Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf. You might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. Go to Carole's blog and add your blog post link in to join in the fun! Hosted by Carole at https://carolesrandomlife.blogspot.co.uk/
This seems like a fun feature and I have been planning to take part since Carole launched this so at last, here we go! I have a TON of unread books to choose from in various genres and I'm looking forward to sharing some of them with everybody.
The city of Darien stands at the weary end of a golden age. Twelve families keep order with soldiers and artefacts, spies and memories, clinging to a peace that shifts and crumbles. The people of the city endure what they cannot change.
Here, amongst old feuds, a plot is hatched to kill a king. It will summon strangers to the city - Elias Post, a hunter, Tellius, an old swordsman banished from his home, Arthur, a boy who cannot speak, Daw Threefold, a chancer and gambler, Vic Deeds, who feels no guilt - and Nancy, a girl whose talent might be the undoing of them all.
Their arrival inside the walls as the sun sets will set off a series of explosive events. Before the sun returns, five destinies will have been made - and lost - in Darien.
Fantasy is the genre that I rarely read at all. I'm not greatly into all these epic fantasies with elves and things. However I love George RR Martin's Song of Ice & Fire and have been dipping my toe selectively in the genre, picking up books like this in charity shops to give them a try. I added this one to the TBR in August 2018 as I have a War of the Roses series by the same author. This one is shorter so I hope to get to it first!
Considering this is Con Iggulden, at least you know you'll be getting a good historical based fantasy :-)

It sounded different from what I usually read-sometimes it is nice to take the plunge with something different!
DeleteSounds interesting and it has a really good cover. Hope this one doesn't disappoint you.
ReplyDeleteTrying fantasy is always a risk for me but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
DeleteI don't read much fantasy either but I do like the sound of this one!
ReplyDeleteYeah I like these group ensemble type of plots and it sounds a bit different!
DeleteI hope you like it. I love the cover for it. I used to read a lot of horror and fantasy but not so much anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping this has a bit of both! I like the cover too!
Deletewow...what a cover! I would have picked this one up, too. :)
ReplyDeleteI saw this in a charity shop and it just kind of appealed to me as being a bit different. The cover was certainly part of it.
DeleteThis one does seem like something you would like. I hope you do! Killer cover. I would have grabbed it too.
ReplyDeleteI hope to make this a priority over the summer. I think I need to get working on a summer reading post!
DeleteI'm not great with fantasy either. I'm also trying to adapt to audiobooks and find that fantasy is the genre that works for me so it's a win win.

I struggle to sit still long enough to listen to audio cds! I do have a small collection that I really need to get to.
DeleteNothing like a good regicide. Sound pretty interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping I like it!
