Urgh, my reading this week has been chaotic and disappointing in so many ways!We are about halfway through the month and I'm way behind on my three challenges. Let me start with a brief update on them.
I set aside an urban fantasy series planning to re-read book one to refresh my memory and then read the other five. Well I can't even seem to get through the darn re-read! I'm just NOT in the mood for urban fantasy at the moment. So last night I decided to look for a short trilogy on my apocalypse shelf and do that as my series instead. Great plan! I read book one last night-and as I finished it I realised that it was 120 pages-which is fewer pages than the challenge allows as each book you read must be over 250 pages! Why did I not CHECK!!!
Well it isn't all bad, I thought, as I can use that book to take off my TBR total! Wrong. I'd forgotten to add this trilogy to my TBR when I bought it about two years ago. Wonderful. This is the second book I've read this week that wasn't on my TBR. It makes me think that I really need to go through my physical and digital bookshelves and find out what is not on my TBR and think about getting it added. Trouble is, I suspect there could be a pile of them and that will add a huge dump onto my TBR, undoing all my good work this year AND destroying my morale! I like adding the books three at a time so that the TBR is under control each week but I fear I might need to change tactic! If I get them all added at the end of the year I could start the New Year with an accurate total for the TBR and get stuck in again next year. Then maybe I would add fewer books to the total through the year and see the numbers come back down quicker...och I don't know! I'm also bummed that I still have all six books to read for the challenge *sulks* but at least I added one finished book to the Goodreads Challenge!
I have read ONE book for this challenge! I didn't love it and have no interest in reading on with the series which annoys me. It was One Word Kill and it just wasn't greatly exciting, although the end was interesting. All the books I picked for this challenge seem to be long and I'm not feeling like long books but I sort of need to get them dealt with. What I really want to do is re-read Jurassic Park but that won't reduce the TBR so I'm sort of in limbo with this challenge. Although I picked out 5 to read I know I can change the books I selected and read fewer than five if I want. Flexibility is there but I'm not in a SF mood really which is typical!!!
This is the challenge that I've done well with as I'm really in the mood for non fiction at the moment. I've already read three books for the challenge and I'd set a target of five so I could surge past that if I wanted to, especially with four new Game of Thrones related books coming this week! I will be reading a fourth book for that challenge today to get it off the TBR total for tomorrow. I might go ahead and read my fifth book and then try to focus on catching up with the other challenges. I was so excited to try the three challenges this month but I'm making a right horlicks of it at the moment! I really do need to get myself in gear over the second part of this month and stop being so chaotic!!!
According to Goodreads I'm ten books behind schedule with this challenge but I'm not worried about that really, as I know with a few good books and long reading nights that I can catch up before the end of the year. I set a target of 200 books which I will reach and at the moment I've read 163. I do have a lot of books around 200 pages and a pile of novellas and I can read each of these in a night so I will get there. It's just a matter of not getting into a flap and getting stuff read.
At the moment my focus is on my November challenges which have slowed down my reading a bit then I'll be doing a reading blitz in December to get this challenge finished. By the end of the year I will have this done and dusted.
I still have two empty spaces for this challenge. I know I won't get an X for the author name as I work from the books I have in my possession and I'm not going looking for new books just to finish a challenge! I do have an author name for Q but it's not a genre I feel like reading right now but I will try to get it done in December. The book is Dog On It by Spencer Quinn, a dog detective mystery. Getting this one done would be a big help in as near as possible finishing a challenge.
My two challenges for reading a pile of paperbacks from my physical shelves, and clearing a pile off my e-readers have also been getting done. I have one book for the paperback challenge to read and two books to read for the e-book challenge which will be part of my December reading. My series catch up has badly hit the wall so a new challenge for next year will be focused on that!
I did complete these two challenges earlier in the year, fifteen royal related books and a full 26 letter alphabet for book titles including X!

You poor thing. I'm going to end up making mine I think but only because I picked a cozy series and for some reason, I fly through them. Just know that at least you are reading which is what is important.
ReplyDeleteYes you're right, I am at least reading stuff this month. This time last year I was in a slump that lasted two months so anything is better than that! I read my fourth NF book for the challenge and have four new GoT books to read. I do have to get more read for the other challenges before I let myself read them! That might motivate me! I'm glad you're doing well!
DeleteI can totally empathise with your frustration at getting your book finished and then realising it doesn't fit the challenge criteria. Exasperating!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a really dumb mistake to make! It was niggling me that something wasn't right as I read but I couldn't put my finger on it! That'll teach me for trying to be smart and change my challenge books!
DeleteThat's a lot of challenges to be working on. I've petered out on the two reading challenges I started at the beginning of the year. But then I always do about this time. Good luck with all of yours!
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit frustrating that the three I really want to take part in all happen in the same month! The series challenge happens at least twice a year so I can take part in the earlier version next year and leave November in future to the SF and NF ones! The ongoing challenges from through the year will be dealt with in December!
DeleteThis sounds too stressful for me! I don't sign up for a lot of challenges because I don't want to the stress. Reading should be fun! Sorry you have hit a couple of speed bumps!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to take part in all three and by choosing a 6 book series instead of a trilogy, I've made it harder for myself! I still intend to get it done though but it will require real effort!
Deletei think we all put too much pressure on ourselves because, face it, we just can't stop adding those books to our reading shelves. i know i will never read all the books i have and keep adding to my kindle but i can't stop myself. you are doing great, 163 books is a lot of books...and then writing reviews...crossposting...

I'm not buying as many books as I used to which is good. Most of the books I add each week to my weekend post are ones I forgot to add to TBR after buying them. I'm determined to read everything I have or delete it. I've had a good book cull this year! I always appreciate your support as I plod along Sherry!
DeleteI started trying to organize all of my kindle books and couldn't believe how many I have still to read. I like challenges for helping me with that.
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to decide how to set up this challenge for next year...do I take the plunge and add all the books not yet listed on the TBR and start with a higher number or do I continue adding them three per week and give myself the chance to read to keep the balance...
DeleteI'm failing epically at my Series in a Month challenge this time around. I bossed it in May but this time I just can't... I'm not the in the mood! :( I may switch out for an easier target or I may just call it quits. I haven't decided.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the rest of the month! At least you're reading. I'm doing a lot of thinking about reading with short concentrated bursts of actually doing it. If I read as much as I'm thinking about reading I'd be laughing!
