renown, a controversial media celebrity, a national icon of the 1980s and 1990s, and a multimillionaire entrepreneur - all before the age of 40. How has this staggering rise to fame and fortune been achieved? MPW (as he calls himself and many of his new restaurants) is today widely regarded as the best cook in the country, but his astonishing talents and understanding of food are only part of the explanation. As this fascinating book reveals, there are many sides to this complex man which the massive media coverage he has received over the years have never revealed. Charles Hennessy tells the story with insight: the unpromising early life, his first job as a kitchen porter in Harrogate, the epiphany at the age of 17 when he went to work at the Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley, his arrival in London, learning under the Roux brothers, Pierre Koffmann and Raymond Blanc, and the opening of his own first restaurant, Harvey's from whence his fame and fortune grew.

My Review:
The first thing I like is the cover photo which is one of the best I've seen of Marco, instead of just the usual brooding pictures you see. It was not an easy book to get hold of either so I was pleased to get a good copy of it. Sadly the book did not really deliver for me.

It was not the subject matter that was the problem as Marco is a fascinating guy to read about. All the chapters that dealt with him, his career, the building of his business empire and his fights with people were all fun to read about. What spoiled the book for me was the author himself. With his background in advertisement copywrite and journalism, he feels the need to show off how clever he is with big fancy words and waffling gushing descriptions of everything, proving that he is much smarter and more cultured than the reader. I hate this style of writing and I have no intention of reading a lot of guff that I need a dictionary to translate.

When the author gets to the part of Marco's story where he is opening his business, we are treated to endless descriptions of the dining area, the VIPs and the atmosphere, and page after page of totally incomprehensible reviews from puffed up critics who seem to be competing with each other to ass kiss in the most revolting manner. When I started reading the reviews, they were written in a manner designed not to be understood by the ordinary plebs and it left you wondering what the hell these people were trying to say about the food! In one chapter, a third of it was filled with all these reviews which are dull and boring. I don't care what the critics said about a meal! I want to read the Marco story, not the inflated egotistical rants of food critics!

The other thing that drove me nuts was breaking up the narrative to insert a boxed 'thought' where a friend or rival would give his thoughts on Marco. Why can't these things be at the start and end of chapters instead of being right in the middle of the story you are trying to follow? Really annoying!

Overall, if you skip out all the waffle, there are some good bits but the waffle just overpowers the rest of it and I didn't enjoy the reading experience much.

The TBR 100 Book Countdown Challenge 571-546

My tbr has managed to sneak up over 600 books again and action must be taken!!! So I am setting myself a pretty tough challenge-to get that tbr from 612 as it stands today, down to 500 books by December 31st. Yes it is an impossible sounding task but not everything on the tbr is full length reading-there are short stories, novellas and novels to be devoured! Even if I don't get to the target, I'll be pleased if I get close. It would be the first time in 5 years that my tbr was 500 or less! My updates on my progress won't be weekly, just whenever I have something to report! Anyone who wants to try and reduce their tbr is welcome to post on my update posts about their progress!

I am halfway to my target and it's only July! I can't tell you how happy this makes me and I can really see progress being made at last. This week, I decided to tackle the horrors and thrillers that are on my house bookshelves as well as on my ereaders. The paperbacks are books I picked up in job lots at sales because I'd heard of the authors-though I've not been too lucky with this lot! Still, abandoned books come off the tbr just the same as books I've read and enjoyed, so I'm still happy with the way things are going!

Again I have three categories-the books I have finished reading, the books I abandoned due to not enjoying them, and the books I decided not to read at all. The books I chose not to read are books later in a series I've already abandoned (ie Deadlocked) or other books by authors that I've tried and haven't liked. (ie Bentley Little) So here is my latest progress report!

ABANDONED WITHOUT READING:

I added the eleven unread Bentley Little novels that were in my possession to the not interested pile. I didn't like any of the books of his that I tried this week so rather than plough through the rest of them, I accepted that this author wasn't for me and moved on.

Having decided to abandon the AR Wise Deadlocked series at book three, I saw no point in reading the other five books that I had and deleted them from my ereader.

Stacking the Shelves #91

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! Click on the link under the book to find its page on Goodreads or Smashwords.

Please note that I always leave a message on your STS/SP if you visit me, but if you use DISQUS or a similar third party I will not be able to leave a comment on your page. And sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress so you might get a double message sometimes! Blame them, not me!

This week was a real grind, I can tell you! I hate heat and humidity and this week we had both, making it too hot to get much done without drowning in sweat! Ugh! I didn't have the time to get any real blogging done and the tidying of the house will continue next week if its cooler. This morning it is cool and raining which made me very happy! I'm so much a winter person!

Happily, I did manage to get some reading done. I was tackling the horror tbrs and I wasn't impressed by any of them so they will be going to the charity shop next week. It means a whole pile off the tbr which helps my challenge. I'll be posting my latest progress tomorrow. I've also been amusing myself by watching episodes of Coronation Street from 1976 which has been a lot of fun. And the excitement is building with just a few days left until the Ashes get started!

Chuckles Corrie Mania #5

Welcome to Chuckles Corrie Mania! I watched Coronation Street all through the late 70's, 80's and early 90's but lost touch with it by 1999 due to work. So discovering that kind Corrie viewers have uploaded a ton of classic episodes on YouTube was great! I've spent two years gathering as many as I can, ready to get watching, and as I work my way through them, I'll be reviewing what I watch and sharing my thoughts. Would love to hear the thoughts on these episodes from other fans.

Thank you to Auntie Corrie(1976-1994), Mr Magister(1961,1995-2000), Classicsoap(2001+), CLKfanvideos(2006,2010,2011), corriestuff(various), OZZY45100(1960's, 1970's), FullEps(2009), XCorrieClassicsX(2006-2009), albiondean(2012-present), Sevin Alsoylar(2006,2011), Soap Fan 2013(various), JonathanOpenshaw(various) and everyone else who has supplied episodes online.

Episodes 13-16 1961 were screened on Granada Plus and are available on YouTube. I am reviewing those episodes here.

Episode 13-January 20th 1961
Frank and Ken have words when he reminds Ida that it is not their job to look after Albert. Esther offers to lend Christine some money. Florrie (right) gets on Ena's bad side by slagging off Martha, unaware that the women have made up. Ena responds by taunting Florrie about fancying Harry when he is obviously more interested in Concepta. The Factory girls flirt with Joe who admits to Christine that he paid her mother's bill because he likes her and wants to take her to a concert.

I'm not a great fan of Florrie's manner of trying to suck up to people like Ena by bitching about others and she is quite snotty about Harry having a date with a mere barmaid. I was pleased to see Ena take her down a few pegs! Look out for Prunella Scales as the co-worker who fancies Harry.

Episode 14-January 25th 1961
Eileen Hughes asks for Harry's address and Florrie won't give it to her out of jealousy so Ena smugly steps in to provide it. Harry is not pleased to see Eileen on his doorstep and reluctantly invites her in-then can't get rid of her. Christine's uncle comes to visit and gives her money, ruining her date with Joe by chasing him away when he calls for her. Doreen sees Joe in the pub and tries to chat him up but he isn't interested and goes back to see Christine. Harry finally gets to his darts match with old friend Len Fairclough (left)

This was the first appearance of Len Fairclough and he hasn't changed much in the Corrie years! Ooh Florrie needs a good slap for her attitude...I loved Ena grinning at her as she faced off with young Eileen. Poor Harry, surrounded by hot blooded mad women!

Episode 15-January 27th 1961
Linda and Ivan come back to visit and Elsie can't get any of them to stay in for the TV repair man so she leaves a key for him at Florrie's shop. When Elsie gets home, the house has been burgled by someone pretending to be the TV man. Annie and Jack are thrilled to have Billy home from National Service. Emily Nugent (right) finds that Ena won't help her to prepare the Mission for an upcoming event. A gas explosion nearby has everyone on the street being evacuated and Ena is fuming that they are all being sent to the Mission.

How young Emily looks in her first appearance! She is so quiet and timid that mice would bully her, never mind Ena! We only get a brief glance at Billy Walker in this episode but he features more later.

Episode 16-February 1st 1961
Ena is having tantrums as everyone moves into the hall and she lays down the law to them. Annie (left) is irritated that Jack brings his bowling bag, declaring he would pick it over her if he could. Leonard decides to try and persuade the evacuated residents to come to the Mission more often. Ena is complaining about noise causing Elsie to give her a mouthful and Jack threatens that if they aren't welcome in Ena's home, she might not be welcome in his pub. Annie is touched that Jack has her love letters in his bag.

I loved it when Jack got one over on Ena-he is such a great character. The state that Ena gets into over the unwanted guests was pretty funny-she wasn't showing much community spirit there!
