Winter Blues #1

Doesn't this cold weather make you want to curl up in front of a nice warm fire? I think I'd rather do that than go the penguin above as he flies off to a nicer place! I'm liking being at home, thank you very much and I won't be leaving my sanctuary until next year, unless I win the lottery and move house south.

MONDAY
I was going to throw out a small bathroom storage unit that was past its best-white and scabby and cheap looking. Instead I sanded it down today and spraypainted the white drawers with rose gold paint-a nice pink with a glittery effect through it. It certainly gives the drawers a wee
bit of colour. I then started with the first of four layers of metallic gold paint on to the frame of the unit. I had to do this with a brush as it would've been quite awkward using spraypaint. After two hours I did the second coat.

I also did more tidying in my room by packing stuff into storage boxes and getting them out of my way. I went through a couple of binbags as well, throwing out old newspapers, postcards and magazines I didn't want. I put my audio cassettes into a box and got it out of my way and packed disks with TV shows and films into a storage box too. I still have a few binbags to look at and find homes for any stuff I'm keeping, and get everything else sorted into either the bin or ready to send to charity shops after Christmas and New Year is over.

TUESDAY
Groan! It was delivery day today which always knackers me at the best of times but with all the work around the house I was even more tired than usual. I wanted to cry when my alarm went off this morning plus it was really cold and foggy so shivering at the door as I unpacked bags from the Asda pallets and gave them to my dad to take inside wasn't what I needed. Then there is the fun of getting all the bags into the kitchen, unpacking, sorting, rearranging and putting them away. Still, it's better than going to the supermarket! We had a milk spill all over the place so every item had to be washed, dried and then put away. The delivery driver was really nice and helped find the leaky item and take it away. He was also touched to receive a nice Christmas bonus from us for his hard work during the pandemic.

Tonight I got started on sorting out all my political books on my grey bookcase, getting them into political parties, then historical order. I then sorted my monarchy books on the same bookcase, sorting them into historical order, then put my biographies and memoirs into order too. It leaves the other three shelves for another night as I had to sort through dvds and cds for a charity shop bag, and sort through old papers, deciding what to shred or rip up and get it into the recycling bin. That took a couple of hours. Ugh, so time consuming!!!

WEDNESDAY
It was back to painting today as I tackled the final two coats of the metallic gold paint onto the storage unit. I'm still waiting for it to dry and then I can slot in the drawers and get it into my bedroom hopefully tomorrow. It used to be used in the bathroom for storing spare razor blades, bars of soap and stuff like that so it will be perfect for keeping my assorted medicines and remedies in. It's not a big unit so it should slot nicely into a small space in my room.

My last Amazon package before hibernation arrived today and it was a big multi-pack of prawn pringles, my favourite flavour! I managed to maul my way through half a tube in about ten minutes which was both awesome and disgusting in equal measures! Awesome in taste but a disgusting display of sheer gluttony! This was after pigging out on Japanese Teriyaki salmon with spice flavoured rice, which my dad and I both enjoyed!

Tackling The TBR

In December 2018 I launched Tackling The TBR, a challenge to reduce the ever extending TBR pile and 2019 was pretty successful in that regard. In 2020 I intended to make a big effort to reduce my TBR by buying less, getting stuff read and getting rid of the things that I just don't want to read from my bookshelves and my ereaders Maurice and Myrnin! However the darn Coronavirus Pandemic has put the skids under all my plans and I had to suspend the challenge. I've now decided to bring it back in a bid to kickstart my TBR reduction as nothing else has been working.

The TBR total shown is the total number of books I own but have not read yet-wishlist books are NOT in my TBR! Sometimes there will be a difference between the books read and new total-if I read a book not on the TBR it counts for books read for the week but not for this challenge.

BOOKS IN
-Books in refers to bought, downloaded or gifted books being added to the TBR list.

BOOKS OUT
-Books read refers to books read that were ON the TBR and DNFed is obvious.
-Deleted from the TBR are books I lost interest in reading, or sequels to DNFed books I no longer want to read and have been removed without starting to read them. These three categories added together are my books 'out'.

I'm posting my progress on the 7th, 14th, 21st and final day of the month as before, even if there is no progress to report and anyone else is welcome to join in. No rules, set up your posts how you want and when you want, just reduce the pile! And each week I'll add my new week to the end of the post so I can track how the whole month went.

November 1st-7th
TBR Start Total: 1546

BOOKS IN:
New Books In:

BOOKS OUT:
Books Read: 2
Books DNF: 0
Others Deleted From TBR: 0

Target Total: 1500

New Total: 1544

I'm happy enough with two books this week because both are big non fiction books!

Another decent reading week so mustn't complain. Three non fiction read! One was over 300 pages so I'm pleased with that.

The book I read wasn't actually on my TBR which was frustrating but I guess I did deal with it before it was added. Either way, one less to worry about and it counts for my reading challenge on Goodreads.

My dad treated me to an Amazon gift card so I've treated myself to a few hardbacks and downloads I've been waiting a while for and I'm getting them added on to the TBR before I try a winter reading blast! I deserve a wee treat after all my hard work and I don't feel guilty as I'd have bought them all at some point! As I'm not buying over the next six weeks, I aim to get that TBR down a bit!

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

Sorry everyone, I was getting stuck into the continued changes to my bedroom. On Friday I tackled a few binbags which contained a lot of old newspapers and magazines, and I got them torn up and into the recycle bin which turned my hands into The Claw again. Yesterday was spent trying to arrange the bookshelves, finding places for the excess piles of books and getting other things into place. There is a huge improvement and most books are now on shelves. It took me as long to decide where everything was going as it did to hoof the books from bookcase to bookcase. Dealing with these hardbacks is tiring for sure but it all looks a lot better now.I still have to tidy my grey bookcase, redecorate a small mini storage unit with stickers and spraypaint, deal with the other binbags, and get everything else into storage units to keep things as tidy as I can. Never has my room seen a clearout like this and there is a lot more to do!

No time for reading at all this week which is a shame but I've been too tired every night and I really had to use all my time to do this big task. At night I've just been watching a bit of TV to chill out before trying to sleep. I'm now in official hibernation so no more buying from Amazon until after New Year. I am waiting on a few pre-ordered items to come like season 15 of Deadliest Catch and a couple of books, but other than that, I'm loaded for bear and ready to enjoy a few long lies on those cold winter mornings that are coming! I've had little time to battle Blogger so not much activity on that front this week but I'll get caught up today.

Chuckles Blogging World
I'm not far behind as weekend catchups go so I'll be getting a few posts put up today and finishing up blog visits and comments as usual.

The Week Ahead
I'll be continuing to sort some stuff in my bedroom, empty a few binbags and sort through it and maybe move some furniture in my dad's room to get that out of the way. I'm not sure how much reading and blogging I can get to this week but I'll still be around.

The Chuckles Great DIY Nightmare #3

This was the day I was really dreading, when most of the work was going to be done. As a reminder, here is how things looked on Tuesday when I finished.

WEDNESDAY
Right, strap yourselves in and here we go. I started at ten this morning, and task number one was to empty Bookcase 4. I was going solo today as my dad wasn't feeling well (just tired as he didn't sleep) and I got stuck into carefully emptying it. All five shelves with two rows of books on each shelf. The hoover of course broke down so I had to get a dustpan and brush to the floor where the Bookcase was moving to, then I got it into position and dusted it. I then emptied the big cd rack on top of Bookcase 2 and got it on top of Bookcase 4. After that I dusted and filled the cd rack again and felt pretty happy with progress so far. That was an hour of work, including a rest for liquid refreshment!

Next, I got my brush to the floor where Bookcase 4 used to be and emptied Bookcase 2. I moved it into position in front of the fire (old gas fire that doesn't work) Now I actually have all my bookcases pretty much in out the way as far as they will go. What an absolute joy to know I'll be able to move around without falling over stuff! But I'm getting ahead of myself. Now I had to face moving all the books out of Bookcase 1 and move the books in from the other two rooms a pile at a time and deciding what was going to go in the back of eleven shelves in total. Oh man.

In the back of the shelves I was putting things like my dvd box sets of Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Ax Men, Jungle Gold, also my mass market paperbacks, VHS tapes I wanted to keep, extra editions of favourite books ie Harry Potter and ASOI&F, and some books I've read and won't get back to for a while. In the front of Bookcase 4, I put my urban fantasy collection on all five shelves along with YA dystopia. On the front of Bookcase 1 next to my bed are favourites like my best editions of Harry Potter and ASOI&F, Paddington, and some of the non fiction books I intend to read soon. On Bookcase 2 at the front are my Indie horror collection.

I still have a lot of books that don't have shelf space yet but I do intend to sort out a couple of other bookcases over the coming weeks (Bookcases 6, 7, 8, 9). Once they are sorted out, I'll get more space to work with. Still, the worst is over now from a moving furniture point of view. The rest is about sorting books into genres and authors, maybe changing which bookcase they go on, stuff like that. I'm still not thinking about the piles of binbags to sort through and everything I need to find a home for!!! I still have to sort through the books and get some unwanted books into bags for the charity shop next year, but again, that's for another day. Here is how the room looks after all that work!

THURSDAY
So much for a rest day! My dad and I spent the whole day ripping up the boxes for VHS tapes and got it into our recycling bin. They need to be ripped up nice and small to get maximum use out of the bin and stuff more in it! Still, it gets another task over and done with. What fun!!! My hands look like claws at the moment!

FRIDAY
So stiff it took me two hours after the alarm went off before I finally crawled out of bed! I was so stiff and sore but I'm pleased at what has been achieved so far. Now I need to get on with the task of gradually going through these dreaded binbags and getting as much in the bin as possible!
