Chuckles Retro Reads: The Moon Dwellers by David Estes

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

In their world, someone must die.

My Review:
*I received a free copy of this book from the author in in return for an honest review*

OK, those who follow my reviews know that most get 2* if it's not really my thing but not a bad book, or maybe 3* if I liked it. I rarely give out a 5* as I'm kinda picky and hard to please. I can honestly say though that this is a fantastic read full of the things I love in the YA dystopian genre. Plot wise, it has nothing to do with The Hunger Games but entertainment wise, it is right up there with it and that is high praise from me!

So why is this book so good? Well firstly, the characters are so well written. You are rooting for them all the time, you love the interaction between them and you really do care what happens to them. You just laugh and cry along with them. The book switches POV between Tristan and Adele which actually makes the plot move along even faster. In some books a switch of POV slows things down or hampers character development, but not in this case. I feel that the switch actually enhances both. That really is rare. The bromance with Tristan and Roc is lovely and I like the fact that the characters are flawed and don't have superhuman powers or intelligence. It makes the characters seem real and make it easier to identify with them.

There is amusing dialogue as well as nicely described action scenes. The world building is focused and detailed without throwing big info dumps at you. The writing style is smooth, uncomplicated and keeps your attention, as you turn each page wanting to know what will happen next. It isn't spoiled by long winded descriptions of things that don't matter. You are told what you need to know and that suited me perfectly. Personally, I didn't want to put it down and it's difficult to find a place to stop! As Adele prepares to tackle something hard or scary, we go back to Tristan as he goes through a situation and pauses on the edge of disaster, then we are back to Adele's trouble again. This means that there are constant cliffhangers that you just have to resolve before you stop...and suddenly you've read 5 more sections!

So what were the things I had a problem with? Um, nothing actually! I can't think of a single thing that bugged me or frustrated me, and that hardly ever happens. I did like the idea that one reviewer had in having a map to refer to when the action moves among the subsections so you can see who is where. That would be a nice thing as an extra for the readers.

The book was rapidly moving, exciting non stop action, and you go through a range of emotions with the characters. And yes, I did shed a few tears! You'll know it when you get to it! I will be purchasing my own print copy of this book asap and I will certainly be following(and buying) the rest of this series.

Thanks to the author for sharing this with me. It really is a little gem of a read.

5 stars.

Chuckles Cover Love #32

If there is one thing that makes a great book even better, it is when it has a cover that we love! The cover design is what catches the eye as we browse through a bookstore shelf or check out the Amazon or Goodreads recommendations. The right cover makes me look closer at a book, to read the blurb and maybe make a purchase. A poor cover might mean I never look at the blurb at all.

This week I'm looking at an example of where the cover design changed halfway through which I find eternally frustrating! It's zombies this week and I liked the prequel cover and the first two books. Then it went to a horror based cover that just wasn't as nice to look at.

This has a slight menacing look and you know that going in the hospital is just a bad idea. You can generally grab this prequel free to meet Gus! Love these snowy winter scenes which match the plot of the book. But then we got two rather uninspiring follow ups..

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my new feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!
****************
It's the end of another week at The Book Cave and it was a pretty good one overall! Reading was excellent as I tackled more of the Morganville Vampires. I have two books to complete and three short stories then I'm done! I should get those done at the start of August. I just couldn't keep up the book a day schedule with things needing doing around the house. Still, at least I know I will finish one big series this year which is good! This month is all about trying new authors from the ereader and in paperback to see which I want to stick with. August will be about finishing off a few series hopefully, including Morganville. So far, summer reading has been good and I hope it continues! I downloaded some books this week but no paperback purchases except one second hand book!

On the blogging side, I remained ahead by the best part of a week but today I plan to tackle the next three top ten tuesdays which are my own topic choice and a discussion post which will put me three weeks ahead with all my regular posts except Around the Blogs and STS which I complete each weekend. In theory this means I can concentrate on getting ahead with my book reviews which I'm a bit behind with. The goal by next weekend is to be three weeks ahead completely which means more time for blog visits and fun stuff! This will make a huge difference to the Book Cave. The extra work this week means it took a bit longer to answer your comments and visit but things should be back to normal this week. I also revamped my blog with a bit more Game of Thrones and Harry Potter and moved everything into some kind of order! I'm much happier with it now!

DOWNLOADS:
This week, the books were recommendations from blogging friends that I decided to try or I've seen the books on their blogs. Don't worry if I don't like them-not your fault!

GIFTS!

This bad boy will be hanging up on my bedroom wall very soon!

Chuckles Blogging World:
As I said above, I'm aiming to get three weeks ahead in the majority of my posts to give myself more time for fun stuff online like Pinterest and more blog visits. It meant hard work this week to compose my posts but I'm ahead in Cover Love, Can't Wait Wednesday, GoT Gossip by three weeks, Chuckles Chat by two weeks. Today I plan to do a third Chuckles Chat and my three TTT to get a real head start. Then I need to get as many reviews written this week as I can so I am almost fully three weeks ahead. For formatting reasons I always do my STS on each Saturday and I do my Around The Blogs post through each week so obviously I won't get ahead in the. Things are looking good though! As always, click on the links for any post you might have missed last week and say hi! All comments will be answered.

Book Reviews:
I'm so frustrated by my lack of progress on reviews which is why I decided on this blog-ahead-fest! This will give me more time this week to get a pile of reviews done and have some in reserve for busy days. That's the plan anyway!

Book Challenge Updates:

Reading With Chuckles June Review

My Goodreads Challenge total currently stands at 132/250. This was another productive week for getting books read.

TBR total of books I own but haven't read yet stands at 819.*sigh* I did show restraint and only picked up a few downloads this week but this month I need the total down below 800 and staying there!

That's all for this week! Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to visit my blog and leave comments. You guys are great!

New-To-Me July Challenge

Welcome to July!!! I can't believe it is this far into the year already but it's time for another Chuckles themed reading month! I will be looking mainly at new-to-me authors that I haven't read before or maybe a new-to-me series by an author I've liked if time allows.

Kermit looks a bit overcome by it all...but 5 of these are short prequels of about 60/70 pages, and another pile of about 15 are under 200 pages so I do hope to get to them all this month!
