Book Review: Monster in my closet by RL Naquin (Monster Haven #1)

I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn't imagining things when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I'd seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?

After all, I've always been a magnet for the emotionally needy, and not just in my work as a wedding planner. Being able to sense the feelings of others can be a major pain. Don't get me wrong, I like helping people--and non-people. But this ability has turned me into a gourmet feast for an incubus, a demon that feeds off emotional energy. Now, brides are dropping dead all over town, and my home has become a safe house for the supernatural. I must learn to focus my powers and defeat the demon before he snacks on another innocent woman and comes looking for the main course...

My Review:
Part of me loved the idea of real life closet monsters, while the other part of me had little interest in a wedding planner and dead brides. I was in two minds about reading this book but I'm glad that I decided to give this one a chance.

Zoey is an empath and a wedding planner, which go together nicely when dealing with neurotic brides and obnoxious mothers. She is a fashion disaster and that drives her freakishly neat business partner Sara mad. Life takes a strange turn when the closet monster from her nightmares appears in her kitchen, making muffins and looking for somewhere to stay while he deals with his wife cheating on him with a bridge troll. This opens the floodgates to various creatures seeking her help.

Maurice is wonderful! He is kind, caring and is determined to protect and look after Zoey. It helps that he is the world's greatest and fastest cook! I would have loved to have a friend as loyal and caring as Maurice and he can move into my house anytime. The rest of the 'monster' cast are a lot of fun. We meet Iris, who is like a Sasquatch bodyguard-a lot of very funny scenes involve Iris! Molly and her brownie family are very sweet and she has a drunken abusive husband to deal with. Zoey has a friendly hag as her neighbour, the fairy version of Homeland security to protect her and a herbalist friend-Andrew-who can read auras. Andrew is a really nice guy and would be the perfect match for Zoey if he wasn't gay. His adorable pet fox Milo is one of my favourites in the book.

Zoey has her problems. A psycho incubus has become fixated with her and is seducing and murdering the women that Zoey has connections with, including her brides. It is up to Zoey, Andrew and Maurice to find a way to save these women and destroy the incubus. As if that wasn't enough, Zoey has to deal with her pathetic ex husband Brad who doesn't get the picture that being divorced for eight years entitles Zoey to have a life that he doesn't feature in. The scenes that he appears in are pretty funny. You really do want to give the guy a big slap.

There is a romance on the cards in the book but I confess that it left me pretty cold. Yes Riley was a nice enough guy with an interesting job but I felt there was no chemistry between him and Zoey. The book would have worked equally well without him. I felt as if he was just there to save Zoey when she got herself into trouble-something that Maurice was perfectly capable of doing, and with more personality! However the good part of him being a potential love interest was that it allowed Brad to spoil a date in a scene that was very funny and it was something that a lot of people can relate to.

My real niggle with the book was that it spent too much time on the details of the various weddings that Zoey was involved with. I wasn't really caring about fabric samples, bird seed decorations, colour schemes and bands. I found that a little boring in places but it doesn't really ruin the story. And Zoey is a bit on the dumb side when it comes to recognising who the incubus is targeting in her social circle! A few DUH moments for sure.

This book has a really good mixture of paranormal action, interesting creatures and good humour, which makes it a light and enjoyable read. I recommend this book to fans of cozy paranormal mysteries and those who like light urban fantasy.

Obituary: Anne Kirkbride

I was horrified watching Sky News last night as the news came through about the death of Anne Kirkbride, famous for her iconic role as Deirdre Barlow on Coronation Street. As a child I watched Corrie in the 80's with my mum and my first big TV memory of it was the wedding of Ken and Deirdre in 1981 followed by the gripping episodes where Deirdre is about to leave Ken for Mike Baldwin. She was my favourite character and that never changed as I followed her ups and downs in the soap. Divorcing Ken after his affair with Wendy, making excuses for her hellspawn daughter Tracy, the tragic death of husband Samir, putting up with her acid tongued mother Blanche, her false imprisonment, her fling with Dev, being seduced by Lewis and remarrying Ken. There were so many wonderful dramatic performances over the years.

But what I loved even more were the funny moments. The embarrassing antics of her mother bringing shame to her was a highlight. One of the funniest ever episodes was when the Barlow family went to support Peter at his Alchoholic Anon meeting. That was pure comedy gold. Every time Deirdre got drunk, you knew it was going to be funny. There was the funny storyline where Wendy reappeared in Ken's life and Deirdre was insulting her in front of Ken, Brian and Julie. They were discussing what cakes they liked and Deirdre just looked coldly at Wendy and said 'Manchester Tart'. I loved it! Recently her acidic barbs reminded me so much of Blanche and I was excited by the thought of her morphing into her mother! Sadly it was not to be.

Offscreen Anne had her battle with cancer in the 1990's and a nation was praying for her to come through it safely. A documentary filmed later showed Anne to be a funny, kind and warm human being who touched everyone in her life. She must have been an amazing lady to know from the lovely things that people have said about her. My heart goes out to her family and all her Corrie friends who must be in a state of shock. The Street will never be the same again and I will always be listening out for that throaty laugh which will never sound again.

Rest in Peace Annie.

Reading with Chuckles #21

Welcome to Reading with Chuckles! This is where I fill you in on what I'm reading each week-what it is, where I got it or heard about it, what I think of it, if I'm continuing with it or abandoning it and any special offers I'm aware of where you can try the book yourself. Comments are welcome but no spoilers please! It's not fair to other readers!

I am now on to my winter readathon. This means I'm turning my attention to series that I've started and liked but never got round to finishing. So I hope to get through a LOT of books and catch up with a few favourites!

This week I started reading a new series called Monster Haven by RL Naquin. I liked the first book which features a empathic wedding planner, her closet monster houseguest who is a total Masterchef, a needy ex husband, reaper love interest, Skunk Ape bodyguard, brownies and fairies in the garden, a hag neighbour and a dangerous incubus serial killer. Good action and humour and though it isn't my usual cup of tea, I did like this enough to continue with book 2. I also continued with my Jaz Parks series, finishing book 6 which I loved and 7 which was a bit up and down.

This was a busier week for getting hold of books which bumps up the tbr slightly but I am pleased to report that 12 books were read or abandoned this week which made it pretty successful! In September last year my tbr hit 900 which shocked me into taking action-and by tbr, I mean books I actually own in paperback or on ereaders. (My wishlist of what I want to read is NOT included). I am pleased to report that my tbr is now down to 630-635 which is a huge improvement and I'm very happy with it. I aim to get it down to as near 600 as I can by the end of this month! It would be the first time in about 10 years that my tbr has been that low!

So lets talk about this weeks books. I managed to pick up copies of the rest of the Secret McQueen series by Sierra Dean-3 novels and 2 short stories. I look forward to a secret week coming up at some point! I'm really just going to skim the Ricky Ponting book to look for the fights and match reports so that should be a quick read despite the book size. I got a few paperbacks this week but I'll save them for next week's STS!

Book Review: Rogue by Rachel Vincent (Shifters #2)

Okay, so cats don't always land on their feet.

I know that better than most. Since rejoining the Pride, I've made big decisions and even bigger mistakes: the kind paid for with innocent lives. As the first and only female enforcer, I have plenty to prove to my father, the Pride, and myself. And with murdered toms turning up in our territory, I'm working harder than ever, though I always find the energy for a little after-hours recreation with Marc, my partner both on- and off-duty.

But not all of my mistakes are behind me. We're beginning to suspect that the dead are connected to a rash of missing human women and that they can all be laid at my feet--two or four, take your pick. And one horrible indiscretion may yet cost me more than I can bear...

My Review:
I decided to give book two a try mainly because I had already bought it and hoped that Faythe has grown up a bit from her experiences in the first book.

Sadly, if anything I found this book to be worse. The investigation into the dead toms seems to take second place to Faythe's annoying attitude and behaviour. Yet again, her complaining and breaking Pack rules comes first and everybody else and their wishes and feelings don't count. Marc is lovely and totally adores her and she treats him like something foul that she stood in. He's fine to sleep with when she feels like it, she claims she loves him but she can't even reassure him that she sees any kind of future for them as she doesn't want to get tied down to him. What a selfish, annoying bitch she is. You can also bet that if Marc were to start treating her like that or find a new girl to love, she would be yowling about how unfair he was.

Add to that the fact that she is part of a pack yet refuses to follow any pack rules which nearly cost her life in book one. She constantly puts herself in danger with her reckless disobeying of orders which then puts the rest of the pack at risk as they try to save her yet again. And THIS is what is being groomed to rule the pack??? Oh please, the pack is doomed! How can she be in charge of the safety of the pack when she has no clue how to keep herself safe even with written instructions and diagrams?!!! She is the most spoiled, whiny immature female lead character that I have seen in a long time and I cannot stand her. You cannot expect her to lead them into anything but death and disaster.

*SPOILER ALERT*
Faythe's human ex-boyfriend had to be the world's worst and most uninspiring Mr Evil. And of course dumb Faythe has to keep his turning secret, putting everyone in danger AGAIN! Rules are there for safety and she endangers everything by failing to mention this somewhat important thing because she is afraid of getting herself into trouble. Again with her, it is 'Me Me Me'.

The irony is that the books had real potential. I liked the plot ideas and some of the pack members and the relationships between the pack members could have had many interesting angles but it was all spoiled by moronic dumb Faythe. Such a pity when this happens!
