Book Review: Devil Sharks by Chris Jameson

When Alex Simmons is invited to a college reunion in the Hawaiian Islands aboard the private yacht of his old pal Harry Curtis, he is not sure what to expect. The two men had a falling-out years ago over the suicide of one of their friends. Could this be Harry's way of making amends? Or is something more sinister in store?

The crew sets sail and arrives at Orchid Atoll, the site of a deserted former Coast Guard station. But they are far from alone. Out here, three hundred miles from civilization, Alex and his friends are about to encounter two very different brands of evil--one human, the other with fins--unlike anything they could have possibly imagined. They have entered a place where there's no law, no mercy... and no way out.

My Review:
At college, Alex and his friends were as close as any friends could be until Derek killed himself. It was Harry's reaction, blaming Derek for his selfish actions and having no sympathy that led to the breakup of the group with Alex in particularly reacting badly to Harry's words. Now Harry wants to make amends to his former friends by inviting them and their partners to a reunion cruise on his boat in Hawaii. Alex is reluctant but feels he has to go to bring closure to everything that happened but doesn't know that an ongoing feud with Harry is going to be the least of his problems.

The cruise begins with tension between the friends because of the past and Alex is determined not to forgive Harry, which makes me wonder why he went on the cruise. I guess a free holiday was enough to tempt him. He does agree that Harry can take the ship on a detour to an atoll where Harry's dead father served at a Coast Guard station. It is when they explore the atoll buildings that they come across a delirious dying man who attacks and badly injures Gabe, the one man who can captain the ship. With the possibility of being stranded with nobody able to pilot the boat or use the radio, things are difficult. When the deadly sharks appear, some are trapped on the atoll unable to get back to the boat, while others are stuck on the boat seeking a way to call for help and rescue their friends. It is then that they are paid a visit from the people that Isko barely escaped from.

I previously loved Shark Island by the author, which is also a stand-alone adventure and this book was a solid enough read but not as good. I do give credit for the stunning covers on both books and the upcoming Shark Beach. They are visually stunning! My issue was not really with the story, which I liked with the sharks and the bad guys to deal with. For me it was not greatly liking the MC and his ongoing vendetta with Harry.

I kind of felt that Alex was a really petty kind of guy. Yes what Harry said at the time was horrible but no doubt he was acting out of shock and grief for Derek's death and feeling angry in his own mind that Derek in some way didn't care enough for his friends to reach out to them for help, instead taking 'the easy way out'. I think Harry was hurt by this and if Alex and his friends had just talked it through, they could have got past it all without falling out about it. After all, everyone reacts to grief in different ways. Now that Harry is trying to make it up to Alex, Alex is still holding that grudge and taking every chance to have a go at Harry. I didn't much like Alex to be honest. It boils over between them again later when Harry doesn't want the violent man brought aboard the ship and Alex takes the chance to fight with him about that, leading to tragedy.

Isko and his friends crossed the wrong man and are all thrown into the water with the sharks. He is badly hurt and feverish, but manages to crawl onto the atoll and take shelter. When Harry's group find him, he lashes out thinking they are sent to finish him off, leading to Gabe's injury and a world of trouble for everyone on the boat. His story was interesting and collides nicely with the cruise story. Dev's shark fear means he refuses to leave the atoll when the sharks first appear and his partner Alliyah reluctantly has to stay with them, even though their relationship is on the verge of collapse. With a storm coming, the atoll is not the place that she wants to be and the others on the boat are frustrated at the thought of rescuing or leaving them, if they can get the boat operational.

There were lots of relationship sub plots in the book. Dev and Alliyah's relationship was falling apart over the behaviour of both of them and I found them really annoying. Dev's attitude on the atoll was frustrating and I wanted to hit him. Luisa was self obsessed and I was frequently annoyed by the way she demanded all the attention and wanted every man to lust after her. She got worse as the book went on. The fued was quite annoying and the more interesting characters were pretty neglected in favour of idiots. I found the shark plot a lot more interesting that who was sleeping with who and who had been with who in the past. I felt that this angst in the group did take away from the shark drama in the book. It was a decent read but not as good as the first one but I still look forward to his third shark book.

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!

I can't believe that a month has passed already. It was a good reading month and I hope for the same success in February. I reduced the TBR nicely and didn't buy too many books which was also pretty good. Overall, I'm happy with how things went and hopefully a good month to come. I am also trying to get stuff done around the house which is going to take up some time over the next couple of weeks. I feel tired all the time which is making the task take ten times as long as it should be doing, which is frustrating, but I'll get there eventually! This week I've picked up a couple of books in series that I've been following but I'm also adding a few that aren't on my Goodreads TBR that I need to read for a challenge this month.

I'm enjoying watching Masterchef US, watching season five at the moment. I'm amazed at the amount of bitching, fighting and people acting like tossers but I'm enjoying all the drama! There are contestants I want to slap for their arrogance and bitchyness but it is entertaining to watch! In the afternoons I'm re-watching Steve Austin's Broken Skull Challenge so my dad can watch it with me. That Skullbuster course is well named! I also bought season two of The Crown so I can binge watch the whole thing.

I'm doing a re-read of Jaye Well's Red Headed Stepchild which I really enjoyed, so I can do a series catchup this month. I might go straight on to book two or I might try reading books for other challenges like these two.

Book Review: The Tank by Rick Chesler

Inmate Kane Brooks escapes from prison while participating in a program to train as a commercial deep sea diver. When he assumes a new identity in Florida as an alligator wrangler removing nuisance animals from homes and businesses, it looks like he’s found a way to settle down and lay low. But that all changes when a casual backyard gladiator racket turns into an underground empire staging man-versus beast spectacles in a cage-fighting style ring.

After Fish & Wildlife officer Heather Winters is tipped off about the illegal activity and starts to investigate, she goes undercover, posing as a spectator at the matches in order to infiltrate the underground culture. But when Winters gets close to obtaining sufficient evidence to make an arrest, she learns the man staging the contests is not at all who he says he is. When Brooks catches on to her true role, Winters finds herself in the unenviable position of having to face off as a contestant in the ultimate fight card—woman vs. great white shark in… THE TANK.

My Review:
Kane was training to be a deep sea diver while serving a prison sentence but decided to escape during a job and set himself up as an alligator wrangler. Using a false name he is happy with his new life but everything changes when he is left with an alligator that he has to keep overnight in his pool. His drunken friends dare each other to spend time in with it for money and it is the start of a whole new business venture. Kane starts to arrange human v beast fight nights and it becomes a popular illegal local event. However, Kane is aware that the more events he does, the bigger the fights need to be and that may attract the attention of the local authorities.

I went into this book thinking it was going to be a dumb animal version of those cheap Best of the Best type films and I wasn't really dying to read it despite this being a favourite author. The idea of a human in a tank with an animal in a fight seemed a bit dumb at first but it was actually done in a clever and entertaining way. I was really happy to discover that it was actually a really great book and that the plot really did work on every level. I'm not a fan of having an MC that is a convict but I did find Kane to be really interesting. I was intrigued about the new life that he set up for himself and how he developed a stupid drunken idea into a successful if illegal money earner. I wouldn't say I was rooting for Kane but I did find him and his ideas fascinating to read about. I also liked that Kane was determined to use the animal for one night only, not allow anyone to have a weapon to hurt it and then releasing it straight back into the wild. He does not want any animal hurt even to save humans from injury in the fight.

The friends start by asking a few trusted people to come round for an alligator party to test out the idea and it is a success. The idea develops into getting people to pay to watch and offering some of that money as a prize to those brave enough to go into the tank with it. The event starts with an alligator in a portable Octagon tank that can be set up in a secret location and told to people at the last minute. Kane soon realises that he will need to up the game and he starts introducing new animals into the fight like Florida panthers and sharks. As the stakes are raised, Kane has to take bigger risks to get the rewards.

The other story running through the book is Heather's adventures. Heather is working for Fish and Wildlife, and investigates when a recently released croc's tag is found where it was released. At this point Heather has no idea that Kane took it for his tank but she almost catches him releasing it after the fight. She soon starts to hear rumours about the fight nights and is put undercover on the case. It takes time to find her way into the fights and she attracts a bit of attention of the wrong kind when she starts asking too many questions. Is her cover going to be blown or can she take Kane and his friends down?

I loved the actual fights. They were pretty tense as you waited to see if the person is going to be able to last in the fight without injury or if they are going to get hurt. I loved how crazy the actual fights were and wondered about the insanity of the idiots that were getting into water tanks with wild animals! It does seem that humans can be very stupid when money is waved in front of them, especially after a few drinks! I also enjoyed the scenes where Kane was going out trying to catch his latest animals to use in the fights especially his battle with the Florida panther. That was a lot of fun to read about. I found myself questioning some of the things that Heather was doing during her undercover work which risked her whole mission. The irony is that Heather and Kane both cared about the welfare of the animals despite being on opposite sides of the law.

I enjoy Rick Chesler's books because he is a great storyteller and his creature features are always fun to read. This was different from what I was expecting in a good way and I feel that few authors could have carried off this kind of plot so well. His characters are always interesting and he likes to have bad guys as MCs some of the time, as he did in this book and in Sawfish. It was nice to get in the heads of characters like this and see their motivations and see them as more than just the bad guy. I like the way the author mixed action and tension with a totally different plot.

A really enjoyable creature feature!

Puppy Love Challenge

This challenge is hosted by the lovely Barb over at http://bookertsfarm.blogspot.com/. It runs for the whole of February and all you have to do is read at least one book featuring a dog or cat, or a book where there is a dog or cat on the cover! Easy! Then do a wrap up post at the end of the month and link it to your book reviews so everyone can see what you thought of your books!

OK, I'm not sure exactly how many books I'll get to this month for the challenge as I'm going to be reading books for all my other challenges too, and then leaving time for some mood reading if I have any time left! On this post I'm going to look at some of the books I have with dogs and cats that I might read for the challenge and I'll see what I can fit in!
