Dog Days Of Summer #11

TUESDAY
I'm still trying to deal with the insomnia. I'm now wondering if perhaps it is my pillows being too flat as I'm getting neck pain in the mornings. I've ordered a few new ones from Amazon which should hopefully come later this week and I'll see if it fixes the issue.

WEDNESDAY
Today I tried my hand at paella for the very first time and it was brilliant! OK now I admit that I used the SimplyCook kit which makes up and supplies flavour pots to add in as you cook, doing most of the work for you! I did buy in the rice...It's the first time I've cooked with paella rice and I really loved the taste of it. I hope to get the kit again if it is available each time I order and I'm also going to try my own recipe. My dad very much enjoyed it too which is also a good thing but he's never been a fussy eater. He'll eat anything I try my paw at.

Speaking of paws, I got mine on another pile of Paddington books. I thought I was buying a small set of Paddington books for young kids but instead I have an A4 hardback with six Paddington stories and gorgeous full page colour illustrations! I LOVE IT! My dad also surprised me with a couple of Donald Trump coins for £2 each. I must admit I love the coins and they'll look great in my collection!

THURSDAY
This has been the kind of day where you suddenly look at the clock and wonder what you've actually done with your day! I don't really remember getting anything much done other than quick tasks like taking recycling and rubbish out to the appropriate bins, or making the macaroni for dinner. Oh and doing a small load of washing and a bit of cleaning in the bathroom. Oh and ripping up a pile of old boxes for the paper bin and a few other bits and pieces. OK maybe I did a bit more than I thought...

I did receive a couple of cross stitch kits in the post this afternoon. They are the first two wives in the Henry VIII collection and I'm already nervous because my general sewing leaves a lot to be desired and it seems I need to learn how to do special stitches first! I have one thing in common with Paddington-for tasks like this, I'm all paws!

FRIDAY
I'm totally knackered! Today was a day of washing the drawer full of tea towels to give them an airing , and washing a batch of the new ones I recently got in so I can de-fluff them before use. I did all the red ones today as I need to keep the colours seperated. Tomorrow I'll do two loads, one for the blue and one for the green. *groans*. Next I had to iron the load from yesterday and of course I pick a day when it's really warm and clammy! I was sweating like a pig! I also had a sink load of dishes to deal with which my dad was meant to do last night, taking the bin out for the collection tomorrow...and to cap it off I spent an hour making a seafood risotto (is that even how you spell it? I don't really care anyway!) It tasted nice but it wasn't worth all the work.

I couldn't find my recipe card for the meal so while I was hunting everywhere and moving everything, I knocked over the basket that has my Royal China thimble collection in it. SMASH! What a noise it made and I feared that I'd have a pile of broken thimbles. I got lucky in that one was a plain Windsor one that I'll be happy to just glue but one was my birth of Princess Charlotte thimble showing Kate on the hospital steps with her just after the birth. Sadly it was damaged badly and I can't get a replacement online. I'm a bit bummed but it could have been a total disaster so I guess I should be grateful.

Today I got my other four Queens and the kits all look pretty good. I'll be putting them away for a cold and rainy day this autumn or winter. I'm excited about all the stuff for entertainment that I have ready to go. Scrapbooks, cross stitch, jigsaw puzzles, 3D & 4D puzzles, painting by numbers kits, crossword books, sequin art, colouring books and pens...loaded for bear as they say! These are the fantastic looking painting by numbers kits that are due to arrive this weekend!

Chuckles Friday Reading Roundup

Welcome to my Friday Reading Roundup! This feature will show exactly what I've been reading and DNFing through the last week.

A much better week with lots of reading!

4 stars, 4 stars, 4 stars, 4 stars, 4 stars, 3.5 stars,4 stars, 4 stars, 4 stars.

Chuckles Weekend Roundup

Welcome to my feature Chuckles Weekend Roundup where I will be looking at what books I've received, anything interesting I've done or bought or watched and other random stuff. I'll be taking a look back at what happened in my blogging world too, sort of like The Sunday Post that some of you do!

Please note that I'll be visiting your STS/SP as normal, but I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow DISQUS to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I am the only one who does that on my social media! I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account. Sometimes, I have problems leaving messages on blogs hosted by Wordpress-they try to block me because I deleted my account with them but I will persevere as it only happens the odd time!
****************
Another week draws to a close and it's been busy on and off the computer for me, getting files removed or sorted, recording stuff then deleting it, catching up with everyone on my blog and yours, and of course the usual ton of stupid housework! Thankfully I'm cheered up by the arrival of a few long awaited books, a few entertainment related things for the winter and a few dvds on order.

I've ordered the BluRay versions of all the Jurassic films to add to my BluRay Game of Thrones collection. I do intend to get the Harry Potters at some point. I'm only grabbing the ones I'll watch the most and maybe fill a shelf with them. Maybe The Mummy, Jaws, Deep Blue Sea and the first two Alien films in the future...I'm also waiting on the dvd of SAS Who Dares Wins. I see Twitter was going nuts over the news that Ollie has been fired from the show before season 6 because he's white, according to Channel Four. NOBODY should be fired or replaced in a job they excel at because of their skin colour. I'm not happy to lose Ollie because I loved the banter and teamwork between the men and it won't be the same now.

Book wise it has been a decent seven days of reading. I've now finished the fifteen Paddington adventures and started on that hardback book with six stories for younger children. I loved it! The full colour illustrations were great and Paddington's adventures are always fun! I have the rest of that set for young kids arriving this weekend and I look forward to reading them all this week. I want to read lots this week! Over the last month I did buy quite a few books in series I follow or by authors I like...so my shelves will be taking a bit of a hit again!

Tackling The TBR

Films & TV & Music
This week I watched season 10 of The Great British Bakeoff, which I hadn't seen yet. That gets me caught up for the new series about to start. I looked also at season one of an old spin off from this for professionals-Bake Off Creme de la Creme. It's ok but nothing great. I watched Jurassic Park and a few Harry Potters as well.

The Week Ahead
I finished The Paddington Treasury today so I'll be getting started on another Enid Blyton, book four in the Secret series. I've enjoyed the first three and hope to enjoy this one and maybe read the last one too. I want to fit in some short horror novellas, some short Paddington kids adventures and maybe a bit of non fiction to mix things up!

Tackling The TBR

In December 2018 I launched Tackling The TBR, a challenge to reduce the ever extending TBR pile and 2019 was pretty successful in that regard. In 2020 I intended to make a big effort to reduce my TBR by buying less, getting stuff read and getting rid of the things that I just don't want to read from my bookshelves and my ereaders Maurice and Myrnin! However the darn Coronavirus Pandemic has put the skids under all my plans and I had to suspend the challenge. I've now decided to bring it back in a bid to kickstart my TBR reduction as nothing else has been working.

The TBR total shown is the total number of books I own but have not read yet-wishlist books are NOT in my TBR! Sometimes there will be a difference between the books read and new total-sometimes I read a book not on the TBR so it counts for books read for the week but

BOOKS IN
-Books in refers to bought, downloaded or gifted books being added to the TBR list.

BOOKS OUT
-Books read refers to books read that were ON the TBR and DNFed is obvious.
-Deleted from the TBR are books I lost interest in reading, or sequels to DNFed books I no longer want to read and have been removed without starting to read them. These three categories added together are my books 'out'.

I'm posting my progress on the 7th, 14th, 21st and final day of the month as before, even if there is no progress to report and anyone else is welcome to join in. No rules, set up your posts how you want and when you want, just reduce the pile! And each week I'll add my new week to the end of the post so I can track how the whole month went.

August 1st-7th
TBR Start Total: 1493

BOOKS IN:
New Books In: 4

BOOKS OUT:
Books Read: 7
Books DNF:
Others Deleted From TBR: 1

Target Total: 1450

New Total: 1489

A decent week overall to start the month. Buying a few books did a bit of damage this month but the total is still going down which is the main thing. 1450 here I come!

Top Ten Tuesday-Red Titles

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  http://www.thatartsyreadergirl.com/top-ten-tuesday/

NB: I don't follow or leave comments on blogs run by Google Plus, or DISQUS as I refuse to join something just to leave comments, and I won't allow them to follow new people, update my profile or post tweets 'on my behalf'. I won't comment on any blog that makes me sign in using another account.

This week it is books with colours in the title. I'm doing ten red titles. I have read and liked each of these books! I've provided links to the Goodreads review page.

1) Jamie Hutchison-Red Swarm
Swarms of eel hybrid monsters are coming ashore to feast on people around the world. It's up to the scientists and the British Navy to find a way to stop them! Exciting creature feature sea adventure!

2) Philippa Gregory-The Red Queen
I read this a few years back and didn't write a great review so I want to do a series re-read now that it has been completed.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9161907-the-red-queen

3) Jamie McGuire-Red Hill
A woman escapes the zombie apocalypse and heads for a safe location nearby and faces an anxious wait to see if her family and other survivors make it there. Emotional and tense zombie apocalypse read.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18114980-red-hill

4) Jaye Wells-Red Headed Stepchild
Funny and action packed UF about a half vampire half mage assassin and her friends who try to stop an evil creature from starting a supernatural war. Brilliant shopping addicted demon who is turned into a hairless cat!
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6397189-red-headed-stepchild

5) Jackson Pierce-Sisters Red
Fairy tale retelling of a young woman obsessed with hunting down werewolves and the strain it puts on her family. I'm not much for this kind of thing but I enjoyed it at the time.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7539030-sisters-red

6) AJ Church-Red Awakening
I reviewed the first two books in this series for an author back in 2013. It's an UF dystopian book full of magic, hobgoblins and a battle against evil. They both seem like stand alone books in the same universe and I liked book two the best. Details are hazy now!

7) Marie Hall-Crimson Night (aka RS Black)
A half demon called Lust working in a freaky carnival kills evil creatures for the greater good and finds herself knee deep in trouble. Heavy on the sex side of things but I really liked the characters and always mean to read book two.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18341467-crimson-night

8) Martha Wells-All Systems Red
A security android with an anxiety issue and addiction to entertainment space dramas has to protect a group of humans on an exploration. Murderbot is endearing, funny and relatable to anyone with social anxiety! Love this series!

9) Jeaniene Frost-First Drop Of Crimson
Companion/spin off to the Night Huntress series which fills in the gaps of the story of Denise and Spade. I thought this was the best of the companion novels that I've read and a good action UF in its own right.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6547187-first-drop-of-crimson

10) Erica Hayes-Cherry Kisses
Although this is book #4.5 in the series I read it as a standalone and really enjoyed the action plot and snarky MC. I never read the rest of the series as it was said to be an eroticc paranormal series which isn't for me!
