The Chuckles Great DIY Nightmare #4

Sorry to everyone who has been wondering where I am and what I'm doing. It turns out that moving the furniture in my room, however hard it was, was the lesser of the evils. Sorting through endless bags, ripping and shredding paperwork, moving things from one place to another then change your mind and move crap back is way worse, as I'm discovering. I've spent all week working through bags and boxes until I'm ready to scream. Our recycle bin for paper and cardboard is collected every three weeks so to get in all the rubbish, packing boxes, food packaging, old letters and newspapers etc, everything has to be ripped into small pieces so that takes ages. It also gives you The Claw, where your fingers are so sore that it hurts to straighten them and you can't grip anything!

Today was a bit of a nightmare. We decided to get the furniture in my dad's room rearranged. To recap, the big IKEA bookcase we removed from my room will go into my dad's room where the chest of drawers once sat. The drawers will go to where the TV unit is and that will be sawn down to a smaller size for added storage and the TV goes back on top of it. It seemed straightforward enough and SHOULD have been done very quickly as none of the items are heavy to move.

First we had to empty the books I was temporarily storing in it and get them into my room where I can't fall over it. But as we started to move the bookcase, the back fell off. It took us ages to get it back in its grooves as it kept bending in the middle. Finally my dad had to nail the bloody thing in. Next he dropped one of the shelves and it scraped all the skin off the back of my heel, leaving it raw and bleeding so a medical time out was required! Then at last after a big delay, we got it moved into position. My dad is letting me have 3 of the shelves for my stuff so all my heavy WWII books and magazines went into one shelf, my Elvis magazine collection and other oversized books into shelf two. I'm keeping shelf three empty until I finish sorting my room.

After I dealt with the two shelves, we moved the drawers into place and stuck the TV on top. My dad decided to saw the TV unit another time and we moved it out of our way. Then we had to move a pile of stuff that was in the TV unit and find somewhere to put it. Why is it that what seems like a half hour job turns into a three hour total nightmare??? And to cheer me up I still have two full bookshelves to go through in my room, sorting out what will go to the charity shop, a few more bags to go through, two full shopping bags full of paper that needs ripping, a pile of stuff on the floor AND piles of books/cds/dvds on top of bookcases that need to find a home. Ugh, it's a nightmare and this sorting crap could go on into next year!

Who had the stupid idea of getting the house sorted...???

  1. I had the claw before. As a temp, I did some moving work here in the city ( 2 men and a truck type of thing ). Wary of using the hands while they felt like that, but it ended up being okay. Nothing that about 20 rice crispy treats didn't take care of.

I hope you get things situated to your liking.

    1. It's such a long slog. Every time I think I'm done, I find more things to sort. Frankly this should have been done ten years ago but I kept putting it off so its my own fault! Yes The Claw is great fun...I'm treating it with chocolate at the moment!

    2. Enjoy the chocolate. Now, my brain needs coffee, music and media conflict!! 😉

  2. Sorting is the worst! Especially when you end up with a pile of stuff with which you don't know what to do. That always happens to me. Good luck with it all! :)

    1. Removing a big bookcase was great in theory but dealing with the stuff in, around and on top of it has been way worse than I expected. I'm at a loss about where to put everything that needs keeping!

  3. Once it’s done it will be amazing. It will be worth it even though it’s a nightmare just now!

    1. I keep telling myself that Heather! The space I'll have will let me use my Wii and use my chair to sit on rather than fill with stuff but all this sorting is getting on my last nerve!

  4. Are the papers the kind of paper you could use a shredder for? Or is it too big and thick?

    1. The problem is that we already have a binbag full of papers needing shredding that all have personal info on them so we're ripping up everything by hand that doesn't have that detail on it. The shredder is forever overheating every 15 minutes so the process is very slow!

  5. I can see why you'd be frustrated! It'll be super satisfying when it's all done though.
Ouch on the heel! A cut there is the gift that keeps on giving every time you move it! :(

    1. I'm a bit concerned as it isn't healing and is still sore. I'm watching it like a hawk to look for any sign of infection though.

  6. Dave has a point. I'm glad you are making such great progress and I figured you were busy with all the home stuff. Stay safe!

    1. Yeah this job should have been tackled about a decade ago but I kept putting it off and now the timing couldn't be worse with charity shop shutdown, recycling centre being on limited hours, travel restrictions and us feeling tired and moody!

  7. Sorting through things is such a hassle. Hopefully your heel is feeling better.

    1. It's driving me mad Mary. I had no idea so much junk had gathered and I'm trying to find places to put it until we can get rid of it all. I will get there but some days, I'm so frustrated with it all.

  8. Oh that sounds exhausting! No quick job is ever a quick job. So many things go completely off the rails. Hopefully you're getting some rest!

    1. Rest feels like a luxury I can't afford right now! Some days I feel like I'm walking through treacle trying to make progress with it all. You're totally right about quick jobs not really existing!

  9. Yeah - that always ends up being more work than it seems lol

    1. I can tell you something-we are never ever moving any furniture or having any more clearouts after this!

  10. ohh my! I guess the one who is really to blame is lockdown? so much time spent at home makes us do thinks we wouldn't have otherwise. I liked reading to your adventures but really felt you and got very stressed. Specially with the scrap on your leg. I hope it will heal soon. Would be nice to be your neighbour so I wouls have a look through the books you plan to give to charity. Hope everything gets sorted soon.

    1. I only blame lockdown for not being able to get the unwanted stuff out of my house. Charity shops have pretty much been shut down since about March so I delayed starting the clearout until they briefly opened...but as I started they shut again! The recycling centre isn't open much and there are two hour waits to get in and they are restricting what you can get rid of so that doesn't help! I wish you guys WERE my neighbours and could help yourselves to my books!

  11. I just moved so I feel your pain! We STILL haven't gotten everything organized, but it's one of the main reasons I've been absent the last few weeks. I hope the rest of your organizing is easier!

    1. It might actually have been easier to move house than sorting everything in such a confined space! I just want it to be over and I feel your pain too!
