I wanted him to follow. At this point I knew he wanted a victim for tonight. If it wouldn’t be me, it would be some poor woman. I couldn’t let that happen. Once in the elevator I pushed for my suite’s floor. My pulse skipped. I’d wait for him there.
As the doors opened I stepped out of the elevator and inhaled deeply. He’d be up in about a minute. The hall was empty. I allowed myself a quick peak into the following minutes to make sure no one would show up beside the two of us. Allison would take about 45 minutes to come up. I had enough time.
I stood there, facing the elevator doors, and began the invocations. I had quite a few options as far as spirits went, but I rarely used them. Tonight, I called for the soul nippers. They were tiny, vicious things that hungered for soul energy. The most efficient way to make a living creature disappear. The nippers materialized out of the floor, screeching and moaning.
Now all I needed was a target to mark. And he’d arrive right…now. The doors binged open. He walked out, grinning at me.
“I knew you were sweet on me, honey,” he crooned.
I smiled and mentally drew the target symbol on his chest. The nippers launched at him. He opened his mouth, wanting to scream, but one of the nippers slid down his throat and blocked his vocal chords. They shot through him, screeching with glee. Each time they went through, a bit of his soul was consumed. In a minute or so he fell to the floor, eyes wide and face contorted in pain. I didn’t feel much pity. He’d put his victims though a lot worse.
Autopsy would show he’d died of a stroke. I took the phone out of my purse and hit speed dial.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“I think someone’s having a seizure or something. Hotel…”

She believes stories are the best kind of magic there is. And life would be horrible without magic. All her life, the archetypal hero and his journey have enthralled Darby Karchut. A native of New Mexico, Darby grew up in a family that venerated books and she spent her childhood devouring one fantasy novel after another. Fascinated by mythologies from around the world, she attended the University of New Mexico, graduating with a degree in anthropology. After moving to Colorado, she then earned a Master’s in education and became a social studies teacher.
Drawing from her extensive knowledge of world cultures, she blends ancient myths with modern urban life to write stories that relate to young teens today.
Darby is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Pikes Peak Writers Guild. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with her husband, where she still teaches social studies at a local junior high school. I closed my eyes. I couldn’t look at him and say what I needed to say. I wanted to accept his help, I wanted so badly not to be alone but I was afraid. “I was told not to trust you. I need more time but he’ll come. He’ll eliminate you. That’s what he does.”
He leaned toward me, his tone stern. “You have to live the life you have been given. You did not cause nor deserve what has happened. Don’t force yourself to shut people out before you give them a chance. I’m stronger than you think.” His voice hovered over me. “You can trust me. I’ll never hurt you. And I’m not asking to be your friend. You have no choice in my involvement. Accept my help or not, I’m here to stay.”
My eyes were drawn to his. The pull toward him was overwhelming. I was losing my resolve.

He took my hand and rubbed it against his cheek. So soft, I thought. No stubble. Flashes of Luke’s rough skin against my cheek when he’d finally kissed me slithered through my thoughts. Connie Ann Michael was raised a city girl, but was converted to a country girl after college and now resides in a speck of a town in Central Washington State. She is married to her former boss as she worked at the local Pizza place and has two college age boys that provide endless material for her books. The Portal's Choice book tour

 

Journal, just in case . . .
I didn’t ask to meet ghosts. Shoot, I was fine without them in my life. Uncle Craig and Hannah were nasty to me, but at least I knew how to handle living pains in the butt. Now I have to figure out how to open and close a portal between the human and spirit worlds. And I have to find and return a bunch of angry ghosts through the gateway and lock them on their side. I don’t know why the portal chose me to do this, a fifteen-year-old kid with no ghost busting experience. But it did. And if I want a ghost-free night’s sleep anytime soon, I’d better figure out how to get the job done. Because I’ve about had it with murderous ghouls and their unpleasant agendas.  “Signed Tallis Challinor”

When Tallis Challinor has to move a second time after the death of her parents, she hopes it is for good. She and her brother are ready to settle into a stable home situation with their Aunt Gabbie and her husband, Noreis. But what should have been a happy reunion is plagued with problems when Noreis opens a portal between the spirit and human worlds located in the basement of their house in New Hampshire. 
Tallis is a practical kid. She doesn’t believe that ghosts exist. But she can’t deny what she sees with her own eyes and the two ghosts Tallis meets at Thanksgiving in the basement of her aunt’s house are definitely not figments of her imagination, although she wishes they were. Tallis is unwittingly drawn into the portal’s energy when one of the ghosts fixates on her and forces her to assist in the release of three particularly nasty spirits. As a final blow, the portal chooses Tallis as a temporary gatekeeper and she finds herself charged with the duty of returning the very ghouls she’s set free, plus a few of their buddies, back to the spirit realm.  
As Tallis learns the secrets of the portal and begins to understand her newly acquired power, she formulates a plan to return the ghosts. Along the way, she receives help from many new friends who fill in the details about the identity of the escaped spirits, providing a possible motive for the outrageous actions of the escaped ghosts. Tallis must learn to trust herself and others as she taps into her inner courage to get the job done and save her town from the angry restless dead set. 


I crouched down, holding the railing, straining to listen. And that’s when I saw them.
“No freaking way,” I gulped, heart racing, palms sweating, hands clutching the bannister so hard it hurt. “This cannot be real.”
But it was.
They had to be ghosts, pale, transparent, spooky, but surprisingly well dressed. No sheets for those two. One was a lady, wearing an old-fashioned dress, her hair curled and fastened on top of her head. The other was an old guy in a toga-like get-up, fastened around his middle with a cord. The old guy was talking to Noreis. All good thoughts about my uncle flew out of my head. Holy crap, what kind of place is this, and what kind of weirdo
has my aunt married?

KD Pryor started life in Missouri, where she read lots of books, even sneaking them into baseball games to the irritation of her father. Kelley graduated with a degree in International and Comparative Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After college and marriage to a great guy, she decided to pursue a law degree at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Her oldest son was born soon after law school, followed three years later by her daughter and a move to Kentucky. One more son, a move to Ohio and four years later, her family jumped on the opportunity to move to India. They lived in Bangalore, now Bengaluru, for four wonderfully chaotic years, traveling all over Asia, Australia and Europe.
