Cover Reveal: Embers and Ice by Isabella Modra(Rouge #2)

Everyone is wrong about hell.

Vulnerable and weak after her battle with her guardian Joshua, Hunter is snatched up by the Agents who work for a ruthless and cold institution called ICE. There, Hunter is imprisoned with other mutants of different ages and abilities, forced into a nightmare of constant experiments and brutality.

Joshua is a mess. Frantically trying to fix the mistakes he made, Joshua embarks on a quest across the country to find Hunter and rescue her. But the company he keeps is continuously distracting him, and Joshua can’t control the strange feelings of love and comfort that begin to boil inside his cold, icy heart.

Will Hunter escape and find her fire again, or will Joshua and his mistakes find her first?

Isabella is an imaginative, free-spirited, dreamer trapped in the body of a 19-year-old Aussie. She lives in a quiet suburb in the Adelaide hills, but her mind is always elsewhere. She began writing stories as soon as she could spell, and wrote her first legit novel at 13. It was the story of two girls who become teenage detectives and solve mysteries, Nancy Drew-style. All through her schooling years, Isabella sat in class hoping some sort of adventure would take her away from maths class and stupid teenage drama. From there, she entered the Twilight craze and - of course - wrote her own vampire novel. But it wasn't until the beginning of her senior year at high school - when she worshipped anything that had to do with Superman and had the word 'hero' in it - that Isabella and her sarcastic/tom-boy friend came up with the idea for Rouge; a novel about an ordinary girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities. 2 years and 3 months later, Rouge is complete and ready to be released into the world.

As for the author herself, she is currently a Nanny working at a DVD store who teaches guitar and watches Supernatural religiously. She enjoys cups of tea, travelling everywhere, tall attractive men and a perfect mix of Taylor Swift and ACDC music.

To fellow Goodreaders - I love to meet people. Feel free to message me about anything and everything and we can be friends :) Peace xx

Have you read book 1 in the series? If not try Rouge!

“You have a fire inside of you.”

Hunter Harrison desperately hopes her guardian Joshua is joking when he confesses – very solemnly – that she is pyrokinetic. Hunter would normally laugh in his face, if it didn’t explain all the spontaneous fires that happen only when she’s nearby. Still, the logic is a little hard for a smart, socially isolated eighteen-year-old to comprehend. That is, until Joshua explains the truth behind her parent’s death.

Spun into a new life filled with cold truth, terrifying wonder and a mountain of responsibility, Hunter faces the flames dwelling inside her. But the fire is more deadly than Hunter can comprehend. It explodes when she’s angry. It erupts when she’s afraid. And, worst of all, it threatens the life of her boyfriend Eli, who is innocently unaware of her abilities.

So how does an extraordinary teenager juggle dealing with superpowers between work, graduating and keeping her hormones in check?

Simple. By fighting fire with fire.

My review of Rouge:

As a debut novel, it was nice to see that good editing was employed throughout, with only a couple of small typos which can happen in any book. It was also nice to get a real background to the story as we follow what happened to Liz and Joshua in real time before Hunter was born. As well as giving you insight into the origin of the fire gift, it means that huge info dumps can be avoided later when we join Hunter. The author made a good choice here in showing us the past, not just telling us about it. For for a young debut author, I thought that the writing was polished, well presented and easy to follow. The story flowed smoothly and in an uncomplicated manner, which I liked.

I also liked the characters. Joshua is that mix of cold scientist and a guardian who finds it hard to show his emotions, making him a fascinating character. Hunter's tantrums did get a bit weary sometimes when I felt she was getting mad for no good reason and being unfair, but you can't really complain when it was a deliberate plot device! She wasn't the smartest person in the world and is reckless about hiding her powers, which was frustrating sometimes, but I did like her, which is vital. Eli was very sweet-how come I never met guys like him when I was at school??!! He was just the right calming influence on our fiery heroine. Jack interested me and I'd have liked to have seen a bit more of him in the book, as with Miss Smart but I understand that the author wanted to concentrate more on the three main players. There are hints given in the early part of the book which lead you to the big reveals, and if you are paying attention, you'll see them. Guessing what was coming doesn't spoil anything though.

"I can make fire out of nothing because my mother was infested by a Swedish drug and a supernatural lava creature"

The plot was nicely put together with the lava rock that can think for itself, the dangerous drug, and the superhero powers. This showed good imagination and the author wove it all together nicely without blinding us with science. The science bits were done simply so that the reader can understand what is happening without a degree in physics! I liked the final section of the book best as this is when the plot really takes off, especially the warehouse scene. I also liked the humour when Hunter was debating her superhero outfit and name.

For me, I did find it a bit too slow in places. That is not the fault of the author, that is just my preference for action packed urban fantasy. I cannot fault the storytelling in any way and I did enjoy reading it. The book will appeal to fans of YA and adult paranormal and fantasy fans. There was a little sexual content but not too graphic. My feeling is that this could well be an author to keep an eye on.

Book Review: Birth of a Killer by Darren Shan(Saga of Larten Crepsley #1)

Larten Crepsley is a child slave working in a silk factory with his cousin to earn money for his poverty gripped family. When he finally stands up to his bullying boss Larten finds himself an outcast on the streets with no prospects or hope. An old vampire called Seba offers him the chance to be his assistant and become a vampire when he is older.

At last! I'm finally getting round to reading this four part series about the life of Mr Crepsley before he meets Darren in the saga of Darren Shan series. I loved the character and was interested to see that he was just as wild and rebellious as Darren was when he first becomes an assistant. Seba has more patience with Larten than Mr Crepsley has with Darren though! Young Larten has had a horrible childhood and I reckon he was better off with the vampire life than what his other path could have been. As he starts to learn about vampire life he is also introduced to the Cirque Du Freak and Mr Tall. I enjoyed this part of the story, getting the chance to see Mr Tall and a new set of freakish performers was like meeting an old friend again. It is here that Larten starts to find his confidence, learn a few skills and tricks, and finds a new best friend. Wester is on the hunt for a vampaneze killer who murdered his family and Larten decides to help him on his quest, bringing himself into contact with a dangerous enemy that we see later in the saga.

The other enjoyable bit was Larten's first visit to Vampire Mountain where he is introduced to mindless violence and total humiliation, making him question the whole idea of being a full blooded vampire. It was great to see Vancha and Paris again in this book, and to see the doubts and fears that established characters from the saga like Seba and Mr Crepsley had in their younger days. Vampire Mountain is always great fun to read about and that three book arc was my favourite part of the original saga.

I don't really have any complaints about the book. There weren't any slow bits and the writer keeps the story flowing along without the need for long winded descriptions. The characters are well written and developed as well, which is important when introducing Wester and adding more about those we know better. The author as always does a good job of making you care about the characters and this is quite poignant when you know the fate in future books of people Larten is meeting for the first time. This book has all the good elements from the saga series-humour, action and a big dose of hard life lessons for our main characters. It also has the added benefit of adding a vital bit of back story in the life of Mr Crepsley. Bringing in a few old favourites in different circumstances was very enjoyable and I enjoyed reading this book. If the rest of the series keeps up the standard then I will be quite happy.

I would recommend re-reading The Saga of Darren Shan to remind yourself who the main players are so you can read this 4 book series without thinking 'I know that name...who was he again?' like I kept doing! Suitable for older teens and adults who don't mind a little bit of gore in their reading.

3.5 out of 5!

Journal of Bristol Blackburn
Sunday, March 17th

There are times when being psychic really bites, and this is one of them. Here it is, three in the morning, and all I can think about is the boy who will eventually have his hands on me.
I have no idea what his name is. We’ve never met, but I feel like we’ve grown up together. I’ve had visions of him since I was six years old. Now, eleven years later, I know we’re getting closer and closer to finally meeting. I think it’s going to happen any day now.
And the thought scares the hell out of me.
I know what Dream Boy will look like. In a word: hot. Dark hair that falls loosely over his deep blue eyes. He has an angel’s face and the devil’s grin.
I know he’s got a bad boy attitude. Half the time, I get flashes of him getting hurt. Sometimes he’s playing the hero. Other times, he’s just being an idiot. Many times, it seems like there’s someone who enjoys hurting him.
What I don’t know is what he’ll be to me.
There are times when he seems to love me. Don’t ask me why. But he’ll look at me with nothing but love and contentment in his eyes. Earlier tonight, I had one of those dreams. One where he couldn’t keep his hands off of me. Weird that I know every inch of his body, yet I have no idea what his name is, huh?
Then there’s the other vision. It was the first one I had of him, and the one I have most often. It’s the one I woke from tonight, the feeling of his hands still on my skin.
In that vision, he doesn’t look at me with love, but with hatred. He has his hands wrapped around my neck as he slowly squeezes the life out of me.
So any day now, I’m about to meet the boy of my dreams —literally. Then I get to see if he’s going to be the love of my life or the end of it.
Funny thing is, I’m not sure which idea scares the crap out of me more.

New Year New Blog!

So another year has begun and I certainly hope it is better than the last one. It got off to a rocky start with
my mum back in hospital from December 30th right through New Year which was depressing for all of us to say the least. Still no answers from the doctors as to what is going on so we have to keep waiting.

This year there will be a lot of changes in my blog world. I found that I was spending so much time on blog tours, memes and author promotion that I wasn't getting time to read as much as I wanted so I fell behind on my reviews. This year I plan to get more organised and get back to reading for fun as well as making more time for me stuff ie watching films, catching up on TV! So here are my aims for the new year:

1-read more books
2-clear the shelves in my house to give me more room
3-catch up on series I started and never finished
4-keep up to date on posting book reviews
5-get more fun stuff on the blog

I'll be adding film and tv series reviews as well as talking about issues in the world that interest me or that I want to rant about! This year my blog followers will get a chance to see the person behind the blog a bit more instead of just endless promotional stuff. I will still be doing author promotion, blog tours and book promotion but it will not dominate the blog in the same way as it has been. Hopefully the blog will become a bit more interesting to read this year! Lots to look forward to in the world of sport as well with the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics in Russia, football world cup in Brazil, Ryder Cup, ICC cricket 20-20 from Bangladesh and lots more! Couch potatoes like me are getting ready for great entertainment.

Thanks to everyone who has followed me and left comments on the blog. Please remember that I moderate the comments before they are published so they might not appear for a few days. I don't censor opinions but I will censor offensive comments!
