Book Review: Shark Beach by Chris Jameson

Rick and Corinne Scully and their kids have visited Florida's Captiva Island many times. This year, they've brought along their best friends, who can't wait to finally experience the place the Scullys call Paradise on Earth.

But this vacation is turning out to be a lot different than planned. The Scullys never expected the rowdy college spring-breakers renting the house next door, or a hurricane that would sweep through the Gulf Coast, or the century-old shipwreck that washed up on the shore. They never knew about the military research being done at a nearby marine institute--and the test subjects that escaped during the hurricane. In the aftermath of the storm, the Scullys and their friends will try to salvage what's left of their time at the beach. They believe it's safe to go back in the water. . .but they're dead wrong.

My Review:
Rick and Corinne invite their friends Jenn and Matti on a shared family holiday with their kids, renting a beach villa on a beautiful island. Next door, the villa is occupied by a group of college kids looking for a different kind of Spring Break. When the hurricane warning comes, it is a decision on whether to evacuate or hunker down until it passes, and the two groups end up being stranded through circumstances. At the nearby research clinic, a security guard comes up with the idea of releasing the test sharks so they can escape their tortured life but he has no idea what he could be about to unleash.

Rick and Corinne are going through a difficult time in their marriage which isn't helped when Corinne's bit of innocent flirting with Rashad, a college student in the other villa causes an enraged Rick to start getting into fights. With the hurricane coming in, the police have more important things to deal with, especially when the island tourists mostly ignore the voluntary evacuation order to stubbornly continue their vacation. It is only when the mandatory evacuation order is issued that people finally take notice. A boat accident at the bridge exit then stops the majority from leaving and they have to stay and weather the storm. Jenn and Matti are uncomfortable to see the problems their friends are having, when their own marriage is a happy one.

At the Institute, security guard Maurice hates what is being done to the sharks, as he himself has a rescue dog. All non essential staff are being evacuated before Hurricane Juliet arrives but Maurice decides to stay and hatches a crazy plan to release the sharks. When the storm actually hits he quickly sees that his idea is dumb and dangerous but is it too late to stop it? Lennox is tired of his wife and their life together and decides he wants to start a new life in Seattle. To get some cash together he decides to use the cover of the storm to rob the rich houses that have already been evacuated. Local cop Agnes has her hands full of tourists that refused to evacuate and are now complaining that they are stuck on the island. She faces her own difficulties as the island floods and she is forced to seek shelter to save herself. Her colleagues are about to be given the news about the escape of the test sharks to spoil their day.

I enjoyed the first part of the book which sets the scene for the coming storm. It has that tension as we watch who is doing what and the storm gradually gets closer. You can feel the frustration of the police that the tourists stubbornly stay until the last possible minute and cause a bottleneck to get off the island. There is then the disaster at the bridge and the panic of the people being forced to stay. We get our MCs trying to get to the bridge, mixed up with the bad plans of Lennox and Maurice, which keeps the story moving along at pace along with the problems that the police are having to deal with.

The real fun comes of course when the sharks make heir escape from the Institute and enter the sea. Their aggression has been dialed up by the stupidity of Maurice and they are very hungry. Tourists that are trying to make the best of things in the aftermath of the storm are starting to return to the water. Rick, Matti, Kelsey and Jesse are going on a boat trip unaware that it belongs to Lennox who is making a final bit of money before he flees. Kevin and Tyler are taking a canoe trip in the mangroves while Emma, Rashad and Marianne explore a beached wreck that is about to be dragged back out to sea. Nadia and Simone decide to hire some equipment for an octane packed day of fun. Corinne and Jenn are going to be stuck on the beach as events unfold and everyone is going to have an encounter with the sharks in the hours to come.

I loved all the different stories that were going on as the sharks started to feed on the tourists. It ramped up the interest and tension that began with the storm and took it to a whole other level. There was so much of interest happening. I very much enjoyed the mangrove adventure that Kevin and Tyler had to endure. I spent my time with Rashad yelling at them for their stupidity as it became clear what kind of trouble they were getting into but it was fun to read their part of the story. I could imagine how helpless Corinne felt watching her child drift out to sea and realise that there were deadly sharks waiting to feed on Emma. The one character that annoyed me was Rick-his petty jealousy with Rashad, his poor relationships with his family and his desire to always do what he wanted-but it was a mild irritation that never spoiled the story.

I really enjoyed this book, in the same way that I did with Shark Island and I really hope there are more shark tales to come from the author!

Book Review: Jurassic Hell by Russ Watts

There are not many places left untouched by man. There are even fewer where dinosaurs roam…

A probe breaks up on its return to Earth, scattering valuable data over an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. A three man crew from private company Space54 investigate, but they fail to return. The local chief refuses further access to the remote island, protecting an ancestral home unseen by man until now. An undercover military unit led by Phoenix Lewbridge is sent to the island to find any survivors and bring them home. What she finds on the island tests her unit’s fighting capabilities to the extreme.

Jurassic Hell: The ultimate showdown begins between man and beast. There can only be one winner…

My Review:
Ricardo, Tobias and Jane are sent into the island jungle to retrieve a scientific probe despite the misgivings of the religious local tribe leader, and they vanish. Permission has not been given for a rescue mission but the local man who took the three missing people to the island agrees to smuggle in a military unit hired by Space54 to find the missing people and the data they were searching for. The rescue team have no idea that the island jungle is ruled by various deadly dinosaurs until they have arrived. Now time is running out to get safely back to the beach to be picked up and the team need to decide whether to continue with the rescue or just abandon them to try to save themselves.

The book begins with Ricardo, Tobias and Jane trying to track where the probe has landed quickly as the local chief has only allowed them to be there for two days. In the heat of the jungle, they struggle to stay on schedule and come suddenly into conflict with a huge dinosaur. We don't see the fate of all three of the team, as we then switch to the rescue team being assembled to go and find them. This is an illegal secret rescue without the permission or assistance of the local chief but local boat owner Freddy defies his chief to secretly land them on the island for a one day mission, declaring that he must leave for home when it gets dark. Now the team have to navigate the jungle and find the missing people, unaware of what they are going to find.

The team leader is Phoenix, who struggles to maintain control over the men in her unit, especially ambitious second in command Karl. I found it annoying how Phoenix just lets him bitch and undermine her at every opportunity and does nothing about it. For a supposed strong leader it makes her very weak. In fact Karl's rudeness almost makes Freddy change his mind about helping him on the mission and she really needed to take charge and shut him up. She spends most of the trip over to the island dreaming about sex with Freddy and is so distracted that her team take orders from Max and decide their path through the jungle, which she then gets pissed at them for. Well pay attention then woman and control your team! The other thing that bugged me was her obsession with her sisters-one minute she bleats that she wishes she had dull lives like them and was safe, then she is bragging about her exciting life and hating to be bored like her sisters. This goes on a lot through the book which was annoying.

My favourite character is Freddy, who reluctantly goes against his teachings to help with the rescue because he feels guilty for taking the first group there. Karl is a complete pain and I really can't stand him and the way he behaves towards Phoenix but he keeps getting away with it. That level of insubordination should never be tolerated in a military special forces team. It's only later in the book that Karl improves as the mission gets really deadly. However then it goes into how Phoenix and Karl no longer hate each other and secretly LURVE each other. Ugh. There are too many sexual steriotypes in here with the female disrespected by her male colleagues, the fact she has to think about sex and attraction non stop through a 12 hour mission where dinosaurs are killing the team, that men and women can't work together in the military without sex creeping in...it was a bit frustrating at times.

I did like the dinosaurs in the book and there was plenty of action to enjoy. The T Rex was totally terrifying and as relentless and deadly as you would expect it to be when hunting prey. I liked that it wasn't easy to just kill with weapons and that cunning and luck had to come into their plans. The other monsters are just as deadly and I enjoyed all the dinosaur attacks. The book does end on a cliffhanger but I have no idea if there is to be a follow up book or if it is just going to be left like that. If there is no sequel then it is a really disappointing way to end.

There are a few flaws in the book but I did still enjoy reading it. I did like the author's writing enough to read more of his work.

Book Review: Days Of Panic by Jack Hunt (EMP Survival #1)

When the power grid fails, what will you do to survive?

After an EMP obliterates the nation's electrical grid on New Year's Eve, it's not long before society unravels and panic ensues. As the lights go out and silence spreads over the city that never sleeps, four ordinary strangers; a bike messenger, a homeless person, a support rep, and an ex-convict must forge a connection in order to stay alive.

When they realize the danger is far greater than they expected, they must embark on a perilous journey out of the city. Days of Panic is book 1 of an EMP, post-apocalyptic survival thriller series. It's a powerful, action-packed story about the ones we leave behind and the risks we must take to survive.

My Review:
Four complete strangers find themselves arrested at Times Square on New Year's Eve at a big rally just as a huge EMP hits and throws the city into chaos. The group decide to stay together for safety and try to get out of the city to link up with the family of one of them in a nearby town, a woman and children already fearing for their safety as law and order breaks down and two local men take an unnatural interest in her property.

We start with an introduction to the four people we are going to be travelling with. Jesse works for bike courier companies but has just been fired for not delivering a package due to being viciously mugged. He is trying to find his way home through Times Square where there is a huge anti-war rally when he is arrested by mistake and thrown into a police van. Maggie, a call centre worker, is trying to evade her violent ex and has been dragged to the rally by the friend she was staying with, who abandoned her when the police started making arrests after the rally suddenly turned violent. She ends up in the police van with Jesse and the others. Her ex is still trying to find her in the city so having her new friends with her could be useful.

Damon has just been released from prison, taking the rap for his friend's drug running. He is angry that his friend can't even be bothered to come and get him and has been forced to start picking pockets in Times Square to get some money together. Of course he gets caught and arrested. His dubious friends live in the same area that Elliot's family are. Elliot is a homeless man gathering cans and bottles on the street, trying to live with the guilt of abandoning his family due to post traumatic stress from his military service. With the EMP hitting, and a plane crashing into the square, he decides that he cannot help everyone and must get to his family. He knows that the prepper bunker and supplies that he left to his family will keep them alive but knows he has to go and find them as soon as they can.

His wife Rayna and kids Lily and Evan have the supplies that they need to get through the initial crisis, protected by the family dog Kong. Rayna is becoming unnerved by the behaviour of two men in the neighbourhood who have been prowling around her property in the dark, and she reluctantly reports it to the local police but they are too busy trying to keep control of the area without working cars to move around. There is the added complication that a married cop Gary, a former friend of Elliot, has been taking an interest in Rayna that is upsetting his wife Jill, so Rayna is unsure whether to ask for his help or not in case he gets the wrong idea.

I'm a sucker for a good EMP adventure. I liked the characters of Elliot and Damon as they were sensible and capable, knowing how to look after themselves and adapting quickly to the danger of their situation. Maggie and Jesse were a bit whiny snowflake at times, questioning the decisions the others were making and just not getting what is going on around them. There were times where I liked them well enough and other times where I was frustrated and wanted to give them both a right shake. I can fully understand why Elliot and Damon seriously consider leaving the pair of them behind as they don't add anything to the group other than whining at regular intervals! I did like some of the adventures that they got involved in as they started to travel out of New York.

I was also very interested in everything that was happening to Rayna. She is trying to deal with being abandoned by her mentally damaged husband, trying to control her fears as she realises that it is an EMP and using the resources that Elliot prepared for her and dealing with Austin and Trent snooping around as she can only rely on herself and a few friends if trouble comes. I enjoyed her chapters, seeing how she deals with the stress and tension, trying to decide whether or not to retreat into the underground bunker. But it turns out that even that is not as safe as she hoped with two determined thieves chasing her. Her story was certainly full of tension though I was worrying a lot about the wonderful Kong! Dogs in apocalypse books always get my worry level up to critical!

I'm not quite sure how to rate this book. I liked it enough and it entertained me for the most part. I love Kong and his family and hope he makes it through the series ok (he safely survives this book anyway). I liked most of the characters and plot moved at a decent pace. I'm just not sure if I want to read on with the series and I honestly can't decide! I think I'll leave it for now and think about it again when the new reading year begins.

Chuckles Autumn Reading List

Welcome to my Autumn Reading List! I had great success with the Summer version so I hope that this list motivates me through towards the end of the year. The idea is to pick a big pile of books that I want to read as priority, scattered over various genres.  This time I'm focusing a lot on horror and SF as I have two big challenges for that coming up in October and November. I'm also trying to get a pile of series finished before the year ends, finishing up a few challenges and fitting in a few other genres for fun.

From September 1st to December 31st, I'll try to read as many of them as I can. I'm choosing 100 books for the three month reading period of autumn and for December to round off my reading year so I can start a new Winter Reading List in January! Anyone who wants to join in with this is welcome!
