Welcome to my Game of Thrones Gossip,
where us fanatics get the chance to discuss everything we love
about this amazing TV series. I
decided to do a whole series of these discussion posts that let us say
everything we want and enjoy every second of it! Please feel free to comment fully and without restriction!
I have to warn you that it is important that you have seen all six seasons before reading any of these posts because these posts and blogger comments will be exploding spoilers all over the place. If you haven't watched the series and plan to, be warned that it's a bad idea to be here right now! I take no responsibility if you read on and things are spoiled for you.
Now I'm looking at the main characters introduced in season three, what our season two characters were doing and looking at all the bests bits. Enjoy the season three posts!
"You know nothing Jon Snow."
Ygritte is a wildling spearwife, living all of her life north of The Wall and is one of Mance Rayder's most capable warriors. She is determined to live and die free, refusing to kneel to any leader not freely chosen by her people and follows Mance Rayder because she wants to. She believes that northern born people are all descended from the First Men and share a heritage and it was not the right of anyone to decide to build a wall and claim all the land as their own. She believes the Free Folk have as much right to live south of The Wall as the likes of Jon and will take what is theirs by force if necessary.
Ygritte is part of a scouting party spotted by Qhorin, and is the only survivor when the party are taken by surprise by the Night's Watch. Jon is about to kill her until he realises that she is a woman. She asks Qhorin to burn the bodies of her dead friends and he assumes she is trying to send a message to others in the area, but Jon knows what happens when bodies are not burned after death, having experienced it at Castle Black, but says nothing. Ygritte is taken prisoner by Jon when he cannot go through with the execution the other crows left him to do, which surprises her, and gives her the chance to plan.
She has fun by making Jon uncomfortable with her blunt talk and sexual advances, correctly assuming that he has never been with a woman. Ygritte explains her thoughts to Jon about the Free Folk being there before the Andals and how the land belongs to all those descended from the First Men and there should be no need to fight over it. As soon as Jon lets his guard down, she takes the chance to lead him into a wildling ambush and he is a prisoner alongside Qhorin. The Lord of Bones wishes to execute them but Ygritte argues that Mance may want to question Jon because he is the bastard son of Ned Stark, thus returning the favour in saving his life.
Ygritte is surprised when Qhorin calls Jon a traitor and starts fighting with him and she is even more shocked when Jon slays his Night's Watch brother. She is happy that she must have convinced Jon to be on their side and his hands are untied. She leads him into the main wildling camp and tells Mance that Jon killed Qhorin himself so he could join them. She ensures that she is never far from Jon and when the time is right, she entices him away from prying eyes into a cavern where she seduces him and then says she wishes the two of them could just stay there forever.
"If we die, we'll die but first we'll live."
They continue with the mission to climb the Wall as instructed by Mance and Ygritte tells Jon she is well aware that he has not abandoned the Night's Watch as others believe, but as her man he must be committed to her first and never betray her. During the climb a crack appears in The Wall, and Orell cuts the rope to save Tormund but kill Jon and Ygritte. It is Jon that is able to save her and they safely reach the top together. Orell tells her that he would be a good husband to her instead of Jon but Ygritte loves Jon too much to care and talks to Jon about Mance and The Night's Watch not caring whether they lived or died but that they belonged to each other and would live or die together.
When they encounter an elderly man at his home, Ygritte tries to shoot him but Jon deflects her aim so when they catch up with him at the windmill, Orell suggests that Jon should execute him to prove his loyalty. Seeing that Jon can't do it, Ygritte gives the man a quick death and Tormund stops her siding with Jon as he fights Tormund's men. She is devastated to watch Jon then ride away from her to alert Castle Black. She catches up with him and he is glad to see her but admits that he has to leave her. Distraught with betrayal and loss, she fires three arrows into him but lets him get away alive.

I liked her. She was funny and tough. All the good ones die. *Sob*
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I loved that scene when Jon was explaining why women faint and are scared of spiders! She was so funny! So sad when she dies!
DeleteI really liked her character but I couldn't see things working out between her and Jon. She's definitely a tough warrior and we could all only hope to be as strong and loyal as she is.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Jon was always going to be about duty and honour like Ned and while Ygritte would fight alongside him, I can't see her being his lady in a castle.
DeleteI actually go back and forth between liking and not liking Ygritte. I mean, how can you shoot Jon Snow. (Of course I guess she is also engaged to him so maybe she feels like shooting him at times).
ReplyDeleteI didn't like her first time I watched it but I do now. Did you hear about that April Fool prank he pulled with the severed head of Jon Snow in the fridge in their home? He scared the hell out of her, made her cry and she was mad at him!
