Chuckles Ponders Time

Doing a recent book tag about television watching got me thinking. Hands up who else thought that the pandemic and lockdown would lead to us reading lots of books and watching a ton of TV and films? *puts hand up*. Yet I've watched less and struggled with my reading as well. There are lots of reasons for the lack of 'fun' time we are having-personal or family/pet health issues, having to work in jobs deemed essential, extra shifts to cover sick co-workers, moving home, DIY needing to be done, deep cleaning and sorting out the home, general lethargy, increased housework, just not being in the mood...whatever it is, some of us are feeling less productive for watching and reading stuff.

I find myself wanting to go back and watch a lot of my favourite things and to watch reality TV tough jobs, cookery shows and fun mindless stuff like Pimp My Ride rather than try new series and things. I think it's probably like comfort eating for the brain or soul or something! The point is, I have a ton of dvd box sets waiting to be watched, a shed load of films to be watched, a ton of reality TV to catch up with and about four or five hours a night to do it. I need to cut the time spent on the computer every day if I want to find more hours to watch and read more but saying it is one thing, doing it is another!

I'm also doing the epic re-watch of drama series/soap Coronation Street. I'm writing my own episode guide of every episode I watch and I'm into my fourth or fifth year of it. I've watched the few episodes from the 60's I could find, and April 1976 to the start of 1992 (I'm on March). As the series is still running, I have a LOT to do! I can get through eight or ten episodes a night but it is going to take forever if I don't find more time! I also have my scrapbook to do and two houses to deal with so it isn't going to be easy to get down time to sit still and watch stuff! I also want more time to do my puzzles and play on the Wii which I haven't used once since I got it set up. How do I fit all of this into my days?

I'm constantly struggling over how much time I spend on the computer each day and you guys know I've tried to come up with solutions. I tried doing tons of blog posts in advance, blogging only on weekends, cutting out a few memes, stopped following a few people, even the odd week long blog break...but none of it seems to leave me with the extra time I need. So what is the right solution?

END THE BLOG?
Are we going to have to end our blogs to get the time to do other things? Maybe, and I don't see me still doing this in five years if I'm honest, at least not at the level I'm currently on. I've been doing this for seven years. I may need to cut down the blog activity considerably if I want to keep going as it's just so time consuming. But that then asks the question of whether it is pointless to do a half version when I could just quit. I've discussed it with my dad but he can't tell me what to do. If I didn't have online blogger friends I know I'd quit the blog now to save myself the time and energy. I know I could still visit your blogs to keep in touch. But am I ready to just quit the blog? No I don't think so!

CHANGE THE BLOG?
I might have an idea to try.

If I go back to writing blog posts each weekend Friday-Sunday or just Saturday-Sunday it'll let me do my weekend posts as normal, post Around The Blogs each Sunday and do TTT in advance for the coming week, and schedule the posts. Then I could maybe catch up on visits and comments for the first half hour that I get out of my bed around 7am-8am. That lets meread or watch stuff until my dad gets up between 10am and noon, which is my quiet time. In the afternoons when my dad is up and about I can be doing scrapbooks, cooking, housework while he watches his sport or reads the papers, or we can watch favourite films and TV shows. I go up to my room at 6pm for my own time which I can use for reading or watching stuff or playing on the Wii. After 6pm my dad watches films downstairs, listens to his music or uses his games console.

This might be worth trying. So for the coming week I'll be limiting myself to a thirty minute catchup each morning. I can also use the time to update the stats on my Tackling The TBR and Around The Blogs posts. (I set up a new post for each as soon as I publish the current one, then add stats and links to the new ones daily until I'm ready to publish them) Hopefully the new plan works and gets me a bit of time back into my days!

Are you trying anything new for your blog? Are you trying anything to give yourselves more time?

  1. I'm glad you're not giving up your blog! I so like reading your posts. But I hope you're able to find a balance so that you have the time you want in life for all those other things you want to do, too. :D

    1. The blog is kind of hard work at the moment but I'm not quite ready to totally stop-but I certainly need to find more time to get things done!

  2. I tend to reach for rewatches or rereads in time of stress too. I'm not sure on the blogging. I have some of the same concerns but really want to stay active. I would miss all the other bloggers to much if nothing else. I haven't really taken anytime to think about a plan but am just kind of grabbing what time I can. For me spending a few minutes on my laptop is feeling like a nice break from reality so I don't see giving it up anytime soon but it is definitely harder finding time.

    1. Comfort TV always works to cheer me up on crap days. It'll be difficult for you to find time for any kind of relaxing right now so I have sympathy for that. It's certainly a tough hobby for using up time and energy!

  3. I haven’t tried anything new on the blog recently, but over the years, I’ve slowly increased and then slowly decreased the number of posts I write a week. I try to post 3 times a week currently. I’ve given up on writing long reviews because each one took days to write and nobody looked at them. I’d like to try out some new post ideas, but they’re time-consuming, so I don’t know when they’ll get done. Good luck with your blog!

    1. It's a puzzle isn't it! I want to keep doing my blog as it is because I enjoy the posts I do and the interaction which those who visit-but I need to get smarter with how I use my time. This week I'm going to try and get ahead in a few regular posts and get the book reviews ready to publish, then next weekend I'll switch to my new strategy!

  4. I probably would have had more time if Ken hadn't had all the health problems he's had. I've had some health problems as well but I put my stuff on the back burner for now. I don't spend as much time visiting blogs but I'm still trying to keep up with my blog. Now that things are moving with Ken I think I'll have more time to do more blog visits. I haven't been reading as much. All of the reviews posted lately were for books read 3 months ago. I have been watching more tv though, at least more Netflix.

    1. It's really tough for you to find some order in your life at the moment isn't it. Hopefully Ken will be in more of a routine that you can adapt to. I'm a bit behind on reviews too-about 8 Paddington, 3 Enid Blyton, a handful of horror!

  5. Don’t end your blog, I regret stopping mine for those few years, you might regret it!

Our sky has gone on the blink whilst we try and watch Corrie tonight, I love it but I never watched any of the old episodes.

    1. I don't feel ready to quit yet as I do enjoy it but I know I can't spend so much time doing it. If I get a bit smarter and get into a good routine I can fit in reading, reruns of Corrie, films, dvd box sets, puzzles and crafts, my Wii and all the house clearing!

I watched Corrie as a kid in the late seventies/early 80's but I lost touch with it around 1999 and went back to it around 2010. I spent lots of time collecting episodes on several sites and onto disk so I can watch it all!

  6. I regretted deleting my original blog (and all it's social media channels)... I'd been struggling for over a year and one day I snapped and just deleted it all. It was a nice 4/5 month break but I got itchy to return thus my current blog. You could always pause for a while and see how you feel if the new plan doesn't help?

I was nodding along as I read the beginning paragraphs about watching less, reading less etc during lockdown and turning to mindless comfort stuff... Massive ditto! It would be nice to get my mojo back now but it's still eluding me.

    1. My worry about a long break is how much I'll miss and need to catch up on! A week off the blog leaves me twitchy to catch up so 4 months would be a lot worse! I think I either need to get a balance or quit cold turkey but I'm not at that level yet so I'll experiment with changes!

I'm not back to normal. The thought of reading anything above 120 pages right now switches my brain off! I'll be finishing the Paddington books this week and hopefully a few Enid Blytons and horror novellas. Then I need to get back to longer books!

  7. My blogging has driven me crazy. I need to catch up on so many comments. Things have been so crazy but I will not give it up. I've made so many good connections through it I can't imagine letting them go!

    1. That's why I hang in there every time blogging becomes a chore! I can't imagine not catching up with you guys!

  8. I fully support changing HOW you blog. Part of that might be limiting how many other peoples' blogs you follow. Over on WP I only follow around 35 blogs. Not everyone who follows me or even actively comments gets a follow from me. I calculated that if I stopped blogging, I could read an additional 3-5 books a month, easy. But I LIKE blogging.

Whatever you do, I hope you can find the balance that works for you. I know enough people who have just outright quit because they realized blogging was a very small priority to them. Others, like myself, have limited themselves. The people who don't seem to limit themselves tend to either blog full time (and somehow make a job of it, somehow) or burnout in a couple of years and are never seen from again.

My advice would be to cut the number of blogs you regularly check. Beyond that, good luck! :-D

    1. I actually only follow about 15 blogs now which isn't too bad to keep up with. My main issue is really getting time to write my own blog posts especially the book reviews! Burnout is something I'm certainly afraid of! Hopefully getting ahead each weekend will give me relax time during the week!
