Book Review: Paddington Races Ahead by Michael Bond (Paddington Bear #13)

“My legs are a bit short for the pole vault!” repeated Paddington hotly. “But they’ve always been that way.”

Somehow Paddington Bear always manages to find himself in unusual situations. So it is no surprise when he gets into a spot of bother with some shaving cream, causes a London bus to be evacuated, and is mistaken for a famous Peruvian hurdler by a film crew. There’s never a dull moment when a certain bear is around!

My Review:
Paddington has no idea of what it takes to get around London on your own and when he is told he should buy an Oyster, his first instinct is to head to a fishmonger rather than a transport hub, which leads to a lot of mess and confusion for the bus driver! The chaos continues when Paddington is instructed to clean up his bedroom and the results are not what anyone in the household was expecting. Honestly, they should know better than to give vague directions to the easily confused bear. He needs to be told exactly what you want him to do and EXPLAIN what is obvious to everyone else as a bear from Darkest Peru can't be expected to know everything that people in the UK take for granted as basic knowledge.

Exercise fever has hit the town and Paddington is no exception. Confusion reigns when he is mistaken for a Peruvian athlete who is in London for the Olympics. Of course that is any easy mistake for anyone to make! (NOT!) I mean, just look at the poor little bear! Does he look like an Olympic athlete??? Paddington is able to secure a free gym pass which Mr Curry starts plotting to get away from him, like the mean idiot that he has always been. Paddington is in the park when he stumbles across a performance of Hamlet, and of course he can't resist getting involved in a way that causes more havoc! Things get more exciting when Paddington is asked to star in a short film that is going to be sent to the Home for Retired Bears in Lima, where Aunt Lucy resides.

I was very amused by the confusion that poor Paddington suffered after being told that the best way to travel around London with an Oyster! Why did his loved ones not tell him the difference between an Oyster travel card and oysters from a fishmongers! How is poor Paddington expected to know what Oyster travel means if nobody explains it to him! It was a funny story though. I like that Paddington stories are always entertaining and funny, and the illustrations throughout just add to that. Another fun adventure to enjoy!

Book Review: Paddington Here And Now by Michael Bond (Paddington Bear #12)

'I'm not a foreigner,' exclaimed Paddington hotly. 'I'm from Darkest Peru.'

Paddington Bear always manages to find himself in tricky situations, sometimes extraordinary situations. Like the time he had a difficult encounter with a policeman or when he found himself in deep water with a newspaper reporter. But since arriving from his native Peru after an earthquake Paddington has always felt at home with the Brown family who found him on Paddington station. Then one day, a surprise visitor arrives at thirty-two Windsor Gardens. Is it time for Paddington to decide where 'home' really is?

In 2008 Michael Bond's first novel featuring the adventures of Paddington Bear will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. Paddington's amazing ability to get into and out of trouble is at the heart of the countless stories that have been loved the world over ever since. However, it is many years since a new novel has been published, and in celebration of this landmark, Michael Bond has written the funniest and the most moving Paddington novel ever.

My Review:
Paddington has been very proud of his beloved shopping basket but is at a loss when it goes missing outside a shop. Witnesses tell him that is was removed and he wants answers from the police who are more interested in arresting an agitated bear and if he is in the country illegally. At home, Paddington is intrigued to hear about anti-burglar paint and decides to paint the drainpipes around the property to protect the Brown house, especially with a known thief on the loose. Mr Curry of course sees the chance of getting some work done for free and ropes Paddington in to doing his home too.

In Mr Gruber's shop, Paddington is fascinated by a piano that plays itself and puts on a bit of a show for the people looking through the window. But before the confused bear knows what is happening he has been signed up as a concert pianist and panic sets in as the show approaches. As Halloween comes to the area, Paddington is in full trick or treat mode but makes the mistake of deciding on a prank at Mr Curry's house which goes wrong. Paddington is happy to do a survey but his innocent comments about things that are happening lead to a reporter getting the wrong idea about crime in the area, and Paddington is up to his paws in trouble again.

In a happier turn of events, Paddington is thrilled to discover that his missing Uncle Pastuzo is alive and well and doing rather well for himself! His uncle is another fun and adorable bear in an interesting family and I very much enjoyed meeting him. But does his arrival mean that Paddington is going to leave the Brown house?

Another very enjoyable Paddington tale to add to my collection. I just wish there was way more of them!

Tackling The TBR

In December 2018 I launched Tackling The TBR, a challenge to reduce the ever extending TBR pile and 2019 was pretty successful in that regard. In 2020 I intended to make a big effort to reduce my TBR by buying less, getting stuff read and getting rid of the things that I just don't want to read from my bookshelves and my ereaders Maurice and Myrnin! However the darn Coronavirus Pandemic has put the skids under all my plans and I had to suspend the challenge. I've now decided to bring it back in a bid to kickstart my TBR reduction as nothing else has been working.

The TBR total shown is the total number of books I own but have not read yet-wishlist books are NOT in my TBR! Sometimes there will be a difference between the books read and new total-if I read a book not on the TBR it counts for books read for the week but not for this challenge.

BOOKS IN
-Books in refers to bought, downloaded or gifted books being added to the TBR list.

BOOKS OUT
-Books read refers to books read that were ON the TBR and DNFed is obvious.
-Deleted from the TBR are books I lost interest in reading, or sequels to DNFed books I no longer want to read and have been removed without starting to read them. These three categories added together are my books 'out'.

I'm posting my progress on the 7th, 14th, 21st and final day of the month as before, even if there is no progress to report and anyone else is welcome to join in. No rules, set up your posts how you want and when you want, just reduce the pile! And each week I'll add my new week to the end of the post so I can track how the whole month went.
